He had the team doctor crank the device up to the highest power, because even though it hurt now, it would best alleviate muscle tightness later on.
Pippen was sweating profusely, his expression one of agony, as if undergoing some sort of torture.
Even an old-school coach like Lenny Wilkens couldn’t bear to watch: “Stop, Scott, this won’t cure you!”
“No, I already feel much better, and I’ll be on the court for the fourth quarter.
However, Roger, I can’t recover one hundred percent, I…”
Roger interrupted Pippen: “Just do what you can, leave the rest to me!”
That’s why Pippen was now convinced by the current Roger.
First off, he had come to realize himself; he could never become Michael Jordan.
Secondly, the current Roger was even more persuasive.
A fake leader says, “Do what I can, leave the rest to you.”
A real leader says, “Do what you can, leave the rest to me.”
Pippen’s perseverance further strengthened everyone’s fighting spirit.
So the struggle continued into the second half!
The Jazz had thought the Hawks would be completely worn down after halftime, but they maintained their first-half intensity.
Roger didn’t even rest for a second.
However, the Utah Jazz really wanted to win as well.
Karl Malone’s shooting touch dipped slightly in the third quarter, so he began forcefully charging into the paint.
Even though Big Ben knocked him down brutally time and again, Malone did not stop his advance.
Over time, one problem began to emerge—Big Ben was fouling too much.
By the end of the third quarter, he had already racked up five fouls!
Lenny Wilkens was caught in a dilemma; keeping Big Ben in risked him fouling out.
But without Big Ben, and Pippen out, the Hawks just couldn’t contain that beast.
At the end of the third quarter, the Jazz and Hawks were tied.
Just then, Scottie Pippen came back!
“It’s Scott!
He’s back!
Ladies and gentlemen, this is the NBA Finals, where you never know what will happen next!”
Magic had completely thrown himself into the game, wishing he were a member of the Hawks at that very moment, to feel their passion, that raw passion filled with the stench of sweat and the desire to win!
Amid the cheers of the crowd, Pippen walked up to the bench.
Roger looked up to Pippen, didn’t say much, just nodded and then stuck out his fist.
Pippen didn’t speak either, just fist-bumped Roger.
In 1994, they were enemies of each other.
By 1998, they were the best partners.
As the game restarted, Big Ben was subbed out, Clifford Robinson took to the court.
Robinson was more experienced than Big Ben, but experience isn’t everything.
Clifford Robinson had always been more of an oversized small forward.
Taller than Big Ben but also thinner, standing next to Karl Malone, he seemed like a sliver of bamboo next to a giant gorilla.
This time, with Malone and Stockton’s pick and roll, Robinson covered Stockton for a moment, then quickly returned to Malone.
But as Malone charged full force at the hoop, Clifford Robinson could do nothing but be pushed back, absolutely powerless to resist.
Karl Malone backed down Robinson for a layup, but just as the ball left his hand, Pippen, who rushed to help in the paint, slapped the ball away!
Pippen could now only serve as a purely defensive player, his back was very stiff, greatly affecting his offense.
Roger was right, he could only do what he was able to.
What could he do?
Defense!
He was going to use defense to push Roger and the Hawks to the pinnacle!
In the stands, an old man in a red cap stood up to cheer for Pippen: “Scott’s definitely worth a ten-million-dollar salary, isn’t he!?”
Next to him, General Manager Pete Babcock laughed: “Although having Roger means our salary space is destined to be locked up, whether we extend Scott or not, it will be locked up.
Considering his age and injury situation, a ten million dollar salary actually isn’t cost-effective.”
Ted Turner laughed: “Cost-effective?
That’s something I’ve never cared about in my life.”
Karl Malone was almost going mad.
Just when he thought he had dealt with Pippen, Big Ben put up a staunch defense.
Just when he thought he had dealt with Big Ben, Pippen came back.
The Hawk’s front-line defense was simply a damn nightmare!
Once again, the Jazz missed the chance to take the lead.
But Karl Malone wasn’t discouraged.
After being blocked by Pippen, he sprinted back in full force, catching up to block Stevie Smith’s layup!
The defenses from both teams remained unyielding; the Jazz couldn’t take the lead, and the Hawks had difficulty pulling away the score.
The following game continued on edge.
Roger alone couldn’t keep scoring; although his point stats were impressive, after he hit a mid-range jumper one minute and 45 seconds before the end, claiming his first 40-point game of the Finals.
But Roger’s efficiency was just average, with a shooting percentage of barely 42%.
He scored a lot, largely because his shot attempts also far surpassed those of his teammates; he undertook too much of the offensive burden.
By now, besides Roger, the only other player to score in double digits for the Hawks was Stevie Smith.
On the Jazz side, after Pippen’s return, Karl Malone didn’t completely dominate Clifford Robinson as expected.
Without Big Ben’s defense, Malone’s offense was certainly a bit easier, but he still couldn’t score consecutively.
However, as the game went on, the signs of fatigue from the Hawks became more and more evident.
Roger started missing repeatedly, almost a minute had passed without scoring.
There was no help for it, considering he hadn’t been subbed out for rest today.
