Chapter 588: Chapter 383: Mysterious Background_1

After the period of abnormal climate, human exploitation of the ocean resources didn’t stop, pollution was inevitable, and so was the need for protection while using them.

Therefore, aside from some protection agencies, there were many charity events and educational campaigns.

Every year at his birthday banquet, Mr. Liang always had a charity segment, not only contributing personally but his company also jointly donated to a charity fund.

Beyond the Liang family, the donations from other guests weren’t disclosed, nor was there any requirement for others to donate, following the principle of voluntariness. However, most guests would still express their support in some way.

Of course, no matter how wealthy or generous they were, they wouldn’t surpass the Liang family; after all, it was their stage, and one must not overshadow the host.

Feng Yi inquired of Feng Chi about how much other guests typically donated in previous years, so he could go with the flow.

Mr. Liang was in a particularly good mood today and even went onstage to sing several songs.

Solo singing, singing with family, duets with friends, and even collaboration with some celebrities.

It was apparent that he truly enjoyed it.

"No wonder he almost went into the entertainment industry; Uncle Liang’s singing is nearly professional-grade," Feng Chi said. "If he had chosen that path back then, he would have achieved a lot."

In the midst of talking, Feng Chi thought of Feng Yi: "Brother, if you had pursued a career in the entertainment industry, you’d definitely be a top star by now! I often hear people in the industry regretting that you didn’t."

Feng Yi laughed when he heard this: "I once planned to be an actor, but later, life took me down an unimagined path."

Feng Chi didn’t think much of it and continued: "Yeah, no one expected you to become an expert at the Union Protect Bureau."

Feng Yi just chuckled softly, without elaboration.

There was a dance party to follow.

The original plan for Feng Chi’s parents was to use such a social dance to introduce him to other people his age from similarly well-off families.

But now, they temporarily had to put whatever concerns they had for Feng Chi aside.

Neither Feng Yi nor Feng Chi, the two brothers, got involved in the dance itself.

Feng Chi didn’t participate because he had been involved with too many such events and had lost interest.

As for Feng Yi, he felt that there were quite a few people trying to test him today, so it was better to stay away and enjoy some peace.

At the moment, they were discussing things related to the island variety show.

The island variety show, in which Feng Chi had invested, was already in preparation, but there were still some details that needed to be discussed with Feng Yi, the Island Master.

Feng Chi had to leave Yang City tomorrow and would be very busy afterwards.

As for Feng Yi, the case of the poaching ring was fully resolved, and the special task force of the Union Protect Bureau had already stood down from alert status, so he could travel far and wouldn’t have to stay in Yang City all the time.

Both were about to enter the next stage of busyness. Whether video or voice communication, there were still many inconveniences, so it was better to take this opportunity to talk in person.

When the dance was nearing its end and it was about time to disperse, their discussion was also wrapping up.

"We can take off now, people are leaving, shall we go first?" Feng Chi suggested.

"Sure," Feng Yi agreed. He had noticed that people had started to leave.

"Should we let the Liang family know?" Feng Yi asked.

"Just send Liang Shaoqi a message," Feng Chi said as he took out his phone and began typing.

Feng Yi sent a message to them as well.

After sending the message, Feng Chi said, "Liang Shaoqi has a lot on his plate today. He might be very busy and might not reply to the message right away."

Then he saw that as soon as Feng Yi sent his message, Liang Shaoqi replied immediately.

Feng Chi: "..."

He looked at the message he had just sent and the silent chat box on his own phone, and then at Feng Yi’s side.

"Holy crap! Why so enthusiastic? That kid must be plotting something big! Bro, you’ve got to be cautious!"

After warning Feng Yi, Feng Chi looked around and signaled for Feng Yi to follow: "There’s a less crowded path here, and no journalists are staking it out."

Feng Chi had planned to tell his parents and sneak out with Feng Yi through a back route.

But once the message was sent, he quickly got a reply from his parents telling him to wait, they had important matters to discuss!

With no choice, he could only direct Feng Yi to the parking lot first, watched Feng Yi’s car drive away, and then went back to wait for his parents.

Based on his experience, his parents would take at least half an hour to come out. Business socializing took time, as they would stop to chat with someone they bumped into and proceed slowly; one hour might not even be enough.

Feng Chi had originally found a corner that was not easily noticeable to sit and wait. He had just noticed someone taking photos—the venue had been strict about photography when there were many guests, but as the event was winding down, the restrictions were loosened. Most of the guests had left, and those who wanted to take photos were permitted. The decorations and design of the banquet would remain until the next morning, and the venue would be open all night for those who wanted to take pictures to their satisfaction.

Feng Chi didn’t want to appear in anyone’s photos.

He had barely settled in a corner when he realized he was being bothered by flying insects.

He changed places, still to find insects bothering him!

Fortunately, the third spot he found was peaceful.

Until now, he hadn’t encountered this kind of problem during the evening’s banquet; he had even wondered if the pest control efforts were more aggressive this year.

In the past, the extermination of insects was not made too intense at outdoor venues for safety and environmental reasons. The measures were sufficient to deter pests but not eliminate them entirely.

Now it seemed that it wasn’t a matter of increased efforts; perhaps it was just the location he had chosen earlier that had been too good?

While he was pondering this, his parents came over.

Feng Chi looked at the time; it had been less than five minutes since his parents had said they "will be right there"!

Feng Chi smiled as he went to meet them, about to ask why they were so quick this time, then he noticed that his parents were somewhat out of sorts—

The footsteps were a bit hurried, and their expressions somewhat unnatural, especially upon seeing Feng Chi, the couple’s emotional changes on their faces became slightly more pronounced.

Since there were other guests moving around nearby, the couple quickly regained their composure. But, despite their acting skills being on par with award-winning actors in the past, they couldn’t perfectly control their facial expressions and body language!

This really surprised Feng Chi!

He quickly approached and asked in a low voice, "What’s the big deal?"

Feng Chi’s parents looked at him.

Their expressions even twisted momentarily.

Feng Chi’s dad turned his face away, took a deep breath, then looked back and asked softly, "Where is Feng Yi?"

When saying the name "Feng Yi," his tone was noticeably unnatural.

But Feng Chi didn’t notice that.

"He’s already gone back, I would’ve left earlier too if I wasn’t waiting for you guys," Feng Chi said and then asked again, "What’s wrong with you guys?"

Then he noticed that his parents’ gazes were extremely complex.

It seemed like they wanted to read something from his face, then they were confused, a bit depressed, and also had a hint of pity and sympathy.

Feng Chi tentatively said, "Is it about me?"

His parents said nothing. It could be said they tacitly agreed.

Anxiousness bubbled in Feng Chi’s heart, "Can you at least tell me if it’s good news or bad news?"

His mom thought for a moment, "It’s not bad news, it should be considered good news."

Feng Chi’s face relaxed, he let out a long breath, "Scaring me with that reaction to good news! Alright, let’s talk about it when we get back."

His dad also nodded, "Indeed, something big has happened, and this isn’t the place to talk."

Feng Chi didn’t go to his own place and instead, followed his parents back to their family house, the three of them silent all the way.

Once they were back at their own home, with no outsiders around.

The atmosphere was a bit strange.

Just as Feng Chi was about to ask, his mom threw her bag aside, walked over, and grabbed his ear.

Feng Chi: "Ah—ouch ouch ouch! If you have something to say, say it calmly, don’t start with violence!"

While shrieking, he sought rescue from his dad, hoping his dad would diffuse the situation.

Then he saw his dad with a cool gaze, flipping the handle of a broom in his hand.

This doesn’t look good!

Feng Chi: "Wait! Let’s talk, don’t get violent!"

His mom gave him a glance and let go.

Pretending? She hadn’t even used much strength!

She was careful not to exert too much force while grabbing Feng Chi’s ear because of her manicured nails and the fear that the ornaments might harm it.

The redness of the ear was Chi rubbing it himself, and at first glance, it seemed like she had been really fierce!

"Alright, cut the act! Come over, I have some questions for you!" His mom swept her gaze over him, "Are you hiding something from us?"

Feng Chi averted his gaze: "What’s wrong with a grown-up having some personal little secrets?"

His mom: "Pfft, I have no interest in all those messy affairs of yours, I’m just asking you, do you have any important information that you haven’t told us about, something that affects our family?!"

His dad added, "Think carefully!"

Feng Chi thought hard and came up with nothing, so he carefully asked, "Can you give me a hint?"

His dad said, "You’re so close to Feng Yi now, didn’t he ever mention anything about his... mysterious background?"

Upon hearing this, Feng Chi’s eyebrows twitched, and after struggling for a while: "He did mention wanting to let me know about things like the sources of his funding."

With a shift in expression, Chi declared righteously, "But I said I didn’t want to know!"

The parents’ breath hitched, their eyes fixated on Feng Chi as if frozen, their voices trembling.

His mom: "Why not?"

Feng Chi: "Hey, you know I’m in the entertainment industry, it’s so complicated, and I like to have fun. What if someone got me drunk at a dinner party and prodded me for information? My brother has helped me a lot; I can’t betray him!"

Seeing the stupefied look in their eyes, Chi also realized something and asked, "Is this related to that background of his?"

His mom took a deep breath and said, "Today we attended Uncle Liang’s birthday banquet, and we learned some news."

Feng Chi listened attentively, not missing a word.

His mom: "Someone told me that Feng Yi is a shareholder of the Ancestral Factory."

Feng Chi: "..."

Feng Chi: "Burp!"

He looked from her to his dad and back again.

Both parents had very serious and earnest expressions, without a trace of jest.

Feng Chi: "Burp!"
