Chapter 518: Chapter 344: Big Fish_1
Crouching the entire night, they only managed to capture one small meteor. They didn’t even get the chance to make use of any skills and had to exert a lot of efforts. When Feng Yi went downstairs for breakfast, he was listless and in low spirits.
Compared to him, Wen Zhiyu was quite excited.
Feng Yi hadn’t slept all night, but Wen Zhiyu had a sound sleep. He had been running around outside during the day and had enjoyed a rich meal in the evening. After lying in bed for a short while and not browsing on his phone for long, he fell asleep and didn’t wake up until daylight.
Of course, his excitement wasn’t just because of the good sleep.
"I captured a meteor on camera last night!"
Wen Zhiyu said excitedly to Feng Yi and Pan Weining.
The peak of the Perseids meteor shower had passed and even during the peak, this year’s frequency wasn’t high.
There were very few meteors visible now, but Wen Zhiyu hadn’t been very hopeful to start with, so capturing one was already quite satisfying for him.
"I aimed the camera up all night and really captured one! The first thing I did when I woke up this morning was to check the camera and make a wish!"
Pan Weining, eating his breakfast, didn’t even lift his head at these words, "Making a wish on a video taken with a camera?"
Wen Zhiyu didn’t mind at all: "It’s all about the ritual sense. It would be great if I could capture meteors every night. I’m not asking for much; just one a night so I can make a wish every day!"
Feng Yi asked, "Do you make the same wish every day?"
Wen Zhiyu laughed, "Of course not! I have too many wishes, there’s no way one meteor would be enough for all of them."
Pan Weining didn’t inquire further about Wen Zhiyu’s wishes, instead he noticed Feng Yi’s lack of energy and asked, "Didn’t sleep well last night?"
He was concerned that Feng Yu wasn’t acclimating well to the water and soil or was particular about his bed, as some people find it difficult to sleep in a different environment.
Feng Yi: "I had some matters to deal with."
Hearing this reason, Pan Weining didn’t ask further. As long as it wasn’t due to the living environment, it was fine.
Actually, when you think about it, someone like Feng Yi, who often embarks on missions and can stay in the wilderness for a month, wouldn’t be affected much by the living environment, as he could sleep in the wild easily.
For instance, during the recent paranormal event at Fan Mountain on the outskirts of the city, Feng Yi directly fell asleep on the mountain. Ordinary people would not have the courage to do so, and even if they did, they wouldn’t be able to tolerate the open-air conditions on the mountain.
"How about you sleep a bit after breakfast?" suggested Pan Weining.
After considering for a moment, Feng Yi asked, "Has that meteorite hunter Uncle Wei mentioned returned?"
"He’s back, came back last night. Uncle Du just sent me a message asking if we had any plans," Pan Weining replied.
Uncle Wei’s meteorite hunter friend, a bit older than Uncle Wei, surnamed Du, had experienced the most glorious period of Tuo Jia Town.
During a time of abnormal climate, Uncle Du’s hometown encountered a natural disaster, and he fled his home. Coincidentally, it was during the meteorite craze, and he came to Tuo Jia Town looking for opportunities, where he luckily made a small fortune and settled down.
Even after Tuo Jia Town’s popularity waned, Uncle Du didn’t relocate. However, he often traveled to other places for meteorite trades.
Unlike Uncle Wei’s short-term obsession, for Uncle Du, "meteorite hunter" had become his profession, and he made a living off it.
Knowing that he had returned, Feng Yi said, "Then let’s pay a visit to this meteorite hunter first. I have some questions I’d like to ask him."
Pan Weining nodded, "Okay."
Wen Zhiyu also said, "Then I’ll come with you guys!"
After breakfast, the three of them headed to Uncle Du’s home.
This time, Feng Yi didn’t let Jia drive. Yi had already brought his team over and was discussing the meteorite trade with Uncle Wei’s people. Feng Yi told Jia to follow up on this matter.
Since a few meteorites had already been consumed by Feng Yi, when both teams were recording and creating a detailed agreement, Jia needed to explain these details.
The three of them drove to Uncle Du’s home, which differed from Uncle Wei’s quieter living atmosphere, as Uncle Du’s entire family lived there.
After meeting Uncle Du’s family, he led the three of them to his working warehouse.
Because he frequently traveled, Uncle Du had a slightly darker complexion, deeper wrinkles on his face, but his posture was not hunched. He was energetic, giving the impression of a swordsman who had traveled the jianghu for many years.
Uncle Du was amiable when facing Feng Yi and his companions, but occasionally showed a sharp edge when discussing matters related to meteorites.
Knowing that Feng Yi was interested in meteorites, Uncle Du showed them his collection and patiently explained the origins of these meteorites as well as the stories behind their star hunting.
Uncle Du’s collection of meteorites was for the purpose of trading, not for collection like Uncle Wei. Therefore, there weren’t as many meteorites here as in Uncle Wei’s warehouse.
"If you see anything you like, make your selection quickly. In a few days, I’ll be transferring the remaining stones to two buyers who mainly make craft products and want to buy a batch of meteorites for processing."
Feng Yi nodded, noting that there weren’t many meteorites here and none were large. He guessed that the large ones must have been traded away long ago, but indeed, all were genuine.
"Let’s buy them all," Feng Yi said.
Uncle Du, who had been preparing to show them his homemade crafts, almost dropped what he was holding and quickly recovered his composure, with a sincere and enthusiastic smile, immediately inviting Feng Yi to the tea room to discuss and brewed some high-quality tea leaves he had pried from someone else.
The price, though not as heavily discounted as with Uncle Wei, was still much lower than the market rate. And seeing Feng Yi spending so freely, Uncle Du thought that for long-term considerations, he could afford to give some ground on price.
When it came to bulk trading, Feng Yi left it to Yi and his team. He only discussed several key issues with Uncle Du himself.
One party keen to buy, the other willing to sell; the trade was swiftly negotiated.
After discussing the meteorite trade, Uncle Du was in high spirits, aware that the young men were curious about hunting meteorites. Uncle Du said, "It really comes down to luck. Sometimes we search for days and don’t find a single real one. Meteorite hunting is exhausting, and some meteorites are not exposed on the surface. They require digging to be found. Detectors can only detect meteorites that have a high metal content and density. For other meteorites, they have no response, so they can only serve as auxiliary tools."
Wen Zhiyu had also tried hunting for meteorites before and knew how difficult it was. On hearing this, he couldn’t help but remark, "It would be great if a big fire meteor fell here, then we could follow its trajectory to find meteorites!"
Fire meteors are larger, and when they enter the atmosphere, they shine brighter and may even cause airbursts.
If the meteor Feng Yi saw last night was the small fry level, then a fire meteor would be the big fish.
Feng Yi also wanted to see a fire meteor, but it wasn’t something that could just be seen on a whim.
Listening to Wen Zhiyu’s words, Uncle Du smiled and said, "Even if you see a fire meteor, finding its landing spot is no easy task. Think about it: a meteor falls so fast, tens of kilometers per second, and a one-second difference can result in a significant change in position. Unless professional organizations provide data, it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack. It’s only plausible if it’s exceptionally large or lands in a populated area, but both scenarios aren’t good for residents."
Scratching his head, Wen Zhiyu sighed, "Ah, I don’t necessarily want to find one; I just want the experience."
Uncle Du said with a grin, "For that, you’ll have to hope for a fire meteor that just happens to pass over this region and falls somewhere nearby. If it’s too far, it won’t work, you never know how many provinces it might cross."
Feng Yi thought to himself: I’m looking forward to that too.
My skill isn’t perfected yet!
Glancing over the warehouse, Feng Yi spotted an open sack in the lecture area.
"Is that filled with fake meteorites?"
Following Feng Yi’s gaze, Wen Zhiyu quickly walked over, picked up two pieces, and examined them closely, surprised. "Uncle Du, are these all fakes? They look almost identical to real meteorites, even more convincing than the ones we saw on the desert plain at the edge of town!"
Uncle Du too looked somewhat surprised at Feng Yi; he had originally pegged Feng Yi as a "more money than sense" kind of guy, not expecting Feng Yi to be able to spot the fakes from such a distance without using any tools!
"Those are all fake meteorites. Some people tried to cheat me during trades, but I ended up deceiving them instead. Others, I helped to identify, and when the owners didn’t want them, I brought them back," Uncle Du explained.
Impressed, Wen Zhiyu exclaimed, "Meteorite forgery technology has gotten this advanced! The details are incredibly convincing, way better than any I’ve seen before!"
Uncle Du chuckled, "You mustn’t have come across a real expert. When it comes to forgery, without some genuine talent, the sophisticated counterfeiting gangs wouldn’t even play with them! Never underestimate people’s ability to produce counterfeits!"
Wen Zhiyu remarked, "So buying meteorites really requires an expert’s verification. The forgery business is fierce!"
After finishing the meteorite discussion, they left Uncle Du’s home, and Uncle Du accompanied them.
Uncle Wei had already informed Uncle Du that Feng Yi was interested in buying land here. Having lived in this town for over thirty years, Uncle Du wasn’t completely versed in every detail but was nevertheless quite familiar with it.
Uncle Du offered Feng Yi some advice and shared some insider knowledge about certain plots of land.
Having just completed a big deal with Feng Yi, Uncle Du was eager to provide information to give Feng Yi more options to consider.
Over the following week, Feng Yi and Yi’s professional team surveyed and analyzed Tuo Jia Town, eventually settling on a plot of land and buying it outright.
This place would become another important foothold for them in the future, and this remote small town was the perfect spot for Feng Yi to practice his meteorite skills.
With two meteorite deals wrapped up and the land purchased, Yi’s team didn’t need to stay any longer and wouldn’t start construction right away, as the design plans weren’t even ready yet.
Yi left with his team, and Wen Zhiyu and Pan Weining planned their return to the capital.
For several days in a row, the eagerly anticipated fire meteor that Feng Yi hoped for did not appear.
During these days, they saw several ordinary small meteors, but all of them quickly burned to ash in the atmosphere. These were "small fry" level, not particularly useful for Feng Yi to practice skills, at most useful for exercising aiming and positioning speed.
Fire meteors had equal chances of appearing anywhere on the planet. In terms of total occurrences, they weren’t very rare and might happen every day.
However, some regions might not witness one for hundreds of years.
At any rate, none were observed in this area.
"Don’t force it; it’ll happen eventually," Feng Yi reassured himself.
On the night before Feng Yi decided to leave with Pan Weining and the others, a "big fish" neared the atmosphere.
