Closer to Revealing My True Self -

Chapter 139: Chapter 115: No License _1
The freshly minted expert, Feng Yi, adapted to his new identity quickly—and he was confident about it!
He might not be certain when it came to identifying other things, but when it came to snakes or snake-related products, his confidence was solid!
With evolution, his abilities were only getting stronger. He had a talent for this domain from the beginning, and now it was even more effortless to identify them than before.
Therefore, even when standing at the daunting entrance of the Joint Protection Bureau, facing its members, Feng Yi felt no trace of intimidation.
There was nothing to be nervous about, after all, he didn’t come on his own, Captain Yuan had asked him over to help. If he could be of assistance, that was great; if not, it wouldn’t be his fault!
So, what was there to be nervous about?
Outside the Yang City branch of the Joint Protection Bureau, the young "expert" and a young investigator faced each other in silence.
Feng Yi thought that this person looked like a rookie runner who had just joined the team, still emanating a sense of naivety. During the incident with the little green dragon at Yue Mountain, Feng Yi had met Captain Yuan and the people around him. Compared to them, this person didn’t measure up. Even with a stern face, Feng Yi didn’t sense any aura of authority.
Put bluntly, no matter how tough the act, the newbie vibe was unmistakable.
Feng Yi wasn’t in a hurry, just quietly observing the other party. He didn’t have a pass card to enter the bureau.
Eventually, the young investigator couldn’t hold out any longer and broke the silence, taking out his credentials to introduce himself, "Wei Hong Xun, an investigator from the Yang City branch of the Joint Protection Bureau."
"I’m Feng Yi."
"I know, Captain Yuan just recommended you to us, asking for your help."
Investigator Wei had come to pick him up, holding a photo of Feng Yi that Captain Yuan had given him, but seeing the real person, he still couldn’t believe it.
However, since Captain Yuan had strongly endorsed him, Investigator Wei suppressed any doubts he had for the time being.
"Please, follow me."
Investigator Wei led Feng Yi into the bureau and directly to the testing department without detours.
"This way, our Manager Tao from the testing department is waiting inside the testing room."
Before entering, Feng Yi changed into the lab coat that was handed to him.
Coming straight from the flower and bird market, he still carried a fishy smell on him. After changing clothes, the smell was a lot less noticeable, at least to others.
Dressed in the white lab coat, Feng Yi followed Investigator Wei into the testing room.
The manager of the testing department, in his forties, exuded a refined, scholarly air that made him seem amiable and approachable.
But Feng Yi knew that the manager of the testing department at a Joint Protection Bureau branch couldn’t actually be as laid-back as he appeared.
"Manager Tao, I’ve brought the person," said Investigator Wei as they entered, drawing the attention of everyone else in the room.
Manager Tao smiled warmly, "So you are the expert that Captain Yuan has been strongly recommending!"
If someone else had said that, Feng Yi would have felt like they were mocking him, but Manager Tao’s expression and tone seemed to convey a kind of teasing affection from an elder.
Of course, Feng Yi dared not accept the title mentioned by Manager Tao.
In front of professionals, Feng Yi, a "expert" without a license, still needed to display humility.
"I wouldn’t dare claim the title of expert. I just have a bit of a knack for this," said Feng Yi.
"Someone who comes highly recommended by the former captain must be more than just talented. Don’t just stand here; how about we first go to the side room and have some tea and chat? I heard you were called here by Captain Yuan on your way somewhere else."
"There’s no need, let’s just stick to business." Feng Yi didn’t want to have tea with Manager Tao; he wanted to get things done and leave as soon as possible.
"No hurry, come, sit over here and rest for a bit," Manager Tao suggested, pointing to a nearby seat.
After Feng Yi sat down, Manager Tao continued, "Captain Yuan mentioned that you’re very efficient and quick at your identifications, so we can afford a slight delay."
"I heard about the incident at the flower and bird market this afternoon. Was it you who sniffed out the snake scent in the wine glass? And even identified it as a tree python?" Manager Tao’s eyes twinkled with curiosity.
Feng Yi considered for a moment and nodded, "Yes, I smelled it. I think it was the odor of a tree python."
"That’s amazing! I think it would be really hard to tell once it’s been used in wine." This wasn’t disbelief but pure astonishment on the part of Manager Tao.
"Since you have such a talent, have you ever considered working at our testing department here at the Yang City branch of the Joint Protection Bureau?"
Feng Yi: "...No."
The scrutiny for entering the Joint Protection Bureau was stringent, and once inside, there were too many restrictions and frequent overtime. Without real dedication, it wasn’t something just anyone could stick with. Besides, he had a big secret that couldn’t be exposed. What if his little tail suddenly appeared during one of those overtime sessions?
Although he didn’t want to join the Joint Protection Bureau, still...
Feng Yi said, "I’m actually preparing to get certified, for an appraiser’s qualification certificate, specialized in snakes."
Everyone in the testing room, including Investigator Wei who had brought Feng Yi, looked surprised.
"You haven’t got your certification yet?" Investigator Wei could hardly believe it. Captain Yuan had actually recommended someone without a license to help?!
Manager Tao was equally stunned, but he quickly regained his composure and smiled, "There is a test center here in Yang City. I’ve been involved in one or two of the processes. For the appraiser’s qualification certificate, they actually don’t test much theoretical knowledge—it’s mostly about practical skills."
Some people have their own unique methods of identification, but they might not necessarily share them with others.
