Chapter 194: Chapter 121 Buying Land (1) (1 more update)

Buying land, something Hua Xiaomai had never considered before she arrived at Fire Knife Village, had never even occurred to her from childhood. Yet, after living for more than half a year in this small village, she gradually understood the significance of farming to the villagers, having one’s own land often meant security for life.

Since she was destined to live here, when in Rome, do as the Romans do, right?

"Buy land?" Hua Ermu raised her beautiful eyebrows in confusion, "Why this strange idea all of a sudden? Don’t we already have a vegetable patch behind the house? Isn’t it enough as long as we have enough vegetables? Your brother-in-law runs a blacksmith shop and works there from dawn to dusk; you need to be busy running the stall and cooking. You have no spare time. All the household chores fall on my shoulders. I’m so busy I hardly touch the ground. Who would take care of it if we bought land? Do you think farming is easy? It takes a lot of effort!"

Her fiery temper, flaring up after just a few words, made Hua Xiaomai quickly pat her hand resting on her knee and respond with a cheerful smile, "No, Second Sister, you’ve misunderstood me. Didn’t we just harvest a lot of chilis? Even if we only keep half of them for seeds, our small vegetable patch next year won’t be able to hold them all. If we don’t buy land, what will we do? I’m not planning to buy much, just one or two mu. We’re not buying paddy fields. Although it’ll cost us some money, we can still afford it."

Jing Taihe listened silently at the side, thought it over carefully, and then with a smile said to Hua Xiaomai, "The fields have just been harvested of spring wheat, and there is some time before the winter wheat needs to be sown. At this time, some cash-strapped villagers might sell their land, making it a good time for us to buy. But, Sister, since we’re not planning to grow grains and can’t sow the chilis until next February or March, wouldn’t it be a waste if the land we bought just lay fallow for a while?"

Hua Xiaomai, unhurried, stuffed a bun filled with steamed beef into Jing Taihe’s hands and said with a smile, "I just thought of this layer and wanted to discuss it with you, Second Sister and brother-in-law. Oh, and Yuhuai, you help think this through too to see if it’s feasible."

Meng Yuhuai, hearing her mention him specifically, slightly raised his eyelids and nodded.

"If the purchased land just stays unused, it would indeed be a bit of a pity. Right now, our vegetable patch behind the house is full of vegetables. If we really bought land, this June or July we could grow cabbage, beans, and green garlic among other vegetables. By around October, we could harvest a batch. If we’re lucky and the weather’s good, we might even plant another batch. Then next February or March, after we’ve harvested all the vegetables, we could plow the land again, fertilize it, and it would be just right for planting chilis," Hua Xiaomai explained.

"If we could do that, it would indeed be quite nice," Jing Taihe, hearing this, showed a slight smile and said, "Sister runs a stall by the riverbank every day and needs various kinds of vegetables. If we had our own land, we could grow more and wouldn’t have to spend money to buy them. Although we don’t expect to make a large profit from the vegetables grown on that one or two mu of land, being self-sufficient and perhaps earning something small in return would be quite nice."

"Exactly!" Hua Xiaomai clapped her hands joyfully, squinting her eyes, "Brother-in-law, our thoughts really do align!"

Meng Yuhuai, after pondering for a moment, also nodded and said, "I also think this makes sense. The plot behind your house won’t hold that many chilis; buying land seems inevitable."

Hua Ermu looked from one to another, nonchalantly pursing her lips, "Chilis do taste good and are quite strong, but why grow so many? Even if Sister sells them every day at her stall, she can’t use them all! Everyone else grows grains everywhere and only we would be growing chilis across one or two mu of land. If people saw us, they would definitely think we are crazy!"

"Ah, Second Sister, you really are..." Hua Xiaomai, half laughing, half crying, couldn’t speak straightforwardly since Luo Yuejiao was also there. She just stomped her foot, "How can you not understand?"

"How can I understand if you don’t explain everything clearly? If you want to discuss it with me, you should spill it all at once. Keeping some information back, how can I know what you are thinking if I’m not the worm in your belly?"
