Chapter 465: Chapter 319 "Crossing the Mountain Wind"_1
Feng Chi, full of anticipation for a big meal with his brother, became anxious upon seeing these messages, but he was also worried that it wouldn’t be convenient for Feng Yi to answer the phone, so he could only send a text: "What’s happened?"
Feng Yi: "Catching snakes [Image]"
Feng Yi did not send a picture of the king cobra they were dealing with since the incident was still under investigation, and some information could not be casually disclosed; therefore, in compliance with regulations, Feng Yi would not send a picture of the captured king cobra either.
However, sending a picture of himself was fine.
The photo Feng Yi sent to Feng Chi was taken just after he had caught a snake, with bits of grass and mud splatters on him, looking somewhat disheveled.
Feng Chi: "An emergency task?"
Feng Yi: "Yeah, it was an urgent notification, had to reroute on the way. Not sure if I can make it to the event."
With serious matters at hand, Feng Yi didn’t chat much with Feng Chi, simply keeping him informed about the situation so that Feng Chi would have an idea.
After sending the message and securing his phone, Feng Yi stood up and looked toward other directions, continuing his search for the next target.
The young investigator from the conservancy bureau hurried to follow him.
Due to the emergency, the ecological park was temporarily closed to the public.
It didn’t take long after the incident for rumors to start flying, with some saying that this time it was a case of someone releasing poisonous snakes here.
"Release" is a sensitive topic that easily sparks heated discussions. Incidents of deliberately releasing poisonous snakes had happened before. So, when word got out about several poisonous snakes in the park, people began speculating about a despicable act of "deliberate release of poisonous snakes."
Although the investigation confirmed that someone had indeed deliberately placed the snakes there, it was not the act of ’release’ that the public understood.
However, there were professionals responsible for guiding online discourse and managing public sentiment, so Feng Yi and his team didn’t need to worry about that; Feng Yi’s task was to catch the snakes as soon as possible!
Feng Yi, along with the conservancy bureau staff and firefighters, split into several groups to search different parts of the park.
Everyone knew that Feng Yi was skilled in searching for snakes, but they couldn’t rely entirely on him.
It wasn’t a lack of trust in Feng Yi’s abilities; rather, the park was too large, and there were still four king cobras unaccounted for, and some time had passed since the incident occurred, leaving it uncertain where the snakes had slithered off to.
The investigator followed behind Feng Yi, his gaze filled with concern.
When a king cobra hides in a pile of dead branches, leaves, or thick grass, they are hard to spot if they don’t move.
"Feng Yi, take a snake hook, or even a long stick will do, use a tool to probe the path," the investigator suggested.
Using a tool to push aside plants obstructing the view can startle hidden snakes, causing them to reveal themselves faster.
As Feng Yi moved through the dense grass, the investigator feared that a snake might suddenly appear under his feet and bite him.
Although the captured king cobra had been confirmed through examination to have undergone venom gland removal surgery, nobody could be sure if the remaining four had also undergone the surgery. Even if all the king cobras had undergone the procedure, what if one of the surgeries had not been performed correctly?
They couldn’t take the risk.
"No need."
Feng Yi refused.
For him, having a tool in hand would only be a hindrance.
Following the scent, Feng Yi could accurately locate the target, his senses giving him a clear understanding of the terrain on every inch of land.
If it were possible to take off his shoes, that would be even better, as he could run faster here!
His shoes were holding him back!
But with other people present, it wouldn’t be appropriate for him to act too out of the ordinary.
Even with his speed restricted by his shoes, Feng Yi was still much faster compared to the others, eventually breaking into a jog.
The young investigator couldn’t keep up!
It had rained earlier in this area, making the terrain difficult to navigate with the risk of tripping or slipping if not careful.
Watching Feng Yi’s figure moving ahead, the investigator pondered a question:
There was no path here, so why did it seem like there was one when watching Feng Yi run?
Only after actually traversing through could one realize there truly was no path!
But for some people, the presence or absence of a path didn’t affect their speed in catching snakes!
To become an investigator in the conservancy bureau, physical fitness wouldn’t be lacking, and the overall quality had to be much higher than that of ordinary people. Yet even so, as the investigator watched Feng Yi pull further and further away, a feeling of helplessness arose in him.
When he heard that Feng Yi was being dispatched from above, he inquired within the large group at the conservancy bureau, asking those who had worked with Feng Yi what their opinion of him was.
Then a senior from the patrol team told him, "Once you really work with Feng Yi, you’ll understand why he was exceptionally promoted."
Feng Yi’s merit wasn’t just in catching snakes.
This man could swiftly navigate terrains littered with stones amongst the mud and grass!
The investigator felt that Feng Yi’s nickname shouldn’t be "Brother Se," but "Mountain Gale" would be a better fit!
Feng Yi wasn’t aware of the nickname the young investigator had mentally bestowed upon him; at that moment, he had already found the second target.
The king cobra hiding in the grass tried to flee as Feng Yi approached. Once it moved, a firefighter close by spotted it.
"Over here! Right here!" the firefighter shouted.
However, before the firefighters arrived, Feng Yi took action, precisely capturing the head of the snake amidst the bushes and weeds that obscured the view.
The firefighters who had rushed over to catch the snake didn’t even have a chance to make a move and could only stand by to hold a bag for the snake.
The investigator finally made it, but all he could do was stand alongside, catching his breath because there was nothing for him to do.
Watching the firefighters take away the bag with the snake, Feng Yi said, "That’s the second one, three more to go!"
The recovering investigator posed another question that was on his mind, "I know you are sensitive to the smell of snakes, but could you be distracted? For instance, could the smell of the two snakes we’ve already captured affect your judgment going forward?"
"No," Feng Yi stated confidently.
"Why?"
"Each snake has a different smell."
"...You can differentiate all of them?" asked the investigator, his face a mix of shock and disbelief.
"Hmm," Feng Yi affirmed, but didn’t elaborate further.
The more one talked about such matters, the more likely errors were to arise.
Watching Feng Yi continue forward, the investigator shook his head and cast aside the doubts in his mind.
It was impossible to stay clean when participating in a search operation in such an area.
Everyone, including Feng Yi, was covered in mud on their pants, and their clothes were spotted with stains from grass and leaves.
While they were searching for the king cobra, the nearby residents even brought over some fruits.
Of course, those who came over to deliver fruits did so not only to express their thanks but some came to hear the latest news, and some came specifically to see Feng Yi.
Jing City, a certain hotel.
Feng Chi had already checked in, but at the moment, he wasn’t in his own room but had gone to a senior colleague’s room in the industry, which was larger, to attend a small gathering.
Everyone was having a casual chat there.
Feng Chi wasn’t very interested; his plan for this trip was just to tag along, and he had been looking forward to going around to various restaurants and snack shops with Feng Yi. Now, knowing that Feng Yi had been sent on an urgent mission, he was in a bad mood.
Someone came over and asked Feng Chi, "When is your brother arriving in Jing?"
Knowing full well who the other person was referring to, Feng Chi raised an eyebrow, "Which brother of mine?"
The person smirked enigmatically, took out their phone, and showed Feng Chi a new post from a social media account with two accompanying photos, "This one."
Feng Yi looked at the two pictures.
One was of someone holding a large king cobra.
The other showed Feng Yi sitting on the grass, soaked in mud, eating a slice of watermelon.
The photographer was a bit far away, and even though the camera zoomed in, the picture was still somewhat blurry. Despite this, it was still possible to make out the figure and the information revealed identified the person as Feng Yi!
Feng Chi didn’t need to look at the information provided by others; with just these two photos, he could recognize his brother.
The first photo, with such a big snake, indeed looked imposing!
But the second photo, looked at by itself and compared to the slick photos that had circulated on the internet before... It was like someone who was famished from moving bricks and eating heartily to refuel.
Feng Chi felt that his brother was working too hard!
He had mixed feelings but wasn’t in a position to contact him right then, so Feng Chi simply sent a few messages over.
At dinner time, when Feng Yi finally took a break, Feng Chi made a video call.
"Did you catch all the snakes?" Feng Chi asked.
"One left," Feng Yi replied.
"Where are you staying tonight? A hotel?"
"The Civil Defense Bureau dormitory," said Feng Yi.
"Wow, the Civil Defense Bureau even arranged a dormitory!" Feng Chi said, impressed, "Not just anyone can stay at the Civil Defense Bureau’s dormitory!"
A little while later, Feng Chi asked again, "So, you’re really not attending the event?"
"It depends on how things go here; there’s a high chance I won’t make it," Feng Yi answered.
With one king cobra left, he could finish up by working overtime tonight. But he would still need to stay and cooperate with the investigation.
Feng Chi: "I’m so sad you can’t make it!"
The next day.
Early in the morning, Feng Yi, having worked overtime the previous night to catch snakes, stayed in the Civil Defense Bureau dormitory to catch up on sleep.
Feng Chi sent a message: [Feeling down, I thought about it all night, we can’t let our previous efforts go to waste!]
[Since you can’t come, I’ll eat your share too [Photo]]
The photo was of a sumptuous breakfast.
