Chapter 231: Chapter 181 Antitoxin Serum_1
"Don’t pin your hopes on this kind of thing!" Luo Kai couldn’t help but say.
He didn’t believe in these things and had little thought about the ancestors of the Feng Family. He didn’t even know them.
After Feng Qian finished paying his respects, he stood up with a calm expression, "Of course I know! If this sort of thing really worked, then everyone would be seeking gods, worshiping Buddhas, and praying to their ancestors instead of fighting for a damn thing!"
"Then why are you..."
"Coming here to pay respect feels ceremonial and provides some psychological comfort."
Feng Qian took photos of the plaques with his phone, planning to look them up one by one when he got back to see if he could find any useful information.
He had basically never heard of the names on these plaques and could only identify his kin based on the characters written on them.
"The plaques of my great-grandparents’ generation are all here, but this place is so shabby, I’m reluctant to even mention it. It seems Old Man Feng really bore a grudge!" Feng Qian commented, then asked, "Did Feng Yi really come here to pay homage to the ancestors today?"
"Judging by the condition of the incense in the incense burner, he must have come straight here," Luo Kai pointed at the displaced incense burner.
"We’ll take a look around later, see if we can find any useful clues."
They spent quite a while inside, taking photos and analyzing, before finally coming out of the building to explore other rooms.
The ancestral home wasn’t large; everything was visible at a glance. The doors of several empty rooms were unlocked, a push of the door revealed their contents clearly.
They walked through each one and, apart from old age, found nothing particularly special.
"To be honest, I was really worried that suddenly I’d see a snake hanging from a beam. I heard that some old people used to like keeping a big, fat cauliflower snake at home," Feng Qian said.
The two left the Feng Family Ancestral Home, and Feng Yi had already departed. Aside from the old man engrossed in his phone, there was no one else around.
Feng Qian wanted to ask more about the ancestral temple, but the gaming-addicted elder paid him no attention whatsoever.
On the way down Xiao Feng Mountain, Feng Qian cursed in the car, clearly full of anger he had suppressed while at the ancestral home.
Luo Kai wasn’t in a good mood either, "I just got information that the land where the ancestral home stands isn’t in Old Man Feng’s control, it belongs to that old doorkeeper."
It was hard to imagine that the autocratic Old Man Feng hadn’t been able to snatch up his own ancestral temple!
"To be able to keep the Feng Family Ancestral Home in his hands, that old man definitely isn’t easy to deal with," Luo Kai noted.
Feng Qian thought so too, "We’ll investigate that old man when we get back, find out exactly who he is!"
He was frustrated having to be polite to that mute old man, but he wasn’t foolish.
"We also need to figure out exactly what kind of grudges or favors there were between Old Man Feng and our great-grandparents’ generation. Old Man Feng took power back in the day and inherited some property, but most of the vast family fortune today comes from Old Man Feng himself. It seems he truly didn’t gain much benefit from our great-grandparents.
"As for Feng Yi, Feng Yi inherited an apartment in Lu Hai from my great-aunt, that kid is too sly, I don’t even know how he got in contact with my great-aunt’s side. We hardly heard about her when we were young, only knew that she didn’t get along well with Old Man Feng and hadn’t been in contact for many years."
Luo Kai asked, "Exactly when did Old Man Feng’s attitude toward Feng Yi change?"
"You suspect Old Man Feng’s attitude was a pretense? No, Old Man Feng genuinely disliked Feng Yi, mainly his appearance. Think about the photo of my paternal grandmother, your maternal grandmother, she left behind."
Feng Qian and Feng Yi had different grandmothers. His grandmother had shown them an old picture before she died, a group photo that included the great-grandparents’ generation, a young Old Man Feng, and standing beside him, the great-aunt.
Luo Kai remembered that photograph, "Feng Yi’s face does resemble hers when she was young."
Feng Qian smacked his lips, "Feng Yi is definitely a blood grandchild, Old Man Feng would have done a paternity test to confirm it if he had doubts, otherwise, he wouldn’t have let him grow up."
In their kind of family, paternity tests were carried out early on; there was no room for those melodramatic issues.
"That generation holds secrets!" Luo Kai exclaimed.
"What do you think, how much does Feng Yi know about those old secrets? He knows about the ancestral temple, and he even has a good relationship with that mute old man there; he must know more secrets that we haven’t heard of!"
"Hard to guess. Feng Yi is now completely independent from the Feng Family; we can’t threaten him," Luo Kai mused.
"True," Feng Qian conceded, pounding the seat with frustration.
Looking out the window at the desolation, he thought of the ancestral temple on the mountain.
"This place is awful! If it weren’t for following Feng Yi, I’d suspect we’d come to the wrong place, not even a grand plaque in sight! Old Man Feng should really move the ancestral temple soon. Having our family’s ancestral temple in this wretched place is humiliating!"
Luo Kai remained silent. The matter of the ancestral temple had too many uncertainties.
Gazing out the car window at the receding mountain scenery, Feng Qian suddenly asked:
"Why are people afraid of snakes?"
"Maybe it’s an instinctual fear embedded in our genes," Luo Kai suggested.
"Then why aren’t some people afraid, like Feng Yi?"
"Perhaps, their genes are different from ours?"
"I wish I had the gene to not fear snakes!" Feng Qian said.
"It’s not necessarily genetic; it could be a skill acquired later in life, or a genuine fondness, like many herpetologists have. If you’re really interested, you could learn yourself; maybe understanding them would reduce your fear."
"Forget it," Feng Qian gave up.
Meanwhile, Feng Yi returned to his home from Xiao Feng Mountain.
Inside the Feng Family Ancestral Temple, among the people listed in the "Genealogy," none were included on the ancestral temple plaques.
The butler said he would take him to see his great-aunt during the Qingming festival.
