Chapter 387: Chapter 281: Captain Wen Sent Me to Bring You a Benefit (Part 2)
With nothing else to do and the other party having some free time, Feng Yi chatted with the veteran station staff member with over twenty years of mountain guarding experience, adding some of the content to his task report.
The life inside mountain rescue stations like this one is quite frugal and very monotonous and dull for many people.
Most of the staff members are locals, whose homes are not too far from here. They have a deeper affection for this place and don’t find it too tough.
The staff members all knew about the patrol team from the Conservation Bureau going into the mountains to investigate the "mass bamboo flowering."
Having worked in the mountains for many years, the veteran staff members took a calmer attitude towards this. They’d seen a lot and heard even more from their ancestors.
"Actually, based on our experience, this mass flowering of the bamboo shouldn’t be considered too serious. There might be a reason like drought, but it’s not as terrifying as during a period of abnormal climate," the staff member told Feng Yi, "My child heard about the extensive flowering of bamboo forests in the mountains and asked me, worriedly, if the giant pandas would starve to death, even saying they wanted to donate."
Feng Yi gave a kind smile when he heard this, nodded in response, and listened as the staff member continued to speak.
Staff Member: "They can eat more than one kind of bamboo. With the current extent of flowering, it won’t lead to all of them starving. Territory disputes are bound to occur, and the losers might go hungry."
He then told Feng Yi about past occurrences.
"When I was a child, there was also a mass flowering of bamboo in the mountains. Back then, with limited resources and insufficient research, everyone thought they would all starve to death. There was even a public donation campaign, and a charity song."
The staff member hummed as he recounted the story.
As Feng Yi listened to the staff members narrate mountain tales, Station Chief Yao was inside, on the phone with the south monitoring station.
After discussing official matters, Captain Wen, who was still at the south monitoring station, took over the phone and inquired about Feng Yi’s condition.
Station Chief Yao: "I haven’t seen any wounds. He’s in high spirits, eating a lot, sleeping soundly, and his complexion is rosy. He’s even chatting with our staff, doesn’t seem ill at all."
Reflecting on last night’s events, Station Chief Yao continued:
"He looked particularly wretched when he arrived last night, unsteady on his feet, soaked to the skin from the rain, covered in mud and blood, and he even had a giant panda on his back. We were all shocked."
"That giant panda, we’ve identified it from the marks on its body and found its previous information from the breeding center. Sigh, it weighed two hundred pounds when it was released back into the wild. Now, it’s gotten so thin, only weighing a bit over one hundred pounds."
"Carrying the weight of one hundred and something pounds – and that’s just the net weight. When Feng Yi brought the panda here, it was raining, and its fur soaked up water, making it even heavier. That kid carried it for nearly 2 kilometers. He’s got some real stamina!"
The location where Feng Yi encountered the panda could still reveal some traces despite the rain. Once the rain stopped and daylight broke, he sent people to check. Familiar with the surrounding two-kilometer area, and with the information provided by Feng Yi, the people dispatched found the spot quickly.
It’s not that he didn’t trust Feng Yi; he sent people to investigate to gather more information about the injured panda, for collating and writing reports as well.
Outside the house, after Feng Yi had finished chatting with the staff, he checked the signal on his mobile phone. The network was not very good, but he had begun receiving messages intermittently.
He posted a safe arrival status in his friend circle and also updated his social media status, indicating that he was fine and nothing had happened.
Checking the messages in the chat app, he chose to reply to some.
Feng Chi’s variety show debut had officially been scheduled, and he sent Feng Yi a message reminding him to watch it when the time came.
If not for the poor signal on Feng Yi’s end, Feng Chi would have eagerly done a voice or video call, saying he wanted to see the injured panda.
Yeah right!
Feng Yi glanced at the time, pocketed his phone, and went back to his room to pack his things.
The clothes he’d changed out of the night before hadn’t dried after being washed, so he packed them in a bag to take with him. He continued wearing the rescue station’s clothes.
After packing, Feng Yi, with his backpack and bag in hand, took Station Chief Yao’s electric scooter towards the south monitoring station.
As he got closer to the south monitoring station, the signal on his phone no longer intermittently failed and strengthened to full bars.
Once he got there, Station Chief Yao went to take care of his tasks, while Feng Yi was called over to Captain Wen.
Feng Yi had already prepared the content for his mission report and, feeling confident, gave a concise account in front of Captain Wen, then showed him the videos he had taken.
However, Captain Wen didn’t immediately watch the videos because Feng Yi also mentioned that he had seen human remains in the mountains.
"From the bones, the person must’ve been quite young, probably a college student," Feng Yi pulled up the photos he had taken at the scene.
Captain Wen too became serious, "We definitely need to investigate thoroughly."
When it came to missing persons, databases from both the southern and northern sides of the mountain range needed to be used.
So many people go into the mountains and then vanish without a trace, unable to be found.
Telling Feng Yi to go rest in the dormitory, Captain Wen contacted the relevant personnel and sent them the photos and location information that Feng Yi had captured. A specialized team would handle such matters; Captain Wen wasn’t responsible for that.
After resolving the issue of the remains in the mountains, Captain Wen finally took a look at the mission-related videos that Feng Yi had passed to him.
Previously, he was more concerned with Feng Yi’s safety and hadn’t expected that Feng Yi would actually find the Emperor’s Gold Python!
Many who enter the mountains can only manage to find the Vegetable Viper, and if luck is bad, can’t even find that.
What Captain Wen watched was a video of the Emperor’s Gold Python that Feng Yi had roughly edited on his phone, bringing all related footage together into a compilation.
However, Captain Wen’s focus wasn’t on the Emperor’s Gold Python or, to put it better, it started with the python, but as he watched, his expression changed.
In the video, Feng Yi held a Vegetable Viper in one hand and an Emperor’s Gold Python in the other.
Captain Wen was staring at that Vegetable Viper.
Feng Yi was shooting a video, and there was a venomous snake so close!
And it hadn’t been caught yet!
Letting it crawl on his hand!
Was he courting death?!
If it actually bit him, he wouldn’t have made it out of the mountains alive! He’d become just another corpse!
Although Feng Yi had safely returned, the moment Captain Wen saw the situation in the video, he couldn’t help his heart racing with fear.
What was there to say?
Experts are just capricious?
Bullshit!
How many researchers of venomous snakes had to amputate their fingers after being bitten!
There were no small number of cases where poisoning couldn’t be treated in time!
How could this kid dare to do this!
Feng Yi wasn’t like this before!
Captain Wen had specifically looked up Feng Yi’s past information, knowing how he used to catch snakes.
When Feng Yi used to catch venomous snakes, he would grab the head without a word and take control, to prevent them from biting.
Why was he so reckless now?
Had he become arrogant?!
That just couldn’t be allowed!!!
Captain Wen took a deep breath.
It’s not good for young people to lose their sense of caution!
He had to clamp down on this behavior!
After a moment of reflection, Captain Wen called over a team member and said a few words.
The team member’s face showed shock, seemingly sympathetic, but seeing Captain Wen’s expression, he didn’t dare to continue trying to dissuade him.
Captain Wen waved his hand, "Alright, go do it!"
"Understood."
That team member silently mourned for Feng Yi.
Knowing that Feng Yi hadn’t rested yet, the team member came over with orders.
"Feng Yi, Captain Wen has sent me to bring you a ’benefit,’ high-definition uncensored version!"
Feng Yi: ???
Team member: "The highest level one, with a deep mental impact, pictures and videos of snake bites!"
Feng Yi: "..."
The team member handed over a tablet and pulled up a video:
"Usually, this kind of material has to be heavily censored before we release it to the public! It’s just that Captain Wen considers your trip to have been difficult, so he allowed me to dig up the uncensored version for you, and you must watch it carefully! Pay attention to every detail!"
The team member patted Feng Yi on the shoulder, his eyes sympathetic, "Captain Wen has your best interests at heart! After you watch it, you’ll be deeply moved! When we newbies first watched it, we were so moved for an entire week!"
We didn’t touch meat for a whole week because our souls were so shaken!
After saying that, the team member walked out the door and whispered to another person, "Keep an eye on him, make sure he spends more than an hour looking at the screen!"
He sighed inwardly after speaking.
The venom of a viper mainly spreads through the bloodstream. The venom of the more potent ones doesn’t just leave two holes from the fangs, it can cause the flesh around the wound to rot!
Just watching Feng Yi’s risky behavior in the video made him break out in cold sweat, afraid the snake in the video would turn around and bite the person filming!
No wonder Captain Wen was so angry.
Sigh!
I heard that the people from the Publicity Department at the bureau were planning to show the public the videos Feng Yi shot during his mission.
Those videos of Feng Yi with the viper and the beauty rat snake, if released to the public, would definitely need big, bold letters on the screen with a warning—
Dangerous behavior, do not imitate!
