Chapter 553: Chapter 362 Take it easy, boss_1

The car gradually left Tuo Jia Town behind.

Jia had said all he wanted to say; they had discussed the itinerary beforehand anyway.

After a moment of thought, Jia wanted to suggest to Feng Yi that now, while they still had time, they could take a short rest.

Before he spoke, he saw through the rearview mirror that Feng Yi in the backseat had taken out a pouch of nutrient fluid and was sipping on it.

Jia returned to silence.

That’s fine.

Different species, different ways of dealing with things. He couldn’t apply his own experiences to others.

Two hours later, the car reached a fork in the road, turned, and proceeded along another path towards their destination.

The road they had turned onto was a bit narrower than the one from Tuo Jia Town to the other major city, and the network signal was worse.

Very few people traveled this road at night because if something were to happen, getting outside help was not guaranteed.

Starting here, they were on alert.

Jia’s expression grew serious as he paid attention to his surroundings.

Without streetlights, it was pitch black outside, except where the headlights illuminated the road ahead.

Time ticked away minute by minute.

The scenery outside the window shifted from desert to semi-desert.

The ground was covered with more sand and rocks, some hardy plants grew here.

But at night, you couldn’t see clearly, and it made no difference.

Feng Yi tossed an empty pouch of nutrient fluid into the trash bin behind him.

"There’s someone ahead," Feng Yi said.

Jia looked towards the road ahead but didn’t see any car lights or other conspicuous signs.

"Hiding so well at this time, it’s unlikely to be a friendly. Shall we proceed as planned?"

"Yes, watch the road. Open the car door."

"Just give them a bit of trouble, don’t engage in a prolonged fight. That’s not our duty. The security team will arrive soon," Jia said.

"Understood."

Feng Yi hesitated before opening the car door but still quickly opened a box and casually grabbed a mask to wear.

Jia: "Then I’ll slow down..."

He intended to decelerate to facilitate Feng Yi’s exit from the vehicle, but as he started to speak, the person behind him had already disappeared.

The opened car door closed again.

Wu: "He slid out."

This use of the word "slid" was subtle.

After saying this, Wu glanced at the floor and added, "Without shoes on."

Before Feng Yi left, he had removed his shoes and left them in the car.

Shoes couldn’t keep up with his movement; wearing them out would have ruined them straight away.

Jia couldn’t see anything from the rearview mirror. By now, Feng Yi might have run ahead of them.

Ahead of them, beyond the range lit by the headlights, nothing else was visible.

"Did I just see him grab a mask?" Jia asked.

"Yeah, don’t worry about him being recognized. Even if he got captured by electronic devices, just say the Ancestral Factory has dispatched a secret weapon for protection," Wu calmly stated.

"I didn’t mean that. I was asking, which mask did he grab?" Jia said.

Wu recalled for a moment and then opened the box to confirm.

"King Cobra."

"Oh, the Over-Mountain Gale!" Jia said and, catching Wu’s meaningful gaze in the rearview mirror, he quickly explained: "I mean, the mask he took, the King Cobra, its nickname is the Over-Mountain Gale. No other implications, don’t overinterpret it!"

Wu: "Whatever you say."

Jia: "..."

This was why he didn’t like going on missions with Wu!

Outside.

Because the region was so remote and traffic so sparse, this stretch of road had no surveillance.

Even if a vehicle drove this way, it was usually during the day, and very few came by at night.

Feng Yi flew across the Gobi, the sound of sand and stones being kicked up and settling back down layered densely on top of each other, creating an especially eerie sound in this empty area, like a strong wind sweeping through.

He didn’t need light; Feng Yi moved normally in the night.

Each living being or non-living thing had its own scent, and Feng Yi could discern his surroundings from the air.

He also caught some information from up ahead.

The closer he got, the more he gathered, including the emotions emanating from the others—a sense of friendliness or hostility.

Besides smell identification, there was thermal sensing.

It’s just that Feng Yi seldom used it.

He gave it a try, but something felt off!

He looked left and right, searching carefully.

Oh, it was myself.

Feng Yi switched from homeothermic to poikilothermic mode.

The evening breeze carried away the excess heat, and judging by temperature alone, he had blended into the surrounding environment.

Beyond that, he also broadcast a message to the small animals in the nearby desert—

[Uninvolved members, please withdraw.]

On his arms, scales began to cover his skin, and his finger bones specialized into claws.

At a certain stretch of road ahead.

A car sat silently at the roadside, its lights off.

In the middle of the road ahead of the vehicle was a barrier meant to block traffic.

To bypass it, one would have to leave the paved road and travel over the Gobi beside it.

But the ground off-road was uneven, and the brush was interspersed with rocks of various sizes, making it difficult and dangerous to drive over it.

The people who had set this up were leisurely waiting in the car beside it.

One was smoking. Not far from him by the roadside was a no-smoking sign.

He paid it no mind.

Another was playing a single-player game on his phone, boredom twisting his lips.

The recent days had been warmer; the daytime temperatures were high and dry, and the intense sunlight heated the surface rocks to scalding, so the small creatures only became active at night.

Listening quietly outside, one could always hear some rustling noises.

However, at this moment, those noises were moving further away.

The two men in the car hadn’t noticed and were just hoping to catch something tonight.

They had arrived not long ago. Before their arrival, a helicopter from the Joint Preservation Agency had flown over to inspect the road safety.
