Chapter 685: Chapter 443 Snake Taste? _1
The sea lizard creatures should be dwelling on some archipelago, not appearing in this remote little place.
Though this small island and the sea lizards’ homeland are both in the same ocean and both in tropical zones, there’s such a distance between here and their home. With the sea lizards’ small size, their combat ability, their feeding habits, how could they safely arrive here?
Feng Yi furrowed his brow, feeling that things were not so simple.
He and Xin hurried to the rocky beach.
From a distance, they saw five reptiles with a dark gray underside, "pancaking" on the rocks.
The five sunbathing mini-Godzillas seemed extremely relaxed and at ease. They showed none of the restraint typical of strangers.
Xin was astonished.
"There was only one here just now!"
As they spoke, two more sea lizards of about the same size climbed up onto the rocks from the water.
"Seven!"
Xin was now thoroughly perplexed.
Having stayed on the island for so long, patrolling it every day, he was certain that he had never encountered sea lizards here before!
Feng Yi looked towards the rocky beach and after a moment said, "There should be nine; there are still two under the water nibbling on grass."
"There were no sea lizards here before!" Xin said with conviction.
"Indeed, there weren’t. They likely arrived only early this morning," Feng Yi said.
From the aura, these little ones hadn’t been here long.
"Now the question is, why have nine sea lizards suddenly appeared here?"
"Is the seaweed here tastier?" Xin guessed.
"No, what I mean is, why did they leave their home and trek all this way to mine? And they’re all in their prime, a mass migration for survival? Could this year’s minor climate fluctuations have caused the seaweed in their home waters to decrease again?"
Feng Yi pondered, his gaze fixed on the rocky beach.
Deceptive in appearance and suitable as a model for film and television, the sea lizards looked intimidating.
They moved with a domineering gait and a fierce aura.
Yet their body length was just a meter, greatly diminishing their deterrence factor!
This was even counting their long tails; if one considered only the head and torso, Feng Yi rightly called them diminutive.
Perhaps some sea lizards grew larger, but those few in front of him seemed average sized.
Though resembling the Godzilla of movies and with a formidable exterior and impressive presence, Darwin hadn’t rated them highly.
But these creatures were primarily herbivorous, possibly eating other things when under survival threat, mostly sticking to a diet of seaweed.
As cold-blooded animals, they needed sunlight to raise their body temperature, after which they would dive into the sea to forage.
The temperature here wasn’t low, or perhaps they were just too hungry. They hadn’t warmed up until noon, with some already foraging underwater.
A sea lizard basking on a rock squirted two jets of water in the direction of Feng Yi and Xin with its serious face.
This was not a provocation or scorn towards Feng Yi and Xin, but simply a way to expel excess salt.
After observing for a while, Xin said, "They don’t seem very afraid of people; we could get a little closer..."
As they spoke, the two of them stepped lightly towards them.
The sea lizard closest to them frantically moved its limbs and ran.
Xin stopped in his tracks, an embarrassed expression on his face: "...They are still a bit afraid of people."
Feng Yi was unconcerned about this; looking at these suddenly appearing crawlers, he said, "Something’s off. I don’t think they’re wild."
He had Jia go to the communication station to inform the relevant organizations of the situation here.
Following the island’s redevelopment, the communication station was established first, equipped with various wireless devices and maritime satellite phones. On such a secluded island, where land couldn’t be seen in any direction, communication was indeed inconvenient and costly.
However, costs truly were not an issue here.
With the identity code of an insured expert provided by Feng Yi, they could send directed communications to the nearest insurance bureau or ecological preservation organization with high efficiency.
By the time Feng Yi returned from the rocky beach, Jia had finished communicating with someone and held a freshly printed information document.
Jia said, "An investigator from the insurance bureau says they’re currently busy and it will take two days for them to come and inspect."
Feng Yi: "Two days? The bureau here is not very efficient, did you tell them there are nine sea lizards here?"
Jia: "I did, but they have nearly two hundred animals to deal with on their end."
Feng Yi: "All sea lizards?"
Jia handed the document he had just printed to Feng Yi: "Not just sea lizards. Lizards, snakes, turtles, as well as other animals. There are terrestrial ones, aquatic ones, live specimens, and animal products; all were discovered on a cargo ship by the insurance bureau and related organizations. This batch turned up nearly two hundred animals alive and products, but it’s estimated that a series of other cases are under investigation.
"Yesterday, before we came here, indeed a cargo ship passed by nearby; it was the one inspected. These sea lizards might have fallen from that cargo ship."
Feng Yi glanced at the information document in his hand and said, "Alright, no need to contact them any further. Set up surveillance on the rocky beach, and let’s try not to go there for the next couple of days. No need to worry about anything else."
Jia and Xin quickly set up three monitors on the rocky beach, clearly recording all the activities of the creatures for the next two days.
They had originally planned to stay here for a day or two and then head back, but now because of this situation, they continued to stay and wait.
Before the arrival of the investigator, Feng Yi observed the group of newcomers for two days.
These mysterious sea lizards, their origins unknown, had taken a particular liking to the rocky beach and were residing there quite comfortably. They showed no inclination to roam to other parts of the island.
