Chapter 627: Chapter 410 - Gold Panning in X Town_2

"The rainforest is to be feared; you never know what you’ll encounter next."

After explaining why he ventured into the rainforest alone and expressing his sincere thanks, Sulayem didn’t just leave on a scientific basis. Instead, he hesitated, looked at the other people in the room, and finally, as if having made up his mind, he pulled out a pebble from his pocket.

It wasn’t big, just a very small one, slightly yellow, likely because the mud stains hadn’t been completely washed off, not the original color of the stone.

Many people wouldn’t pay much attention to such an insignificant little stone at first glance.

However, Cai Bing’s gaze sharpened at the sight of this pebble, and then he looked at Feng Yi.

Feng Yi’s expression showed no change.

Cai Bing opened his mouth as if to speak, then stopped himself. His duty now was to translate. Unless the financier expressed an opinion, he wouldn’t speak up.

Sulayem, seeing Feng Yi only looking back calmly, thought he didn’t recognize it and was just about to explain when he heard Feng Yi say:

"A diamond in the rough?"

This one was too small to be worth much, and most importantly, Feng Yi was not interested in it.

Seeing that Feng Yi recognized it but reacted so indifferently, shock appeared on Sulayem’s face.

The way Feng Yi acted both somewhat relieved Sulayem and made him worry that Feng Yi wasn’t interested and that he wouldn’t be able to sell the diamond.

After a slight hesitation, Sulayem made up his mind and handed the diamond directly to Feng Yi.

Feng Yi didn’t take it but asked, "Did you find this in the forest?"

"Not the forest, the other side." Sulayem pointed in a direction. "Found it in our farm, not far from that plantation."

"And its ownership?" asked Feng Yi again.

Sulayem laughed, "Our local rule is: finders keepers! People from other villages have found diamonds in their farmlands before, much larger than this one, and made a lot of money! I’m not as lucky as them, only found this small one. My grandfather said this won’t sell for much."

Given the different national conditions, Feng Yi didn’t ask further. He indeed didn’t have any interest in this matter.

"You want to sell it to me? Why not give it to your grandfather to help you sell it?" asked Feng Yi.

"I want a new large-screen smartphone, a tablet, and a solar charger!" Sulayem’s eyes sparkled as he mentioned these, "But my family won’t buy them for me. My grandfather said if I want them, I should earn them myself. My plan was to raise pigs for money, but luckily I found this diamond, which can help me achieve my goal sooner, if you buy it. My grandfather said this diamond is mine since I found it!"

"So, you trust me to sell it to me," said Feng Yi.

"You are my lifesaver!" Sulayem said with an innocent and candid smile, and reached out toward Feng Yi again.

Feng Yi hesitated, not wanting to take it.

Sulayem reached out further, "Just take a look, it’s a real diamond! Natural!"

He knew that the market was flooded with lab-grown diamonds, but also knew many people still preferred natural diamonds!

Cai Bing, sitting next to them, remained silent.

Even though this rough diamond was indeed small and would be smaller after cutting and polishing, it wouldn’t fetch much in the market.

But if it had decent clarity, it could be worth a few thousand dollars. Such an unexpected windfall, he wanted it too!

There, with Sulayem’s enthusiastic recommendation, Feng Yi, in the end, took the little stone.

Sulayem continued with enthusiasm, "This is the hardest gem in nature!"

Feng Yi pinched it with two fingers, somewhat absent-minded.

The words "the hardest gem" reached his ears, and unconsciously, he applied more pressure.

The hardest gem, huh, it shouldn’t be afraid of...

Crack!

Feng Yi looked down at his hand.

When he opened his fingers, a tiny piece fell off the already small stone and landed on the table.

Sulayem, who was enthusiastically talking across from him, seemed almost ready to crack himself.

The bubbling excitement of his speech abruptly stopped, his eyes fixed on the fragments in Feng Yi’s hand.

Fear, disappointment.

Then, the expression that appeared on his face was undisguised dejection, the huge emotional disparity hitting his brain, leaving it in a daze.

Sorrow swelled into a river.

A diamond!

Such a hard stone, how could it simply crumble with one pinch!

There was only one possibility—

It was fake!

He thought it was a diamond, but was it actually something else?!

If this one was fake, then...

His phone, his computer!

Gone!

Shattered like a burst bubble!

The tears were about to flow.

Feng Yi awkwardly said, "Uh... sorry, I crushed it."

The tears that had welled up in Sulayem’s eyes finally fell.

Feng Yi quickly said, "I’ll compensate you with a phone – after all, the diamond broke while in my hands. Yes, I should make compensation!"

Sulayem, thinking Feng Yi was being sarcastic, said, "I was mistaken; I thought it was a diamond."

Feng Yi replied, "It is a diamond."

Sulayem: Huh?

Feng Yi looked serious, "A mineral crystal will cleave along certain crystallographic directions under external forces, and diamonds do crack easily when subjected to such forces. After all, they are hard, but not tough enough."

Sulayem asked incredulously, "Really?!"

Feng Yi nodded, "Yes!"

Hope was rekindled in Sulayem’s eyes.

Cai Bing, sitting off to the side, looked at Feng Yi strangely, then at the broken diamond on the table.

Diamonds are hard but lack toughness. That was certainly true. But could they really split that easily?! Without being dropped or knocked with something hard, just pinching them with fingers caused them to crack?

Are you conning a kid?

No matter what others thought, Sulayem started to believe Feng Yi’s words again, or rather, he preferred to believe this explanation from Feng Yi.
