What they should fear are illegitimate children and poor business ventures.
Regrettably, Sprewell had both.
He had nine children and was also fond of reckless investments.
The child support for nine children was a huge sum, and worse, most black athletes tend to lose their shirts in business since they often lack business acumen and have nobody to safeguard their interests.
The beginning of their ventures usually involved some uneducated, poor relatives hyping them up, followed by them lifting their bank cards and yelling, “Who else is dreaming?”
Sprewell was no exception, he was coaxed by his own brother into starting a business customizing motorcycles and cars, and he ambitiously expanded nationwide from the get-go.
In theory, he could have hired a financial advisor like Roger to consult.
But deep down, Sprewell refused to let those suited-up white conmen make money off of him.
Previously, Roger found it hard to understand how these multimillionaires could end up bankrupt, but now he found it unsurprising.
Today, he was in Boston for the opening of a new store, so he personally attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
However, frankly speaking, it’s somewhat ridiculous that such a trivial event would even make the sports news—Spree really made it big.
Due to the Heat defeating Roger to advance, though they lost the finals, they still gained tremendous popularity.
All players of the Heat benefited from this.
Roger didn’t care about Spree’s ordeal; he turned off the TV, ready to rest early.
The next day, the Boston Summer League took place at the Clark Sports Center at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
The ten teams participating in this year’s Boston Summer League were the Celtics, Indiana Pacers, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, Washington Wizards, Seattle SuperSonics, Atlanta Hawks, Miami Heat, and the 1999 Germany National Men’s Basketball Team.
Tickets were priced at 8 US Dollars each.
Today’s opening game was a sell-out, and it was also broadcast live on ESPN2.
Of course, most people were there to see Roger.
For 8 dollars, to see Roger in person, lucky fans might even get his autograph; no fan could resist such an offer.
When Roger and Garnett entered, the cheers reached a crescendo.
The two went on to warm up with the players, showing off a few slam dunks to heat up the atmosphere.
Shawn Marion didn’t engage in such grandstanding; he firmly told Roger, “I’ll prove you made the right choice!”
Marion was very grateful to be chosen by the Hawks.
Last season, although his personal stats were impressive, he couldn’t lead his team to the March Madness tournament.
So, Marion’s projected draft spot was only around tenth.
But the Hawks picked him sixth.
Under the new collective bargaining agreement, a higher draft position meant a bigger rookie contract, and Marion was thankful to the Hawks for the opportunity.
That was good, at least Roger didn’t have to worry about taming another rookie.
After pledging his loyalty, Marion then started to seriously practice shooting from various positions.
The moment Garnett saw Marion’s shooting posture, he was dumbfounded.
“Roger, did it have to be him!?”
Roger waved his hand, “Everyone has their merits, although Shawn’s shooting form is ugly, he’s not good-looking either.
Okay, I admit, I’m interested in his defense.”
“I hope your judgment is correct, damn, what a shooting action!”
At that moment, Roger’s old acquaintance Spoelstra came over to greet him, serving as the head coach for the Heat’s summer team, “Free tonight, Roger?
Let’s have dinner, I’ll treat, Kevin, you should join.”
“No problem, Eric.”
“Hey, you actually played great last season.”
“Please, you don’t think I really need comforting, do you?
How’s your learning going at Pat’s?”
“Learned a lot, especially about training.
I think our training was too lax during the Magic period!”
“Well…
seems like you got the essence.
Hey, would you consider being my head coach in the future?”
“It’s hard to say about future things, and I don’t think I’m ready to be a head coach any time soon.”
While they were chatting, a commotion was heard within the gym.
Logically, the biggest stars in the gym were already present.
So, who could cause such a disturbance now?
It was none other than Latrell Sprewell, swaggering in, wearing sunglasses and a heavy gold chain.
“What’s that guy doing here?
Did Reebok invite him?” Garnett was surprised.
“He’s an endorser for Converse, so he probably bought a ticket to get in,” Roger knew Spree was in town for the grand opening of his customization shop in Boston, but didn’t expect him to drop by the Summer League.
Spree, true to his nickname, strutted in with a swagger reminiscent of Conor McGregor, glaring disdainfully at Roger, then went on to shake hands with the Heat players.
He acted as if he were the Roger of the Heat.
“I don’t like him,” Garnett muttered, “That bastard seems to be showing off.”
“We have no right to turn away anyone who comes to genuinely watch the game, Kevin.” Roger was indifferent, today’s game was nationally televised, and it was extremely popular since he was involved.
Even if Spree was there to hog the limelight, Roger could understand.
