Chapter 476: Episode 260 A Good Start

Last night, the lights in old Mrs. Meng’s room stayed on all night, and Meng Yuhuai also struggled to fall asleep for a long time. Only Hua Xiaomai immediately fell into a deep sleep as soon as her head hit the pillow due to the exhaustion from the day’s events. When she opened her eyes again, it was already daylight.

Only then did she remember that she had forgotten to inform Meng Yuhuai last night to accompany her to see Doctor Xing today. She thought he had left home and a rush of panic set in. She hurriedly got out of bed, and, with her shoes half-on, ran outside, only to run straight into Meng Yuhuai and old Mrs. Meng coming out of their rooms one after the other.

The eyes of old Mrs. Meng were red as if she had been crying, but her complexion looked much better than yesterday. Meng Yuhuai, walking ahead of her, although still appeared calm, had a look of relief between his brows.

No way!

Hua Xiaomai felt so regretful she wanted to pinch her own thigh.

What in the world had happened at home while she was asleep, oblivious to everything? Those two were too much, missing such a perfect opportunity to watch the drama!

Burning bridges after crossing the river, huh...

"Awake now?"

Before she could snap out of her regret, old Mrs. Meng had already coolly started speaking, huffing, "The relatives you drove away, from now on, I don’t even think about going back to that old place!"

"Don’t act all innocent and smug!" Hua Xiaomai glared back at her, "I suspect that you never really planned on going back there, did you? Now that you’re in a good mood, you start with your sarcastic remarks, blaming others. I was busy all day yesterday, lifting and moving stuff around, and now my back is still sore!"

"Are you serious?" old Mrs. Meng was taken aback and hastily pulled her to sit by the table, and began to ramble non-stop, "What did I say? You always try to show off your strength. Don’t you think about whether you’re really capable of that?"

Looking her over back and forth, seeing nothing really amiss, she then turned to Meng Yuhuai, "What are you standing around for? Quick, go bring the ox cart over, we need to take your wife to the city to see Doctor Xing! I’m telling you, don’t take it lightly, a pregnant woman with back pain could be a major or minor issue!"

Meng Yuhuai, well aware of what kind of person Hua Xiaomai was, was evidently much calmer than old Mrs. Meng. He glanced at his wife and with a hint of a smile asked, "This is no joking matter, how do you really feel?"

Hua Xiaomai didn’t answer his question and, with a playful smile, said, "Are you concerned about me or about the one in my stomach?"

"Nonsense, what else could you be but secondary to what’s in your stomach!" old Mrs. Meng groused ungraciously, and pursued the matter relentlessly, "Come on, what’s really going on?"

"Just scaring you." Hua Xiaomai chuckled, "But I still plan to go see Doctor Xing, just to be safe."

old Mrs. Meng immediately felt a rush of irritation and seemed ready to hit her but hesitated and eventually did not follow through. She spat on the ground and muttered coldly, "It must be because I’ve been too nice to you lately, you’re getting too big for your boots. Didn’t I tell you? Once the baby is born, I am going to settle accounts with you. You might feel pleased now, but don’t cry later!"

With that, she urged Meng Yuhuai to hurry to the tavern to fetch the ox cart while she herself went to the kitchen and quickly prepared breakfast.

Soon after, once breakfast was over, Hua Xiaomai truly boarded the ox cart, heading to Fuzhe County with Meng Yuhuai.

In July, the sun was still extremely fierce. After being in it for a while, she felt as if she was going to melt. Meng Yuhuai, considerate as usual, had already moved a stack of hay onto the ox cart for her to hide behind, popping her head out every now and then to exchange a few words with him.

"Hey." She stretched out her arm, poking the man in front in the back, and chuckled with pursed lips, "Why aren’t you talking to me? Don’t tell me you’re holding a grudge because I was too harsh last night? That’s petty! Although I think I wasn’t wrong, but if you think otherwise, why can’t you just plainly say so instead of giving me the cold shoulder?"

Meng Yuhuai, squinting against the bright sun, glanced back at her and laughed, "When have I ever given you the cold shoulder? How can you accuse me of such a thing?"

He paused, then sobered up, saying seriously, "You spoke well, if I still can’t hear it, I might as well have not spent all this time with you. To think about it, if it hadn’t been for your reminder, I might not have considered what my mother was feeling. It’s not something that can be resolved in a day or two, but at least... rest assured, I did take your words to heart."

"I knew you would be reasonable." Hua Xiaomai was quite relieved and patted his shoulder, "Talking to someone like you is the least troubling."
