Chapter 99: Chapter 99: She’s One of Mine, Be Polite
Mrs. Pei?
Everyone was stunned again because this was the first time Pei Liyan himself had acknowledged Qiao Rui as his wife.
And he did it in front of everyone, telling them personally.
It undoubtedly laid down a principle: Qiao Rui is mine, so show some respect.
Even Qiao Rui felt a bit overwhelmed by the honor. This man’s face sure changed quickly.
She really had no idea what this man was up to—there always had to be a demon behind such abnormal behavior.
Yet everything he did seemed so natural, as if he genuinely was looking out for his wife.
Qiao Rui had no choice but to stand up and personally go to help him choose some food.
She picked out a few things for Pei Liyan and, under the watchful eyes of everyone, brought them over to him. "Is that okay?"
Pei Liyan took another look at Qiao Rui’s plate. "Didn’t you eat some food when you arrived? Why are you still so hungry?"
"I have a big appetite!" Qiao Rui sat back down and said to him, "I’m from the countryside, with a big appetite. Is there a problem with that?"
Pei Liyan was somewhat speechless—her being from the countryside was a big deal, huh?
The tone she spoke with always made her seem so domineering.
Pei Liyan said indifferently, "Be careful not to get fat."
"Thanks for your concern, I won’t." She burned a lot of calories; she generally didn’t gain weight.
"Is that so?" Pei Liyan also started eating.
"Born not to get fat," Qiao Rui said. "So Mr. Pei doesn’t need to worry."
"Then you must also be naturally beautiful," Pei Liyan sincerely complimented.
Qiao Rui also said, "Can’t help it. If I were ugly and fat, that would ruin everything."
Pei Liyan was taken aback but couldn’t help breaking into a smile, "You have another advantage."
"What?" Qiao Rui calmly countered.
"You have an interesting soul," Pei Liyan stated.
Qiao Rui: "Mr. Pei is quite interesting too. I thought you were the aloof type, but it turns out you can chat with any type of woman."
Pei Liyan was taken aback, looked at Qiao Rui—why did he feel like her words were a dig at him?
Qiao Rui just lowered her head and continued eating.
Pei Liyan thought maybe he had read too much into it just now; Qiao Rui probably didn’t have any particular meaning behind it.
The two of them, as if no one else existed, each with a plate of food, quietly ate, ignoring everyone else, setting them aside.
The key was, they were still talking, the laughter in Pei Liyan’s eyes so obvious it could not be hidden.
Seeing them like this, everyone had different expressions.
Each face bore a complex expression, watching them, filled with envy, jealousy, and hatred—a mixture of different feelings.
Qiao Xiang’s expression turned even uglier.
She turned away and started drinking.
Fu Yichen whispered, "Xiangxiang, drink less. You have to go to work tomorrow."
"Yo, Yichen is still so caring about my big sister. We wouldn’t believe it if you said you didn’t love us," Qiao Yufei took the opportunity to continue teasing Fu Yichen and Qiao Xiang.
Qiao Xiang didn’t respond to Qiao Yufei at all, only treating Fu Yichen’s words as a wake-up call. There was a lot of sourness in her heart, but she still nodded and gave Fu Yichen a bitter smile.
"Thank you for reminding me. I just joined the company, I really shouldn’t drink."
Seeing her sobering up, Fu Yichen also slightly smiled. "Drink less, so you won’t feel so bad in the morning."
"Mm." Qiao Xiang smiled again.
"My big sister and Brother Yichen are so affectionately concerned about each other, truly making others jealous," Qiao Yufei continued her sarcastic teasing.
Qiao Xiang glanced at her and said, "Is there a problem? He’s unmarried, I’m single, can’t we care about each other? Besides, friends care about each other. Second sister, why do you have to make it sound so sleazy?"
Qiao Yufei suddenly burst into laughter. "Between friends, huh!"
These five words successfully made Qiao Xiang react.
She instinctively looked towards Fu Yichen.
Fu Yichen’s face went pale but he forced himself to calm down, looking at Qiao Xiang with a strained smile. "Yes, as friends, of course we should care about each other."
Qiao Xiang lowered her long eyelashes and smiled, no longer daring to glance at Fu Yichen.
Qiao Yufei smiled, leisurely holding her wine glass as though savoring its beauty.
Pei Liyan and Qiao Rui quietly ate their food. Perhaps because the two looked so appealing while eating, other people were drawn to them as well.
He Zheng went to fetch himself a plate and sat down to eat too.
Qiao Xiang had thought this warmhouse banquet would be a success.
Little did she expect such a resounding failure, leaving herself a subject for ridicule.
What was even more infuriating was that, after having a bit of food, Pei Liyan, not even reaching half-past nine, prepared to leave.
He said, "You all enjoy, Qiao Rui and I will head home first."
Everyone was stunned once more.
Pei Liyan didn’t give anyone the chance to speak.
He headed straight for the door.
Qiao Rui followed suit, and they left Qiao Xiang’s home one after the other.
As the host, Qiao Xiang could only see them to the door, still wearing a smile, though it was visibly stiff.
He Zheng said with a laugh, "It’s only nine o’clock, in such a hurry to get home, huh?"
Pei Liyan threw back, "Yeah, married folk are different from singles."
"Pfft!"
Qiao Rui couldn’t hold back her laughter.
Both Pei Liyan and He Zheng turned to look at Qiao Rui.
She laughed just then because Pei Liyan was lying so smoothly, a testament to his mental fortitude and shamelessly thick skin.
Had she not witnessed it herself, she probably wouldn’t have reacted this way.
He Zheng was taken aback, not expecting Pei Liyan to be such a shameless liar, his gaze filled with questions.
Nonetheless, Pei Liyan didn’t mind her laughter or Qiao Rui’s.
He Zheng whispered, "What about Yichen, just like that?"
Pei Liyan replied softly, "He’s been a brother for many years, no need for explanations."
"You really understand him well."
"Of course."
The two whispered, and Qiao Rui, with her sharp hearing, managed to catch every word despite their low voices.
Pei Liyan then said to He Zheng, "Work on him a bit, it’s better to lay the groundwork."
"Even if you hadn’t said anything, I would still have talked to him," He Zheng winked, "Hurry back now, don’t want to keep your bride waiting."
Pei Liyan snorted lightly.
He Zheng said, "You’ve been distracted all night, couldn’t have been thinking about Ruirui, could you?"
Pei Liyan frowned slightly, remaining silent.
He Zheng in dissolution, "Really?"
Pei Liyan maintained his silence.
He Zheng knew when to stop pushing, but he couldn’t help casting a covert glance at Qiao Rui.
Noticing that Qiao Rui was looking at them, he whispered, "You’re married now, you should show some respect for Qiao Liu."
Pei Liyan’s frown deepened as he murmured, "You’re that concerned about Qiao Liu?"
He Zheng hurriedly explained upon hearing the somber tone, "Don’t get me wrong, I have absolutely no designs on a brother’s wife. I’m just reminding you to handle your complicated marriage and extramarital relations well."
Pei Liyan’s eyes suddenly sharpened.
He Zheng laughed, "Don’t glare at me, your wife is watching."
"You’ve been paying too much attention to Qiao Liu," Pei Liyan said, not even realizing how displeased he sounded.
He Zheng pointed at the goosebumps on his arm, "Look at me, you talking has got me all goosebumps."
Pei Liyan huffed, "Too chatty today."
"I have your best interests at heart," He Zheng said. "Also, I have this premonition. I don’t want you to provoke Qiao Liu, nor do I want you to end up hurting her."
