The morning sun filtered through the shoji screen, waking Hayao to the scent of miso soup and grilled fish from downstairs. He sat up, his body sore but sated, his mind replaying the night’s passion. The futon was empty, Shina’s presence gone, her t-shirt missing from the floor. He checked the hallway, but it was silent, the guest house stirring with the day’s routine.

Downstairs, Kanae was setting out breakfast, her tanned skin glowing, her red kerchief bright against her brown hair. “Morning, Hayao,” she said, her smile warm, oblivious to the night’s events. “Sleep well?”

“Yeah,” he lied, his eyes searching for Shina, but she was nowhere to be seen. He took his seat, his thoughts tangled—Shina’s body, Kanae’s allure, the stopwatch’s dark promise.
