Chapter 836: Chapter 0836: Continue the Investigation

Police officer Zhao Ruxue had just entered, immediately attracting the attention of the female sales clerks in the jewelry store. She had come once yesterday, so some of the clerks still had an impression of her.

Seeing her now, they knew she was definitely here to investigate the jewelry theft case.

"Hello, our store manager is in the office."

One of the female clerks said.

"Hello, could I borrow your mirror to take a look?"

Zhao Ruxue turned to a clerk who was currently using a mirror to check her reflection and asked.

"Sure."

She took the mirror and looked at her own complexion. Her face seemed haggard, possibly due to lack of sleep. However, the area between her eyebrows appeared unusually dark, uneven with her usual vitality.

"How could this happen?"

Zhao Ruxue wondered.

She had always firmly believed in science, but ever since encountering the living dead incident, her worldview had been shaken. She found the world to be far more complex than it appeared on the surface.

This darkened area might truly signify an omen of bloodshed.

However, Zhao Ruxue put that thought aside for now and focused on her task. She took the suspect’s photograph and headed to the store manager to inquire whether any buyer details could be found.

The store manager was handling some matters in the office. When he saw Officer Zhao coming again, he asked, "Officer Zhao, is there anything I can assist you with?"

"We found a suspicious individual while reviewing the surveillance footage. We were wondering if you recorded any details about this person when selling them jewelry that day!"

Zhao Ruxue showed the suspect’s photograph to the store manager, but he didn’t recognize it. He took it outside to show the clerks instead.

Meanwhile, Ye Qiu sat waiting. He was convinced the suspect wouldn’t have been foolish enough to leave behind any useful traces since they dared to openly gather intelligence.

Indeed, after Zhao Ruxue reviewed residence records that afternoon, she couldn’t locate any information on the suspect. This strongly suggested the person was either a foreigner or someone living off-the-grid.

Overall, Ye Qiu knew that although they managed to extract the suspect’s photo from the surveillance footage, finding further information to identify them was incredibly difficult.

Moreover, given Jinling’s size, if the suspects hadn’t already fled the city, they were likely hiding somewhere within it.

It was also possible they might strike again tonight if they weren’t concerned about exposure.

After all, the past two evenings’ incidents had caught the police completely off guard.

The store manager asked the clerks once more about the suspect’s photograph and retrieved old sales records. The only receipt contained the name "Mr. Song," but the phone number provided was clearly fake, missing several digits.

"Please give me a copy of this receipt. I need it for the City Police Bureau."

The store manager directed someone to make a copy and handed it over to Zhao Ruxue.

As Zhao Ruxue and Ye Qiu left the store, Zhao Ruxue appeared even more worn out.

Once inside the car, Ye Qiu asked, "Ruxue, where are we heading now?"

"Sigh! It seems we still can’t figure out where the suspects are. Without evidence, we can’t issue a nationwide alert yet."

If it could be confirmed that this suspect was the mastermind behind the major jewelry heist, a media announcement could be made immediately to launch a manhunt.

However, since confirmation was lacking, issuing such notices about suspects was strictly prohibited.

For now, Zhao Ruxue decided not to proceed to the second jewelry store but instead to investigate last night’s burglarized jewelry stores.

"Let’s head to Zhongshan Road. Several jewelry stores there were robbed last night."

Zhao Ruxue instructed.

Ye Qiu drove toward Zhongshan Road, one of the more bustling areas in Jiangnan. Similar to Jiangnan Road earlier, jewelry stores were separated by only tens of meters here.

However, the stolen jewelry stores weren’t part of Zhou Dabao Jewelry Group but rather belonged to other brands, such as Zhou Dafu and Jin Dafu.

When Ye Qiu parked outside a Zhou Dafu jewelry store, the location was usually off-limits for parking because it was reserved for store operations.

But last night, the store had been burglarized, with interior and exterior glass panes and display cabinets completely shattered.

After Ye Qiu parked the car, both he and Zhao Ruxue got out and entered the store. Ye Qiu noticed the two large glass windows, used as walls and over 20 centimeters thick, were completely smashed. It had to be done with specialized machinery; human strength alone couldn’t break through them.

As Zhao Ruxue headed inside, Ye Qiu stayed back examining the shattered windows. He was genuinely shocked—such glass was so durable that even with his cultivation abilities, he doubted he could break through, let alone smash them entirely.

The suspects likely entered through these shattered windows to steal the jewelry inside.

Ye Qiu noted that this Zhou Dafu store was twice the size of Zhou Dabao’s flagship store. Its glass display counters were far more numerous, almost all of them now broken to pieces. Only a few scattered jewelry items remained, while the rest had been taken.

"Who here is the store manager?"

"I’m the store manager."

A woman in her thirties wearing a short skirt stepped forward.

She had been resting last night when she abruptly received the police alert informing her about the robbery.

"Hello, my last name is Zhao. I’m a member of the task force investigating these jewelry thefts."

Zhao Ruxue showed her work credentials, and the woman, recognizing her identity, invited her inside.

Zhao Ruxue followed the store manager, surnamed Tang, into the office and began gathering information.

"What time did you close the store last night?"

"We operate until 10:30 PM, then clean up before leaving around 11:30 PM to rest."

"What’s the estimated loss from this incident?"

"After inventory this morning, roughly 30 million yuan in jewelry was stolen."

Store Manager Tang explained.

"Have you noticed anyone suspicious recently? Why didn’t you have adequate security measures in place, especially after hearing about previous thefts? Don’t you have security guards here?"

"We haven’t noticed anyone suspicious. Regarding security, we do have surveillance cameras and two guards patrolling in shifts. However, the security guard working the night shift yesterday... something happened to him."

"Something happened?"

This revelation startled Zhao Ruxue!

She had attended a briefing around four or five o’clock in the morning and didn’t even know the guard here had an incident.
