Chapter 866: Chapter 0866: One Slipped Away

After practicing military boxing in the afternoon, just as Wu Shuang was about to announce the dismissal, Ye Qiu noticed that the counselor Song Ying, who hadn’t been seen for several days, was walking over.

"Students, I have something to discuss with you."

Song Ying said as she approached.

"Here’s the situation: in a few days, after the military training ends, the school will host a welcome event for new students. Every class is required to perform one or two programs. Use these few days after the training ends to see if you can rehearse a few good performances. Then, select two to report up for the final event!"

Upon hearing about this, Ye Qiu, like most classmates, immediately lost interest.

On top of that, since the class was dominated by male students, there were very few who were into performing arts. If it were students from the Music Academy or the Fine Arts Academy, they would probably be much keener.

"Think it over tonight. I’ll come by tomorrow. By the way, there will be awards for the performances in this welcome event, and the winners will receive substantial bonus prizes!"

Song Ying added before leaving.

But after Song Ying left, the other students gradually dispersed. Having just finished military training, everyone was exhausted and no one had the energy to rehearse anything.

It was much more appealing to grab dinner and retreat to play games.

On his way back to the boys’ dormitory, Ye Qiu changed out of his military uniform and handed it over to Luo Yang to have it washed and dried for him. After taking a shower, Ye Qiu thought about Zhao Ruxue’s situation and decided not to join Luo Yang and the others for dinner.

After getting into his car, Ye Qiu called Zhao Ruxue, who picked up the call and asked, "Ruxue, where are you?"

"I just got off work. These past few days have been so exhausting!"

Replied Zhao Ruxue from the other end.

With Ye Qiu’s assistance, she managed to bring down eight criminals single-handedly. Even though some credit had to be shared with the deputy chief, this achievement was still significant.

However, even with those criminals caught, there were many follow-up matters waiting to be addressed.

"Have you had dinner?"

"Not yet, I was planning to eat at my mom’s place."

"Let me take you out for dinner!"

After agreeing on dinner with Zhao Ruxue, Ye Qiu drove toward the City Police Bureau.

When he arrived at the police bureau gates, after a little wait, he saw Zhao Ruxue walking out dressed in casual clothes.

She opened the passenger door and got into Ye Qiu’s car, as he reversed and drove away.

"I’m going to take you to have a buffet dinner. Consider it a celebration for your success!"

Previously, Ye Qiu had mentioned to Zhao Rubing that he’d take Zhao Ruxue out for dinner if she accomplished her mission successfully.

"I don’t mind wherever we eat."

Ye Qiu drove to the buffet restaurant and parked his car. He went upstairs with Zhao Ruxue, and despite it being dinner time, the place wasn’t very crowded—likely because the buffet here was expensive.

Ye Qiu bought two meal tickets and they washed their hands before sitting near a window. Zhao Ruxue then went to grab some food.

She’d been so busy recently that all her meals had been at the police bureau cafeteria.

Compared to most people’s meals, the bureau’s food was actually quite good—standard four dishes and a soup, clean, with a lot of variety. However, Zhao Ruxue didn’t enjoy eating there.

Still, due to her hectic schedule, she had no choice but to eat at the cafeteria.

Now at the buffet restaurant, both the environment and the food were excellent.

"I came here with Rubing a few days ago."

"That explains it."

Zhao Ruxue shot him a playful glare.

After they picked out some delicious food and sat back down, they ate and chatted. Ye Qiu asked, "Were the other criminals apprehended?"

"They caught eight from that group as well. Whether it’s everyone, the City Police Bureau isn’t sure yet. These past few days, the bureau has been interrogating them, but the criminals unanimously insist there are only sixteen of them in total."

Ye Qiu found it suspicious.

But there wasn’t much they could do; it wasn’t possible to capture all of them in one sweep.

"Who are these people?"

"Exactly as you suspected. They used to be mercenaries in Southeast Asia, mostly operating in the Golden Triangle region. Recently, with business declining in the Golden Triangle, the first group of nine infiltrated here to rob banks—bad luck for them to run into you."

"What about the second group?"

"The second team were also members of the same mercenary gang. Their main mission this time was to rescue the first nine, but they ended up losing their lives too. During the crossfire at the intersection, several armed police officers were injured. In the urban village, two elderly civilians were found dead. Automatic rifles and heavy weapons like AK-47s tied to these gang members were also discovered. If they hadn’t been caught promptly, the consequences would’ve been unimaginable."

"What about the stolen jewelry?"

"You guessed it right again. Over two consecutive nights, they robbed eight jewelry stores, packing all the loot into burlap sacks. Then they buried everything in a site in the outskirts. A few days ago, the police managed to retrieve everything. However, some of the jewelry was already deformed during the process. It’s likely that the stores will need to recollect the damaged pieces, resulting in partial losses despite most items being recovered."

To say the least, Zhao Ruxue felt Ye Qiu was remarkable.

Despite not being part of law enforcement, he seemed to know everything. She couldn’t figure out how he did it.

Because of Ye Qiu, Zhao Ruxue had twice achieved major accomplishments, which earned her admiration throughout the City Police Bureau.

There’s even talk at the bureau about keeping her stationed there instead of transferring her back to the Jiangbei division.

But Zhao Ruxue preferred returning to the district police station—she felt the freedom there and fewer hassles suited her style.

...

After they finished the buffet dinner, it was already past eight at night. When they left the restaurant and got back into the car, Ye Qiu didn’t drive straight back but headed toward the Qinhuai River.

Once they arrived at the Qinhuai River, Ye Qiu and Zhao Ruxue got out of the car. Zhao Ruxue thought Ye Qiu was simply looking to walk off the full meal and aid digestion.

"You injured yourself back at Qixia Mountain the other day, didn’t you?"

"My right foot got sprained there, and you treated it for me, didn’t you?"

That time, while being pursued by gun-toting criminals with heavy weapons, Zhao Ruxue accidentally misstepped and fell, severely twisting her right foot—it was so painful it was unbearable.

Yet, somehow, Ye Qiu treated her right on the spot.

Having witnessed Ye Qiu’s incredible medical skills over and over, she wasn’t surprised anymore.

As they found a place to sit, Ye Qiu took her hand, prompting Zhao Ruxue to ask, "What are you doing?"

"The scars on your hands and legs from those plants in the mountains."

Ye Qiu rolled up her sleeve and saw several marks on her fair skin, left from their trek through the mountains.

But these didn’t matter much to Zhao Ruxue—it wasn’t a big deal to her.

"It’s fine. It doesn’t hurt anyway."
