Chapter 246: Chapter 147: Setting a Trap_2

Guan Rong’s mother’s heart had risen to her throat, and for some reason, her right eyelid began to twitch uncontrollably, and her hands and legs trembled slightly. She stepped forward and called out, "Rong girl," but no one answered from inside. Turning to Meng Yuhuai with a pained expression, she said, "Look at this, what do we do now? It’s already the ninth month, and it’s not as hot as the days before. The pot of hot water I boiled for her has been sitting for so long, it’s sure to be cold by now, and her delicate body, how can it withstand this?"

Indeed, she was genuinely worried, fearing that Guan Rong had encountered some mishap inside, which was why her voice shook, and she cast her gaze downward, not daring to look at him.

Meng Yuhuai did not speak. He walked to the side, raised his hand with a little force, and pushed the window, but it was immovable as if blocked by something inside.

The bathing rooms in rural courtyards are usually made of wooden planks and are not very sturdy. As for the windows, most are simply cut out of the planks for ventilation and should not be so tightly sealed. Being trained in martial arts, he used extra strength in his hands; even if someone had bolted it from the inside, it should not be impossible to push open.

He harbored a certain suspicion in his heart, and when he looked at Guan Rong’s mother again, his gaze sharpened.

"Aunt, you need not worry. I will find a way to open the door, then you can go in and see what’s the situation with the Guan family’s sister," he said.

After these words, he returned to the door, pulled Guan Rong’s mother over, and with a raise of his leg gave a kick. The rickety wooden door, which was already a bit unstable, disconnected from the frame, fell backward, and crashed onto the ground with a "bang".

"You..." He turned his head, about to let Guan Rong’s mother go inside, but unexpectedly, the woman, as if unable to bear such a shock, suddenly rolled her eyes up, and with a thud, she fell to the ground, as if she had fainted.

Meng Yuhuai’s work over the years involved traveling all over, seeing a lot of places and many things, well-aware that people can do anything to achieve their goals.

Guan Rong’s mother lay on the ground, unresponsive to his calls. He glanced sideways into the bathing room and directly saw a pale arm lying over the edge of the tub, and two inches up, a round shoulder.

He quickly averted his gaze, his heart filled with rage, he turned his back and briskly walked away.

If he truly entered the bathing room today, he would likely have fallen into the mother and daughter’s trap!

Guan Rong’s mother, feigning unconsciousness on the ground, squinted towards him, hoping he would quickly enter, thereby sealing the deal. Not expecting him to simply turn and leave, she panicked, leaping up and in a few strides, grabbed the tail of Meng Yuhuai’s clothes.

"Where are you going? You can’t leave!" Her voice was distorted in her urgency, she yelled hoarsely, "My daughter is still inside, life and death unknown, you... you’ve seen her body and now you’re ready to leave just like that? Yuhuai, stop!"

Her cries were frantic, in her desperation she ignored all else. A fury consumed Meng Yuhuai, his teeth grinding loudly, and though his voice was not loud, his tone was icy, "Aunt, you know perfectly well what’s going on today, much clearer than me. Stop this nonsense at once. I respect you as an elder and don’t wish to speak ill, but let me say just one thing— you and your daughter, miscalculated."

After pushing her aside, he turned and left the courtyard.

He exerted quite a bit of force, and Guan Rong’s mother could not stand her ground. Toppling back to the ground, sounds of water splashed from the washing room could be heard, as Guan Rong was attempting to climb out of the tub, drenched and naked as a jaybird, resembling a ghost in the pitch-black room. Ignoring her own pain, she hastily rushed in to push her back into the water, firmly closed the door, and bolted after him.

At this point, she had nothing left to lose. She dashed into the Meng Family’s courtyard and stubbornly clung to Meng Yuhuai, her voice breaking with sobs, "You can’t just leave like this, how is my daughter supposed to face anyone in the future?"

Before she finished speaking, Old Lady Meng happened to enter from outside. Seeing this scene, she was taken aback and said loudly, "Auntie, what on earth are you doing?"

Guan Rong’s mother, as if seeing a savior, rushed over and embraced her, weeping bitterly, "Your son has seen my daughter in her entirety, and now he turns his back on her. You must stand up for my Rong!"

...

This sort of news was always the favorite topic in the village alleys, and before half a day had passed, the entire Fire Knife Village knew, even the three-year-old children would ask innocently, "What happened to the Meng Family?"

Hua Xiaomai’s restaurant was quite far from the village, and not many villagers would come this way during the day, so not a whisper of the news had reached her. She just sat in the shop, worrying as she looked at the empty hall.

In the evening, a few individual guests trickled in from the official road, ordered a couple of dishes, and quickly left after eating. Hua Xiaomai, lacking in spirit, was thinking of letting Chun Xi and La Mei close the shop early to go home when she noticed Hua Erniang bursting in frantically.

"My goodness, what are you doing?" Hua Xiaomai got a fright and quickly came forward to support her, "Don’t you realize what a state you’re in? Running around like this could lead to disaster if..."

"Shut your mouth!" Hua Erniang, with heart racing with urgency, was in no mood for chitchat. Grabbing her hand, unconcerned that Chun Xi and La Mei were also present, she blurted out, "Listen to me, there’s been a catastrophe! This afternoon, Guan Rong’s mother..."

Hua Xiaomai listened quietly until she finished, feeling as if something were lodged in her heart, a stifled breath stuck, unable to be released. After a moment of silence, she finally asked, "What is she intending?"

"What else could she intend?" Hua Erniang was so angry her head spun, and she spat on the ground, "It’s nothing but her trying to force the Meng family’s eldest to take her sickly daughter as a wife. It’s infuriating me..."

Hua Xiaomai had no patience for further ramblings. She untied her apron and ran out the door.

"You mustn’t go!" Hua Erniang tried to chase after her but was restrained by Chun Xi and La Mei who could only stamp their feet in frustration, "What are you going to do running to the Guan Family now?"

"I’m not looking for anyone with the surname Guan!" Hua Xiaomai tossed back those words and plunged into the vast night. (To be continued.
