Chapter 634: Chapter 413 Evil Beast_2
In the bizarre atmosphere of the team, they still managed to complete the collection mission at their first destination. While descending the mountain, they discussed whether or not to travel by boat.
An adventurer, momentarily distracted, staggered to one side. Eja rushed over to grab him. Although he managed to pull the man back, Eja was less fortunate and fell off the cliff. Luckily, there was a river below, and the cliff wasn’t particularly high.
The bad news was, there were crocodiles in the river.
Eja knew that within this jungle-cutting river lurked those massive killers. The sound of his splash travelled through the water, and the lurking predators would soon home in, which meant he had to reach shore as quickly as possible!
But the cliff on one side was unclimbable, so he had to swim a bit further ahead.
As he was preparing to swim in that direction, he noticed ripples in the water and the crocodile swimming towards him.
Without a moment’s delay, Eja decisively changed direction, deciding to swim to the opposite bank instead.
Two crocodiles chased after him, but Eja swam swiftly and, fortunately, reached the opposite riverbank ahead of them, quickly putting distance between himself and the danger zone.
Eja heard the whistle blown by his companion, signaling they would soon come to find him. He whistled back.
The crocodiles still lingered in the river.
Eja was also puzzled.
He had travelled up and down this river many times by boat, but the crocodiles he encountered today seemed particularly irritable.
What could be affecting their mood?
In any case, with the situation being what it was, it still posed some risk for his companions to come over by boat right away. They would probably wait until the crocodiles calmed down or left the area before coming to find him.
It’s alright, he was the brave Eja!
Even surviving alone in the rainforest for a month posed no problem to him!
While waiting for his companions to find him, Eja, as a native, had far superior jungle survival skills compared to outsiders.
He avoided plants with backward-pointing spikes and poisonous creatures that could worsen his injuries,
sought out food, and used herbal medicine to disinfect and stop the bleeding from his wounds.
While searching for food and medicinal herbs, he also took small portions of them.
He chose a spot, inserted a stick into the ground, split the top of the stick into several forks, and then clipped a leaf wrapped with a bit of food and herbs between each fork, one item per fork. Finally, he folded a leaf into a shape that conveyed a certain message and clipped it at the very top of the stick.
This was their method of sending messages in the rainforest for thousands of years.
He wanted to tell his companions: I’m still alive, I’ve eaten, but I’m a little injured, nothing serious.
After leaving the message, Eja found a place to rest.
"I’m getting old. To think just racing with a crocodile would leave me feeling so drained. But no matter, I am the brave Eja!"
Half an hour later.
The brave Eja realized his wound had become infected.
And he had been bitten by a venomous creature.
He felt dizzy.
But he was okay—looking at the time, his companions would find him soon, and they had brought medicine. He would be fine after taking it.
The sky gradually darkened.
The ground became more dangerous, Eja wanted to climb a tree but had no strength.
His limbs felt weak.
So, Eja found a convenient spot to make a fire, made some preparations, and lit a bonfire with the fire-starting device he carried.
Their ancestors would make bonfires for roasting food during hunts in the jungle. When learning these skills, the elders also taught them how to safely use fire.
Watching the bonfire, Eja reminisced about the jungle skills the elders had taught them.
Rustle—
Rustle—
Footsteps seemed to be approaching.
Why say "seemed"?
Because it didn’t sound like just footsteps; something seemed to be dragging on the ground.
A person?
An animal?
Eja moved closer to the fire and drew the dagger he carried.
The footsteps drew nearer, and Eja shook his drowsy head, trying to concentrate on the approaching sounds.
He could tell now, it must be someone dragging something...
Rustle rustle—
The branches rustled as a figure stepped out from the low shrubs ahead.
In the dim firelight, the figure became gradually more distinct.
A... person?
A person wrapped in a giant python, and with four, five, six, seven venomous snakes.
The figure’s eyes glinted in the firelight, but they seemed to feel no warmth.
Eja’s gaze went blank.
The dagger fell to the ground, and his lips trembled:
"God, O God!!!"
Feng Yi, in the middle of cosplay: "..."
Feng Yi had long known through scent that there was a human nearby, and that this person was not in good condition.
But there was no strong smell of blood. Not from any angle.
It was probably an indigenous person, who had also lit a fire.
So he decided to go take a look.
Originally, he could have left all the snakes on his body to one side before approaching, but he did not do so in the end.
Firstly, because if he left these snakes to one side, they might have all run away by the time he came back. When Feng Yi had caught them, he had resolved to release them back exactly where he had found them, not allowing them to roam freely!
Secondly, struck by a sudden idea, he wanted to see what reaction he would get from the indigenous person with his current appearance.
And that led to this scene before him.
What’s the deal with you indigenous people?
Why is your first thought about gods, ghosts, demons, and such?!
Before Feng Yi could speak up, Eja by the fire dropped to his knees, prostrating with utmost reverence!
Muttering words that Feng Yi couldn’t understand.
No helping it, the other guy was speaking too fast and with a thick accent; Feng Yi couldn’t keep up.
However, from the emotional information he perceived, it contained intense fear, awe, and some inexplicable excitement.
Oh, so he really thinks he’s seen some supernatural being?
Perfect. Feng Yi wanted to take this opportunity to clarify any misunderstandings.
To let the other person know he was a snake handler... a snake-catching expert certified by the Association for the Protection of Coexistence, who came to inspect Yulin!
"You..."
Just as Feng Yi began to speak, the other person keeled over.
Passed out.
Feng Yi fell silent.
He checked the person’s physical condition. All seemed well for the moment; indigenous people indeed had strong constitutions and could adapt better to the local climate.
But it was still best to get the indigenous man out of there as soon as possible.
From the scents, Feng Yi guessed this person should have companions.
First, Feng Yi positioned the man in a safer, flat lying pose, then he tapped the ground with his finger.
A deterring scent was released from his fingertips.
Feng Yi drew a circle on the ground, enclosing the man, so he wouldn’t end up as animal night soil while asleep.
A fire is not infallible, after all.
Afterward, Feng Yi returned all the snakes on his body to their original locations, then used scent information to look for the indigenous man’s companions to see where that group might be.
Yes, Feng Yi had detected the scents of at least three other people on this injured native.
Finding people was an easy task.
From the scents, he deduced that the man had come from the river; therefore, Feng Yu decided to start the search there.
It wasn’t long before Feng Yi discovered a small boat rowing across the river.
Initially, Feng Yi did not intend to show himself; these few people would probably quickly realize their missing companion was missing, especially with a fire burning.
If there was no need for assistance, he would leave quietly.
After watching for less than a minute, Feng Yi intervened.
What the heck is wrong with these crocodiles?
Why so aggressive?
On the boat, the mission team trio was tense.
They had been waiting for a chance to row over, but the crocodiles, like crazy, loitered on the water surface, with two even fighting each other.
They waited until night, spotting a fire in the jungle on the other side. They sent out whistle signals, but there was no response; perhaps the person on the other side was not in good shape. They had to get there fast.
The river calmed, and no crocodiles were in sight; that’s when they made their move. Barely had they set out, the crocodiles surrounded them.
An adventurer tried to drive them away by striking the water with an oar, but the crocodiles grew more aggressive, attempting to attack.
As they contemplated the peril of their journey, even considering retreating, the behavior of the surrounding crocodiles suddenly changed.
The other native aboard, more sensitive to his surroundings, noticed something odd about the crocodiles’ reactions—they weren’t attacking as viciously as before, as if something was driving them away.
He turned on his flashlight, directing the beam over the water, but only saw the shadows swimming beneath.
He was completely terrified.
The other adventurers shouted his name to snap him out of it.
But in his mind, the image of a shadow, huge like a serpent, kept flashing!
Even though he had only seen a very blurry figure for a brief moment, his mind had filled in all the details.
"Nabu! It’s Nabu!!!"
"The ultimate beast dispatched by the gods to guard the rainforest!"
Feng Yi, already ashore and covertly observing: ?
Ultimate what now?!
