Chapter 145: Chapter 118 Certification in Hand_1
That was the old master who was treated like an emperor in the Feng Family!
And to think that he was actually disciplined by his aunt!
Feng Yi’s spirits lifted!
"Was he really disciplined from childhood?" Feng Yi asked.
"Not exactly; when he was younger, he was held down more often than he was hit. The old master liked people to comply with his wishes when he was a child. Otherwise, he would throw a tantrum. But he was indeed talented, and there weren’t many in the Feng Family at the time, so when such a good seedling appeared, the elders paid a lot of attention to him, and indeed, many tended to indulge him.
"It was only when the old master lost his temper over minor things and threw bowls or smashed cups that Madam Feng would hold him down to prevent the throwing, or let him throw other durable items instead. She also wouldn’t allow him to displace his anger and kick people. It’s said that back then, the old master was often reduced to tears from frustration. As long as Madam Feng was present, his outbursts just couldn’t be freely vented.
"Afterward, it seems that when he was about fourteen or fifteen years old, Madam Feng took a firm hand, and the old master experienced a harsh disciplining. There was a big conflict, and after reaching adulthood, they went their separate ways," the butler said.
Feng Yi thought of another question, "Who is older, the old master or his aunt?"
"They’re twins; the old master was born a step ahead."
Which means they were the same age.
It just hadn’t occurred to Feng Yi that these two were twins.
With different genders, they would be fraternal twins. Even the genetic material would differ.
"When did my great-aunt begin to evolve?" Feng Yi asked.
"It was also after reaching adulthood.
Feng Yi took off the zodiac medal he wore around his neck, "Does the old master know the secret of this?"
"He doesn’t. Perhaps he knows that the Feng Family has a special branch and that picking an heir is special too, but he doesn’t know the secret within."
The butler knew only so much and could provide limited information. Yet, to Feng Yi, even this limited content held vast information!
Having learned a bit about the old master’s past, Feng Yi didn’t continue to inquire—the memories of the old master weren’t all that pleasant.
"By the way, since we’re in Yang City, shouldn’t we visit Mute Uncle? Living alone on Xiao Feng Mountain, I wonder if he gets lonely," Feng Yi asked.
"There’s no need," the butler said, "he’s not lonely at all."
Still, Feng Yi sent Mute Uncle a message, then received—
[Absolutely no need! I’m quite busy!!!]
As for what he was busy with, Feng Yi figured he knew a bit.
Alright then.
Feng Yi sent another message back, saying since he was busy, he wouldn’t come to disturb him.
Not sure whether it was because of happiness that Feng Yi wasn’t visiting, Mute Uncle sent another message—
[Pat on the head] I’ll send you some mountain fruits!
Feng Yi: "..."
After dinner, Feng Yi went to check on the koi in the pond.
They seemed quite lively and in good condition. Chef Bing’s koi feed had also been produced, who mentioned the batch was small. He would observe the koi’s growth and decide whether to adjust the feed formula before making more. As the fish grew, the formula would be tweaked to cater to different growth stages.
Chef Bing was meticulous even when creating fish feed formulas.
That night, Feng Yi went to bed early. Perhaps because of the day’s many events and energy consumed—even after eating—tiredness set in earlier than usual.
Maybe due to the abundance of snake-related events during the day or augmenting his brain database in the Yang City branch of the United Protection Bureau’s sample room, Feng Yi dreamed of many snakes that night.
Previously his dreams featured a single snake chasing its tail in circles, but tonight, it was a group of snakes doing the same.
The next morning, Feng Yi sat quietly in bed for a while, calming his mind from the dream’s stimulation.
Just like usual, he could barely remember the dream upon waking—just vague images. With pen and paper in hand attempting to jot down something dream-related, all he managed to draw were open-ended circles.
Ding—
A new message alert.
Setting the pen and paper aside, Feng Yi brushed off the lingering thoughts of the dream to check the message.
The new message came from Manager Tao.
Manager Tao and his team, along with people from other departments, spent the entire night and confirmed the authenticity of over a thousand Snake Gallbladders.
Without going into detail about the results in the message, the emphasis was on when Feng Yi had time to go for the validation test, adding it wouldn’t take long, maybe less than an hour.
Although department regulations prevented him from disclosing the results openly, the tone indicated to Feng Yi that their findings matched his identification!
If the results matched, then certification would definitely be via the special talents examination channel.
Feng Yi replied to Manager Tao, saying he had time that morning.
Manager Tao promptly set a specific time. He would handle the rest.
After breakfast and a bit of tidying up, Feng Yi checked the koi again. All seemed well adapted, with no anomalies.
With necessary documents in hand, Feng Yi headed to the examination site provided by Manager Tao.
The appraisal exam wasn’t available at just any time; there were two fixed exam dates each year. However, for special talents like Feng Yi, the situation was different.
Moreover, after the appraisal he conducted yesterday, Feng Yi’s deeds had spread throughout the appraisal community. Those who spread his feats were either from government agencies or members of renowned research teams, which lent considerable credibility to the tales. This was different from the hype in the entertainment industry; without sufficient ability, it was difficult to gain their recognition. Thus, many people were now inquiring about Feng Yi.
This was exactly why Feng Yi was so diligent in appraising. Even without payment, having these people spread the word could save him a lot of trouble.
With his abilities on display, all that was missing was an appraisal qualification certificate.
Manager Tao, with dark circles under his eyes and no time for rest, was waiting at the examination venue.
"Won’t you take a break?" Feng Yi asked, noticing the undeniable fatigue on Manager Tao’s face.
Since the exam was already arranged, there was no need for Manager Tao to come in person.
"No rush, it won’t take long on your part. Come with me."
Manager Tao led Feng Yi to the testing site.
The preliminary test was simplified and not too complicated, completed directly on a microcomputer and only took about ten minutes.
The questions in the preliminary test were not difficult for Feng Yi, involving picture identification, descriptive identification, and related legal provisions. Picture identification was a matter of a glance. The pictures in the preliminary test were easy, and while the descriptive identification and other questions took slightly longer, they were still manageable. Feng Yi had prepared.
Submitting the test would produce the results.
Glancing at the "Excellent" marked at the end of his results, Manager Tao took Feng Yi to the retest site.
Three teachers were in charge of the retest, and they had all volunteered to come after hearing about Feng Yi’s accomplishments. Otherwise, without Manager Tao’s influence, it would not have been possible to gather them so quickly to organize the retest—they had plenty of work to do.
These three were well-known experts in the appraisal circle, true experts.
One focused on traditional appraisal methods, another on new technological appraisals, and the third, though an administrator, also had significant appraisal skills.
Each expert presented a question, involving the appraisal of snake slough, venom, and bones.
These were no challenge for Feng Yi, who showed some restraint, yet his speed of appraisal still amazed the three experts.
The questions they had set were unknown to one another before the test; not even Manager Tao knew of them, and the retest itself was hastily organized, precluding any possibility of fraud.
The entire exam, if one truly had the ability, could be completed in half an hour.
As Feng Yi’s abilities were genuine, he completed both the preliminary and retest in under half an hour, passing with flying colors.
The three experts, who wished to communicate more with Feng Yi, had little time to spare, as they had taken time out of their schedules for this temporary exam. They simply exchanged contact information before parting ways.
After taking a photograph and entering his information, Feng Yi finally received his brand-new appraisal qualification certificate.
The express channel was indeed quick.
"That’s it. Now, wherever you appraise, you’ll carry weight with this certificate. Charging money will be more justifiable. Most importantly, more public institutions, social groups, and even international organizations may seek to collaborate with you," Manager Tao patted Feng Yi’s shoulder, "You have limitless prospects."
Feng Yi expressed his sincere gratitude.
Manager Tao was inwardly deeply moved. Feng Yi had a talent that was like being spoon-fed by fate itself.
Others could only envy in vain.
His personal presence to guide Feng Yi through the exam was motivated by the recognition of such rare talent. In the future, it might not be that he would help Feng Yi, but rather that Feng Yi would help him.
Feng Yi alone could accomplish the appraisal tasks of an entire team!
However, the downside was also evident. Feng Yi’s appraisals lacked data support. Without data, he couldn’t write reports or publish papers, and in some cases, couldn’t provide enough evidence. Therefore, when necessary, they still needed laboratory technicians like themselves to gather data by using detection methods. This meant that there was no risk of losing their jobs.
But if the judgments were swift and accurate, they indeed saved a lot of time. This was something they couldn’t achieve.
The strengths and weaknesses were clear.
The categories for appraisal were clearly listed on Feng Yi’s qualification certificate.
"By the way, scan that code and download a phone application for species recognition." Manager Tao showed a QR code download image on his phone.
Feng Yi did as instructed.
"It’s an app developed by the Conservation Bureau, a professional version that only the bureau’s internal staff and select individuals are allowed to use. However, it can only make some basic, superficial identifications, and it can’t help with verifying the authenticity of samples or more in-depth information. It also lists the protection levels. If you encounter a species you don’t recognize, you can just open it and scan the animal to find out what it is. The accuracy is quite high. There’s also a specialized one for plants that you can download."
Manager Tao received a work call and had to rush to the lab for handling. He also needed a good rest afterward, so without further ado, he hurriedly left.
Feng Yi wasn’t in a rush to leave; he stood in the hall, watching previously aired news on the promo screen. An earlier-year news about the Conservation Bureau, in collaboration with multiple departments, cracking a python skin smuggling case, was playing.
A photo of the giant python popped up on the four-meter-wide screen, with text introducing the species, including its habitat and distribution.
Just looking at the photo was enough to feel the unsettling cold stare.
Feng Yi continued to gaze at the big screen, deep in thought.
The image on the screen shifted, transitioning from a still picture to a dynamic video showing the python’s life in the jungle, swimming, climbing, and slithering.
Feng Yi’s expression gradually became more solemn.
An essential question came to his mind.
If his legs turned into a snake tail, then when that time came...
Would he move in a straight line or an S-shape?
