Chapter 276: Chapter 205: My Poison Resistance is Also Strong_1

Upon encountering food, a seastar expels its stomach, envelops the food to digest it gradually, then spits out the remainders through its "mouth".

If you flip a seastar over, you’ll see its underside has just one "mouth," which it uses both to ingest food and to eject leftovers.

For humans, it belongs to the category of creatures that "eat from the same place they spit out."

Of course, not all seastars share the same diet; different species have different feeding habits, and their methods of ingesting food also differ.

The widely known "stomach spitting" type, or external digestion type, mostly preys on bivalves. They evert their cardiac stomachs, secrete digestive enzymes, consume the flesh and then discard the shells.

There are also seastars that digest internally, where the food is entirely swallowed without the process of egesting the stomach.

And there are cilia filter feeders, among others.

Perhaps there are even types that people have yet to discover.

However, when people talk about seastars, they usually refer to the external digestion type that expels its stomach, like those that recently infested the marine farms and feasted on clams.

Huskies cracking sunflower seeds come to mind; even without witnessing it directly, one can imagine the process—cracking the seeds open, eating the kernel, spitting out the husks.

But how do seastars eat clams?

Given the way seastars look, they hardly seem capable of cracking open the shells of bivalves.

Researchers hold several viewpoints:

First, they latch onto both shells and pull them apart;

Second, they prevent the clams from opening their shells to breathe, causing suffocation or starvation until the shells naturally part;

Third, they secrete a certain toxin that relaxes the adductor muscles, allowing for easy shell opening.

There is no absolute and definitive conclusion to this; the method a seastar uses to open shells might be one of the aforementioned, or it might employ several tactics.

For instance, when preying on shellfish with natural gaps, a seastar merely extends its stomach into the crevice for external digestion, bypassing the need to open the shells.

Fierce predators adopt different solutions depending on the situation; it’s a basic maneuver.

In human eyes, animals that seem weak have their own ferocious side within their ecosystem.

Feng Yi came out of the exhibition hall and checked his phone. Professor Ding and Professor Li had some unfinished business, so they told Feng Yi to take a stroll on his own for a while.

There was nothing inside that caught Feng Yi’s interest, so he went out to wander the streets instead. Tasting the local cuisine is a must when visiting a place.

In inconspicuous work attire, donning sunglasses and a hat, Feng Yi strolled down the streets with an assertive sway.

In this coastal region, plenty of people wore similar outfits. Although Mo city had been frequented by film crews and celebrities in variety shows lately—with sunglasses and masks being the standard disguise for many celebrities—none of them dressed in the style Feng Yi wore now, which was clearly not a costume but an actual uniform from some company or factory.

Feng Yi steered clear of the big-eater contests. Participating in those was too revealing; with so many people watching, everyone could see how much you ate. He had gained some popularity online, and being noticed would only make eating out less convenient.

His current approach was better; he wasn’t lacking money and there was no need to take advantage of the small stall owners.

Rubbing his belly, Feng Yi’s gaze passed over the restaurant signs on the street as seen through his sunglasses.

He hadn’t had his fill today. Jia’s packed meals were measured, slightly more than what an average person might have but not enough to draw attention.

If he wanted to eat his fill, he’d still need to look for food on the streets.

"Spicy seafood fried rice?"

Feng Yi glanced at the promotional board placed at the entrance of a shop ahead and paused, confused.

Oh, he had missed something. It was "Multiple-flavor seafood fried rice."

The word "multiple" had been blocked by a child holding a balloon in front of him.

There was a note beside the seafood fried rice mentioning "with starfish."

The eatery was quite large, bustling with customers, and there were even people waiting outside.

Feng Yi did a quick online search and found out that among the nearby restaurants, this one had the highest ratings. The signature "Multiple-flavor seafood fried rice" was also highly acclaimed.

But with so many people waiting, Feng Yi didn’t want to waste time here.

Just as he was about to leave, Feng Yi ran into two people. Noticing one of them giving him a hesitant glance, he raised his hand to greet them.

Pan Weining’s hesitant expression vanished as he smiled and said, "I thought you looked familiar, but I wasn’t sure, didn’t dare to assume. I can’t believe it really is you!"

Pan Weining and his brother Pan Youning had come to Mo city specifically to try the starfish after hearing about the outbreak.

Feng Yi wasn’t close with them and they didn’t interact much, but the two brothers greeted him with great enthusiasm.

After all, Feng Yi had done them a favor.

During the python hunt in Florida, Feng Yi’s swift sliding tackle to capture a crocodile had saved Pan Youning.

Pan Youning stepped forward briskly and grasped Feng Yi’s hand, shaking it vigorously:

"My benefactor!"

Feng Yi had intended to merely greet them before continuing his quest for food, but upon learning that he was also looking for a place to dine, they insisted on treating him.

"I’ve been wanting to treat you to a meal for a long time but never had the chance. It’s perfect that we’ve run into you here! This place has a good taste; a friend recommended it to me. We’ve already taken a number, and it will soon be our turn. Let’s go in together!"

Pan Weining was about to head inside when something occurred to him. He stopped in his tracks and looked at Feng Yi, "This place’s private rooms are all booked, so we can only sit in the main hall. You might be easily recognized. How about we go to the place next door? The taste is good there too, and the environment is even better."

Feng Yi stopped him, "Let’s just go with this place, it’s fine. Having some popularity online doesn’t mean people will recognize me in reality."

"Then let’s settle on this place! This place is famous for its well-prepared starfish! Brother Yi, have you ever tried starfish before?" Pan Youning’s usual reserved and formal demeanor was absent; he was genuinely enthusiastic.
