Chapter 401: Chapter 288: Nuwa is still in charge of this?_1

The venue was becoming more crowded.

Tourists lingered at various stalls and shops, some watching plays or Nuo dance performances, others experiencing the dragon boat.

Feng Yi had taken a look around and headed straight for the food area.

Owing to regional tastes and customary differences between the North and South, this cultural arts festival was quite well-prepared.

The area Feng Yi was now passing was home to several stalls selling egg pockets.

Boiled eggs were kept in a net bag, fashioned into a hanging ornament. Children wore them on their chests.

Some net bags were simple, others more complex, and there were also cartoon animal designs that children liked.

Many parents who came with their children would buy one.

After all, not everyone knew how to weave a net bag. Those who did would just buy colored ropes and weave their own, not coming to the egg pocket stalls to buy one.

Feng Yi looked to the side, where there was a sign with illustrations and explanations.

It said that thousands of years ago, an epidemic demon caused calamity among the young on earth. The people prayed to the goddess Nüwa for protection, and following her guidance, from that year onwards children would wear an egg pocket for safety.

Feng Yi stared at this in a daze, "Nüwa cares about this too?"

Was this not just a marketing gimmick made up by vendors to add value to their eggs and net bags?

The vendor next to the egg pocket stall heard Feng Yi mention Nüwa and casually replied, "Of course! Today, everyone who carries an egg pocket is a descendant of the goddess Nüwa! The epidemic demon wouldn’t dare touch Nüwa’s descendants; all evils retreat! They ward off diseases, avert disasters, and bring good luck all day long!"

Then looked at Feng Yi, "Want one?"

Feng Yi hesitated for two seconds and nodded, "Okay."

At this vendor’s stall, the egg pockets contained both chicken and duck eggs.

Feng Yi chose one with a salted duck egg.

A small net bag woven out of colorful strings held a clean salted duck egg inside.

After paying, Feng Yi picked up the egg pocket and wondered out loud, "Did Nüwa have salted duck eggs back in her time?"

The vendor gave back a smile that was awkward yet polite.

Inner thoughts of the vendor: This young man is quite handsome, don’t be a nitpicker at such a young age!

Feeling the vendor’s mood, Feng Yi didn’t say any more.

Not long after Feng Yi left with his egg pocket, two young people passed by the stall and the vendor greeted them enthusiastically.

The pair were somewhat inclined to make a purchase but hesitated, "We are not kids anymore, we don’t need this."

The vendor raised his voice, "Adults can have one, too! Who says only kids can buy? Just now, someone about your age bought an egg pocket!"

Seeing their disbelief, the vendor glanced around trying to spot Feng Yi in the crowd, hoping he had not gone far.

Sure enough, he saw Feng Yi.

The vendor was just about to point in that direction when he saw—

Feng Yi sitting on a wooden chair by the road, taking out the salted duck egg from his egg pocket, deftly peeling the shell, and biting off half of the egg.

The sight made the vendor’s lips tremble.

He wanted to remark on it but restrained himself due to the presence of children and tourists nearby.

People usually buy these eggs to avoid the plague demon, or at least for some ceremonial sense! But that guy bought the egg pocket just to eat!

Even if it’s for eating, let the egg pocket hang for a while, will you?

To eat it right after buying!

This totally disregards the symbolic meaning!

Uh, what do grown-ups know about myths and legends!

Boring!

A downer!

The vendor averted his gaze, and his deflated expression once again lifted into a commercial smile as he pointed elsewhere to the customers, "The guy from just now is not around. But look over there, a girl also bought one, and next to her, a parent with a child is holding one too!"

The two young people at the stall were tempted, "Let’s get one, eh, even at twenty we can still be babies!"

Meanwhile, Feng Yi, sitting on the rest bench, gobbled up the rest of the salted duck egg from the newly purchased egg pocket.

He hadn’t intended to eat it so soon, but as he carried it, it became irresistible, constantly catching his eye.

Walking all the way here, this area was where the salted duck egg smelled the best!

Besides, he was getting a bit hungry.

One bite and the yolk oozed out its oily juice, the grainy texture was deliciously savory, and the saltiness of the egg white was just right.

If only there were a bowl of warm, mild rice porridge to go with it.

Feng Yi took a photo of that stall and sent a message to Jia:

[The salted duck eggs from this stall are the tastiest; you should try them. Also, buy more to take home.]

After buying a cup of herbal tea and two boxes of cakes, he moved on to the area selling sticky rice dumplings, picking a few from each stall.

Sweet dumplings, salty dumplings, plain white dumplings... Different wrappings, different fillings, catering to tastes from the North and South.

Feng Yi found a quiet spot to eat them all, then put his mask back on.

The salted egg yolk in the salty dumpling wasn’t as good as the salted duck egg he’d just eaten.

As he was pondering this, Feng Yi received a reply from Jia:

[The stall doesn’t sell the salted duck eggs separately, so I bought the egg pockets, got 20 of them [image]]

[The vendor said there’s a limit, a person can only buy 20 at most.]

[I asked the vendor for contact information, so we can order from him after the festival, if needed.]

[I took the salted duck eggs out of the net bags and went to a specific stall selling salted duck eggs to buy 20 more. I noticed a donation point on the edge of the event area and donated those 20 egg pockets, they said they would be sent to a children’s welfare home.]

Because of his job, Jia was used to getting a feel for the layout of a place so that he knew where everything was, which is how he knew about the donation point there.

After reading Jia’s messages, Feng Yi responded with a few stall numbers, which he thought had better tasting dumplings, instructing Jia to buy more, keep a few for himself, and donate the rest.
