In the end, he could only go one-on-one with Roger, taking advantage of the moment before a double-team formed, Jordan dribbled once and, contending with Roger’s defense, made a mid-range jump shot.
Unfortunately, the basketball didn’t go in.
Jordan might have been magical tonight, but he couldn’t make every shot.
In the following possessions, neither team scored.
The high-intensity defense, fierce confrontations, and mutual shutdown of key players seemed to reincarnate the previous grueling battles characterized by relentless physicality.
But with the Knicks leading by 5 points, they had a cushion to rely on.
However, the New Yorkers’ happiness was short-lived as they soon fell silent again.
In the fourth minute of the fourth quarter, Roger ran out to the left three-point line to catch the ball, Jordan couldn’t keep up in time, giving Roger an open catch.
But when Roger caught the ball, Jordan still managed to close in on him.
Yet Roger, with virtually no space to work with, resolutely chose to jump and take the shot.
Jordan didn’t expect Roger to take such a decisive shot under those circumstances, so his reaction was half a beat slow.
Then, he only heard the sound of the net swishing.
It was another catch-and-shoot mirror image of the previous one, the only difference being, this time it was a three-pointer.
The Magic cut the lead down to just 2 points!
Now, Michael Jordan could no longer suppress Roger too!
Wilkins clenched his fists.
Tonight, it was the New York Knicks that would feel the terror of a superstar!
After scoring, Roger’s gaze turned to his arch-enemy, number 23.
“No matter how you play, I’m with you all the way, Michael.”
“I hope you keep your word.”
Clearly, Roger did keep his word.
Because soon after, he raised his personal score to 34 points.
A mid-range catch-and-shoot from the baseline, and Michael Jordan’s speed began to slow down, no longer able to cut off Harper’s passes to Roger.
Hitting 10 points in half a quarter, Roger had already started a scoring spree.
Jordan could no longer hold down Roger, and looking at Jordan, his touch fluctuated under Roger’s defense in the fourth quarter.
After all, he had been going full throttle for three full quarters.
This wasn’t 1993, this was 1997.
The 34-year-old Michael Jordan was like an old internal combustion engine, which, even at its loudest roar, could be easily crushed by the new force of an electric motor.
“Get lost Michael, do you really want to be killed by me in such a pathetic state?” Roger had a premonition that today he was going to do more than just beat Jordan; he was going to dominate him!
Michael Jordan’s career tail end was going to be more tragic than people anticipated!
Fortunately for the Knicks, Shaq was in foul trouble and couldn’t be too aggressive on defense, which allowed Ewing to score inside, providing some relief and preventing the Knicks from being swept away by Roger’s wave.
Now, the Knicks had no one who could handle Roger.
Larry Johnson was not as agile as Roger, and Chris Childs, being too short, was helpless once Roger had the ball in his hands against him.
So, Michael Jordan had no choice but to stick it out to the end.
He gritted his teeth and chased Roger in an almost frenzied manner.
But Roger, with a mid-range jumper and a drive to the basket, scored 14 points in the quarter, leading his team in a comeback.
Jordan wanted to fight back; the moment he caught the ball beyond the three-point line, he accelerated to break through, but now, neither speed nor body could help him create shooting space in front of Roger.
As he was about to be stopped, in a flash, relying on years of experience and muscle memory, Jordan found the only possibility for this attack.
He took off on the run and then leaned back mid-air to avoid a block.
In the past, he could always make his opponents despair with this move.
But this time, what awaited him was a ruthless block.
Roger closely followed him, jumping with Jordan.
In mid-air, Jordan realized that his explosiveness and hang time were not as they used to be.
Roger swatted the ball right out of his hands as he tried to shoot, and Jordan hurriedly turned to try and catch it, but instead, he ended up knocking the ball out of bounds.
Magic ball possession, Michael Jordan’s face showed disappointment as he struggled in front of Roger.
After landing, seeing the referee give the ball to the Magic, Roger grinned widely and laughed: “You look like a dead dog.”
“Damn, what did you say!?”
“I said you’re like a useless old dog.”
“Son of a bitch!”
Jordan almost got into a scuffle with Roger but was quickly separated by his teammates.
Roger stood in place laughing: “Don’t hold him back, let’s see what he can do, he still has something I left in his eyes!”
Phil Jackson frowned, as Roger intended to strip Jordan of his dignity completely that day!
In the subsequent game, Jordan was in embarrassment.
He could still score, but not efficiently enough to kill the game.
In contrast were Roger’s occasional misfires, but his score kept climbing.
With three minutes left in the game, Roger faced Jordan, broke through after a triple-threat, and drove straight into the paint against Ewing.
Michael Jordan leapt up like a madman, stretching both hands from behind Ewing to grab Roger’s wrist.
Under the rough interference of Jordan and Ewing, Roger flipped backwards, slamming to the floor heavily.
As the referee’s whistle blew, Roger also stood up and stepped to the free-throw line.
Then, he smiled at Ewing and Jordan, as if mocking these two pitiful creatures being pushed to their limits.
The first shot hit the front of the rim but still fell through the net.
The second shot was a swish.
