Chapter 108: Chapter 97: Fell In_2
"What a coincidence that an owner happened to be walking their dog over there and started shouting when they saw the swans. I don’t know if the little swans were scared by the dogs barking in the neighborhood, but two of them ’crashed’ into your yard."
Feng Yi: "... Which yard did they fall into, the front or the back?"
"The backyard."
Feng Yi: "..."
After rubbing his forehead, Feng Yi asked, "Aren’t swans capable of flying? Can’t they fly out on their own?"
"Well... swans also need a running start to take off, and there’s not enough space in your backyard for that."
Feng Yi understood.
Just like planes need a runway to take off, if it’s too short, they might not be able to get airborne.
The property manager further explained, "Moreover, those little swans might be exhausted after a long flight, and they’re probably shocked, too. We don’t know if they’re injured. Right now, the community manager and rescuers are all here, so, do you think you could come back now?"
Feng Yi: "I’m on my way back now."
There was no way he would let anyone enter his yard without him being present!
After all, he knew exactly what his backyard looked like; the grass grew wildly to ensure better sleep, its height solely the result of being flattened by him, yet it was thick enough!
What was to Feng Yi a quite comfortable mattress of grass might not afford the swans the traction they needed to run and take off. Besides, they could be so exhausted from the long migration that, having fallen into the yard, they might just lay there.
Feng Yi pulled up the surveillance footage from the area to check.
Indeed, two swans were lying in the backyard bushes.
Those swans better not be shitting in his backyard?!
The thought of that hurried Feng Yi along.
He informed Wu Ji and stopped sampling mooncakes, getting ready to leave.
"What’s going on?" Wu Ji asked.
"There are swans in the backyard; I’m rushing back to save them."
Wu Ji: ???
"Swans? Like the little ones mentioned in the news?"
"Yes, those. Two just fell in there. The property management said the community manager and rescuers are waiting, so I’m heading there now."
Wu Ji looked on enviously.
If he weren’t tied down by the store, he’d also like to go have a look! What a rare occurrence! And to be able to take a close-up photo with two swans!
"Take lots of photos for me, Feng Yi! Even better with you in them! Or maybe take some videos, make sure they’re clear! I want to satisfy my curiosity!"
"Sure!"
Feng Yi had no interest in taking photos with swans, but he didn’t mind helping them out by filming some videos—it was no trouble at all.
After responding to a client, he indicated he had no time at noon but could come by for appraisal in the afternoon.
The client sent him an address for the store; he could go directly there in the afternoon. She had already spoken to the store manager; Feng Yi could just ask for the manager upon his arrival.
Having confirmed the time with the client, Feng Yi drove back to the Yue Xiu residential area.
He was well aware of how much attention these little swans had been drawing; now with two in his yard, he couldn’t fathom how many people were eying the spot. Luckily, he had just tidied up his house, so it wouldn’t be too embarrassing.
As he drove back, people were waiting at the entrance of the neighborhood. As soon as they saw Feng Yi’s license plate, they immediately used walkie-talkies to notify others.
At this moment, around Feng Yi’s house, over a dozen people were waiting, and others were stationed not far away, keeping anyone else from approaching.
And this was just what could be seen; who knows how many people were watching from outside the neighborhood.
The presence of all these people showed just how much they valued these swans!
Feng Yi’s backyard didn’t have a gate, and since Feng Yi had been sleeping out there before, a wall blocked the view from outside, completely concealing what was within.
Feng Yi opened the door and led the community leader and the rescuers into the house.
The backyard was separate from the front yard, and one needed to walk through the house to get there. Those who followed Feng Yi inside didn’t look around randomly, and even if they noticed some of the walls peeling and the ground seeming uneven, they didn’t comment. It was the homeowner’s business, and they wouldn’t ask too much. Besides, they were most concerned about the two swans in the backyard and had no time to pay attention to anything else.
But when they saw the grass in Feng Yi’s backyard, they were taken aback.
The backyard grass was too peculiar.
Other people’s yards were full of flowers, trees, and other decorative plants, but Feng Yi’s backyard seemed to be all sorts of grass, and the whole area of grass looked as if it had been completely flattened, overall resembling a large grass mat.
The community leader couldn’t help but ask, "Mr. Feng’s backyard, is this styled deliberately?"
"Hmm."
Feng Yi certainly couldn’t tell them that during his period of weight gain, he had rolled around in it. The grass grew crooked because of his rolling, shaping it artificially.
The community leader even crouched down, stretched out his hand to touch the grass, and pressed down a bit.
"This texture, it’s quite nice."
However, the community leader’s attention quickly shifted back to the two swans, and the rescuers headed straight for the fowl upon entering the backyard.
"No injuries, they just seem exhausted and frightened," said the rescuer.
"That’s good," the community leader looked back at Feng Yi, an apologetic expression on his face, "Sorry for troubling you."
"No problem."
Recalling the news he had read, Feng Yi asked, "There won’t be any more swans landing in my yard, will there?"
"That won’t happen. Generally, wild swans won’t fly into residential areas, they just move around nearby. Plus, after today’s incident, the community has tightened UAV regulations, so the next flock of swans won’t get startled again," replied the community leader.
Reassured by the community leader’s words, Feng Yi relaxed. He didn’t fancy running daily from the city to fish swans out of his yard.
The rescuers took the two swans out and released them on the riverbank.
Soon, the two swans flapped their wings and plunged into the river, swimming back to their clan, their calls ringing out, but not like the trumpet-like honking of larger swans.
"Looking good!" The rescuer watched the two swans gliding over the water’s surface, a relieved smile spreading across his face.
Feng Yi stood on his own balcony, watching the young swans swim back and forth on the river.
Across the river, a family group of small swans appeared to be quarreling, each shaking their necks and calling loudly.
The family group closer to this side seemed to have discovered some delicacy, gathering together to dip their slender necks into the water and peck at their food.
Feng Yi took out his phone to adjust the frame and capture the swans foraging.
He saw the swans not only dipping their necks into the water but also performing an upside-down stance.
Their snow-white bottoms faced directly at the camera lens.
The swan with its back to Feng Yi turned its body back over, shook its tail feathers after stretching its neck out of the water, and dived back down to forage, upside-down. A black webbed foot paddled the surface, and their buoyant bottoms drifted to one side, standing upright.
This was Feng Yi’s first time seeing swans forage.
Such an elegant body was unexpectedly a bit goofy when eating.
"Quite cute," remarked Feng Yi, amused.
Feng Yi’s interest piqued. There were many elegant creatures in the world, but this kind of goofy elegance was truly precious.
As Feng Yi was recording, the sound of flapping wings came from the sky.
Three swans descended from the air, tracing an elegant curve, and landed in Feng Yi’s backyard.
Feng Yi: "..."
The rescuers and community leaders, delighted to see more swans arrive: "..."
The kid watching the swans from the balcony next door: "Yoooooooo~u dropped in!"
With an expressionless face, Feng Yi flipped out his phone to dial the property management’s number, "I’m applying for renovations again!"
