Chapter 432: Chapter 302: Differential Treatment_1
After checking into the hotel, Feng Shou and the others had one more day to rest and recuperate.
Feng Shou didn’t stay in the hotel all the time, but instead, with a backpack slung over his shoulders, he took buses or borrowed a shared bike to traverse the city’s various streets.
He enjoyed the different views of the city’s various corners, took photos and videos, and sent them to his grandmother overseas. Although it was not the city of their ancestral roots, it was still in the same country, and all of this would make the old lady feel close to home.
Feng Zheng was different, though. His family didn’t live overseas, and the cityscapes were nothing new to him. He preferred to meet more people in the hotel’s restaurants, clubs, or some of the public areas, to gather information from other clan members, and it was even better if he could pick up some interesting gossip.
The more information he gathered, the more excited he became.
Originally, Feng Zheng had come in place of his father to attend the ceremony and take the opportunity to enjoy a holiday, not expecting to find among the clan many impressive personalities, like the little girl he met who was accompanied by several bodyguards, clearly not to be messed with.
He heard from a clan member that the girl’s father had a background not to be casually mentioned and was a particularly important guest for the Feng Family of Yang City, enjoying VVIP treatment within the clan.
At the time they were waiting for the elevator, they saw the girl with her bodyguards coming out, apparently dissatisfied with her stay, and she left the hotel with her bodyguards to find another place to reside.
No wonder he hadn’t seen her since.
"Can’t compare, really!"
On the day of the sacrificial ceremony.
Feng Shou and Feng Zheng, along with the others, would take a bus directly there. The vehicles were arranged to go from the hotel straight to the ancestral hall.
"We’re essentially on a group tour, which is convenient enough since everything is arranged. We just need to show up," one of them said.
"We’re here to make up the numbers, just treat it as an all-expenses-paid trip."
"Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. Maybe we’ll even get to see some internet celebrities!"
Feng Zheng leaned in and whispered, "I met some other clan members in the hotel this morning, and someone told me Feng Yi would come!"
Feng Shou, who had been lazing about, casually enjoying the scenery outside the window, lit up at this news, "Really?!"
Feng Zheng replied, "That’s what they said, but I don’t know if it’s true. I’ve heard he was expelled from the family but is still within the large clan. An invitation was sent as a formality to special clan members."
If Feng Yi hadn’t been doing well, the Feng Family of Yang City would definitely have pretended he didn’t exist, but now that Feng Yi was famous, they couldn’t ignore him.
Feng Shou didn’t care what the relationship between Feng Yi and the Feng Family of Yang City was; he was thinking about what questions he would ask Feng Yi if he met him.
The bus left the city center, and the tall buildings gradually receded.
Looking at the mobile map, they had already arrived at the outskirts, with mountains and water, quite scenic.
Along the way, they also saw other families’ ancestral halls, big and small.
"This area has a strong culture of ancestral halls," remarked Feng Shou.
"That’s how it is around here. There used to be more, but some were destroyed or moved due to various reasons. Some buildings appear to have been repaired over the past decade," someone replied.
The bus stopped briefly at an intersection.
People were verifying identities upfront; after a while, the bus continued on its way.
Feng Shou looked at the people outside the window and commented, "They’ve got good security in place."
Feng Zheng wasn’t surprised, glancing only briefly before returning his gaze, "The Feng Family of Yang City is a big family locally, and besides, there are some distinguished individuals attending the ceremony – security has to be tight."
The bus arrived at the parking lot, and they got off, walking towards the ancestral hall.
The parking lot wasn’t far from there, and there were guides, so they continued walking towards a large open space with imposing ancient-style buildings up ahead.
The grand building in the center position was the Feng Clan’s Grand Ancestral Hall.
"This place is huge!" exclaimed Feng Shou.
"True to the Feng Family of Yang City, wealth and extravagance! It feels like an ancient residence for nobility."
"What are those animals on the roof?" Feng Shou pointed upward.
"Those are guardian creatures. Typically, these types of ancient buildings have such decorative designs to ward off disasters and evil spirits. If you visit some historical sites, you’ll see these on many buildings. The position, number, and orientation of the creatures all follow specific traditions. In places where emperors used to live and work, there would be even more such creatures on the rooftops!"
"What kinds of animals are they?" Feng Shou took out his phone, adjusted the camera zoom, and enlarged the screen but still couldn’t make them out clearly.
"It depends on what the owner desires. Some are mythical creatures, like dragons, phoenixes, Suan Ni, etc. Others might use animals that exist in reality, such as lions," said Feng Zheng.
"Are there any snakes?"
"Snakes? Dragons would be more likely, but I haven’t heard of snakes. But I’ve heard of a real snake crawling over someone’s roof – it was so thick!"
Clan members continued to arrive, with accents from different parts of the country and the world. In some of their conversations, several foreign words were interspersed within the rapid speech.
Some even brought translators.
However, regardless of whether they brought translators, assistants, or bodyguards, they couldn’t take them into the ancestral worship ceremony.
The Feng Family of Yang City had considered this and assigned tasks to family members well in advance. For some of the important guests, they would serve as translators and assistants.
Looking up at the name on the ancestral hall’s entrance, Feng Shou asked, "Feng Clan’s Grand Ancestral Hall, why is it called ’Grand Ancestral Hall’?"
