Chapter 274: Episode 161 Can’t Wait_2

Meng Yuhuai had always been popular. Yesterday, when he got married, he invited many villagers, and there was much drinking and merry-making. The commotion was indeed not small. The Guan Family’s compound was separated from the Meng Family’s by only a wall. To say they couldn’t hear the noise was naturally impossible.

However, for the entire day, their home maintained a closed-off state. There was no sign of activity within the house, nor were there people coming and going. Even Old Master Guan, who went out daily to work in the fields, did not show his face. It was unknown what he thought upon hearing the joyous noises from next door.

The downside of living so close was exactly this: You didn’t see them when you looked up, but they were there when you looked down. It was impossible to avoid them. Previously, Old Lady Meng had a complete fallout with the Guan Family over the fuss caused by Guan Rong, and she had firmly decided to sever ties with them. However, there was only a wall separating the two families, and it was incredibly awkward when they encountered each other.

Guan Rong’s mother also saw Meng Yuhuai and Hua Xiaomai together. She paused mid-step, her face became half-darkened with anger. She stood at her own doorway, neither walking away nor entering the house, just staring straight at them while secretly grinding her teeth.

Her daughter had been sick for a month or two, and no matter how many medicines they poured into her or how much money was spent, there was no sign of improvement; instead, she seemed to deteriorate day by day. And yet, these two had the audacity to appear so rosy and well-rested! It was broad daylight, and there were people all over the village. They were standing so close to each other without any sense of propriety, truly shameless!

She never expected that the two had already become husband and wife. Even if they were more intimate, it was no business of hers. She grinded her teeth so hard they nearly screeched, her eyes hooking onto the couple like claws, and the other half of her face darkened as if she wanted to tear them apart and devour them.

Meng Yuhuai had faced numerous mountain and river bandits over the years, and the most vicious people were nothing in his eyes. Why would he be afraid of her? He gave her a nod without any expression, whether intentionally or not. He then brazenly took Hua Xiaomai by the hand and walked away. Hua Xiaomai, feeling justified and with him by her side, walked confidently to the entrance of her own courtyard. Just as she was about to enter, she suddenly turned her head, bared her teeth at Guan Rong’s mother, and made a grotesque face.

Guan Rong’s mother, caught off guard by such immaturity, was momentarily stunned, then so enraged she nearly passed out. She wanted to hurl a few insults, but by then, the couple had already entered their courtyard and shut the door behind them with a loud bang.

With her anger having no outlet, she forgot what she had initially set out to do. Standing at the door for a moment, she then stomped back into the house, heading to her daughter’s room. Seeing Guan Rong lying on the bed with faint breathing, she was overcome with worry and couldn’t help but shed a few tears.

...

In the following two or three days, Hua Xiaomai and Meng Yuhuai stayed together from morning until night, acting as inseparable as one. Old Lady Meng naturally found this a bit irksome, and when she had some free time, she opened the dowry box she had secretly kept for herself, only to find it filled with brightly colored fabrics she could never wear. This made her even angrier.

Yet she knew her son’s character best. After the quarrel early that morning, she couldn’t help but to hold a bit of dread, and even though she was displeased, she had to endure in silence. For several days, she did not pick fights or cause trouble with Hua Xiaomai.

On the third day, when it was time to return to the bride’s home, Meng Yuhuai prepared roast pork and a four-assortment gift set early. He accompanied Hua Xiaomai back to the Jing Family’s small courtyard in the west of the village, ate the unpalatable meal made by Second Mother Hua, and stayed there for the whole day.

According to Second Mother Hua and Jing Taihe’s wishes, they originally planned to have the couple stay over for the night. However, Meng Yuhuai, knowing that the newlyweds shouldn’t share a room upon returning, thought over it and politely declined, leading Hua Xiaomai home in the evening as usual.

That night, after shutting the door to their room, it went without saying that he passionately embraced his petite wife. Hua Xiaomai was tossed about until she nearly fell apart, begging for mercy, but this man had only been improving his prowess over the past few days. Ignoring her pleas, he persisted until past midnight before finally letting her rest.

The room was filled with an intimate atmosphere. Hua Xiaomai rested her head on Meng Yuhuai’s chest, her ears filled with his steady and strong heartbeat. She entwined a lock of his hair around her fingers and, after much thought, couldn’t resist looking up cautiously and saying, "That... you heard it too the other day, right?"

"What?" Meng Yuhuai, still breathless, lowered his head to kiss her eyes.

"My restaurant has been closed for several days. People have been concerned and even came to inquire," Hua Xiaomai pursed her lips, "If it remains closed, they will be so disappointed..."

Meng Yuhuai guessed that she was worried about this, a smile formed on his lips, and he chuckled, "I heard, and I promised you that once we returned home, you could go back to running your business. So? When do you plan to reopen for business?"

Hua Xiaomai’s eyes lit up, she eagerly looked at him and said hastily, "Tomorrow I want to notify sisters Chun Xi and La Mei first, and then reopen the day after tomorrow. Is that okay?"

"You can’t wait?" Meng Yuhuai slightly frowned, "I finally got a few days of leisure, but if you’re going to be busy with the business, you’ll have to stay in the east part of the village from morning until night, and I..."

He couldn’t bring himself to say things like "I’ll miss you" or "I’ll be worried." Instead, he just awkwardly cleared his throat and pulled her in closer.

"Why don’t you come with me? Didn’t you say you’d back me up?" Hua Xiaomai clung to his arm and sweet-talked him with several calls of "Yuhuai brother, my good husband," clearly determined not to give up until he agreed.

Meng Yuhuai was so badgered by her persistence that he had no choice but to nod in agreement.

"Let’s get this straight first, you can’t stay there too late at night, and you mustn’t overexert yourself. Can you promise me that?"

"Yes, yes, yes!" Hua Xiaomai had no reason to refuse. She wrapped her arms around his neck, planted a big kiss on his face, and buried herself in his neck, laughing in a muffled voice.
