Chapter 417: Chapter 417: Just a Fifth-rank Alchemist! (3rd Update)
Upon hearing Li Rong’s words, Deng Yongshi’s face turned red with anger immediately. Now, all the younger members of the Deng family were watching her become the butt of the joke; she wished she could find a crack in the ground to crawl into.
Ling Feng simply shrugged nonchalantly. As long as he kept the promise of not speaking out to Deng Yongshi, that was enough; spats between younger members of a family were all too common, and he felt no need to get involved.
Thus, Ling Feng acted as if he hadn’t heard anything, not even glancing in Deng Yongshi’s direction. He merely patted Deng Yongshi on the shoulder and said indifferently, "Let’s go."
Deng Yongshi looked at Ling Feng and saw that his demeanor was calm and unhurried, as if he hadn’t seen the mockery and laughter around him. She bit her lip and reflected that her own state of mind was far from Ling Feng’s.
Li Rong, seeing that Ling Feng didn’t even bother to give her a single glance, felt her pride wounded and scoffed with a fake smile, "Mr. Ling seems to be quite aloof! But I don’t really know what Mr. Ling is capable of. To be personally invited by my grandfather to teach my cousin, you must be extraordinary!"
"As a side note, my teacher is a vice president of the Alchemy Master Guild, not too impressive, just a Fifth-rank Alchemist with some minor renown in the Imperial City. I imagine Mr. Ling wouldn’t be any less capable!"
It was obvious that Li Rong intended to embarrass Deng Yongshi; not daring to trouble Deng Yongshi too much, she deliberately ridiculed Ling Feng a few times to make Deng Yongshi lose face.
In her eyes, Ling Feng was just a teenager; how capable could he be? General Deng must have invited him simply to keep Deng Yongshi company.
Ling Feng gave Deng Yongshi a glance and pursed his lips, saying lightly, "I’m flattered Miss thinks highly of me, but alas, I indeed have no special skills."
At that moment, an elderly man with white at the temples, in his sixties, emerged from the crowd. Li Rong immediately went up to him and respectfully bowed, greeting, "I pay my respects to you, Teacher!"
The elderly man nodded slightly and looked at Ling Feng, saying lightly, "Xiao Rong, has your teacher not taught you to be modest and not to bully others? This young man is likely not a teacher but simply an ordinary retainer."
Upon these words, a wave of laughter swept through the hall.
"Hahaha, he must be a retainer for sure!"
"Look at his silly appearance; he’s probably not a retainer but a servant!"
"You lot!" Deng Yongshi burst out angrily, clenching her fist and shouting at the surrounding gossiping crowd, "Don’t go too far!"
The angrier Deng Yongshi became, the happier Li Rong felt inside. She spoke with a cold sarcasm, "You’re right, Teacher. We really shouldn’t bully a little retainer. I’m so sorry, Mr. Ling—Teacher—!"
She deliberately stressed the word "Teacher" with a biting sarcasm that made her disdain crystal clear.
Other teachers of the younger Deng family members also shook their heads and spoke bluntly, "Young man, the title of ’Teacher’ is not something just anyone can hold. At your young age, what can you teach anyone?"
The crowd looked on with cold eyes and merciless mockery; they all but outright said: "Someone like you better not show your face and embarrass yourself!"
"You!" Filled with righteous indignation, Deng Yongshi instinctively defended Ling Feng, exclaiming, "He is not some retainer; he is a teacher! He is my teacher!"
She didn’t even realize that she, who had always detested Ling Feng and never wanted to acknowledge having such a "Little Teacher," couldn’t stand to see everyone berating him.
In her heart, no one could be a better teacher than Ling Feng, although she had only been with him for three days. Yet, in those three days, she had learned more than she had in the previous decade!
"Stay calm," Ling Feng said, still devoid of any anger, his voice even carrying a hint of satisfaction.
Deng Yongshi had finally recognized her teacher publicly, and the efforts of these past few days had not been in vain.
As for other people, what did it matter to him how they saw things?
However, upon seeing Deng Yongshi puff up with anger, he still stepped forward to grasp her arm, shook his head slightly, then looked at the septuagenarian and said with a faint smile, "Sorry, I hadn’t finished speaking just now."
Lee Rong’s eyelid twitched, giving Ling Feng a somewhat strange look.
But at this point, what could the youngster still say? Even if he blabbered on, wouldn’t he still just be some greenhorn without any credentials!
The septuagenarian also seemed intrigued, squinting at Ling Feng as he said faintly, "Young man, is there something else you wish to say?"
"Indeed, I, Ling Feng, don’t have much ability and am only fortunate to become Miss Deng’s teacher because of General Deng’s misplaced favor. But, it seems that a mere Fifth-rank Alchemist doesn’t have the qualifications to act arrogantly in front of me."
Ling Feng’s voice was very calm, with a hint of laziness, as if Fifth-rank Spirit Pills were, in his eyes, truly nothing more than a fart!
But was that even possible?
"Wow, he’s really blowing his own trumpet now!"
"Goodness, so young and yet so ignorant of the heights of the heavens and the depths of the earth, he actually dares to belittle a Fifth-rank Alchemist!"
"Good lord, has this kid been kicked in the head by a donkey? He dares to say anything!"
"Now this is going to be interesting, Lee Rong’s cousin’s teacher, Master He, is a Fifth-rank Alchemist. This kid is really looking for trouble!"
The surrounding crowd buzzed with discussion. The septuagenarian, or rather Lee Rong’s teacher, He Taichong, also furrowed his brow and swept a cold glance at Ling Feng.
"Young man, ignorant of the immensity of heaven and earth, I’ll allow you to take back what you just said, otherwise, I would really like to see just how capable you are to dare to speak ill of a Fifth-rank Alchemist!"
He Taichong’s eyes filled with anger. As a Senior Expert, offering a few "pointers" to a junior should have been met with obedient listening, but this junior dared to be so insolent and wild; such a disrespectful youngster deserved to be taught a lesson!
Deng Yongshi was also startled by Ling Feng’s tone. What on earth was he saying! Even if it was about fighting for some pride, there was no need to boast like this!
Now, look what happened. Master He had truly become angry!
"Hey, what are you doing! Didn’t I tell you not to speak?" Deng Yongshi pulled at Ling Feng’s sleeve, feeling inwardly anxious.
Ling Feng gave her a faint smile, sending a reassuring look her way before slowly continuing, "If you truly love Alchemy, then you should treat the status of an Alchemist as an honor, not a tool for showing off. Being a Fifth-rank Alchemist is merely a small threshold in the path of Alchemy Dao. To sit at such a level and have such a narrow view of the sky, don’t you find it somewhat laughable?"
"You! You dare to lecture me?" He Taichong’s face turned livid, his beard trembling with anger. As a Fifth-rank Alchemist, wherever he went, he was the subject of much adulation and flattery, yet Ling Feng, this brash youngster, dared to make such audacious remarks!
"Was he wrong in his lecture?"
Just then, a deep and forceful voice came from outside the courtyard, irresistibly magnetic. Everyone couldn’t help but turn their heads to see a figure in a wide robe striding forward.
And beside that elderly figure was none other than another person, none other than General Deng himself!
