Chapter 64: Chapter 64 You Look a Bit Like My Wife
Mr. Pei’s brows knit together as a sense of alarm jolted through her—the realization that someone was following them, and she had no idea.
To stalk without a sound, the person must be skilled.
She squinted towards the source of the clapping, where she could make out two tall figures standing in the shadows, vaguely familiar.
"Who’s there? Come out!" Song Muyu yelled angrily.
Pei Liyan and Fang Mo were wrapping up their negotiations, preparing to head back to the hotel for some rest, when they happened upon Qiao Rui and Song Muyu leaving the hotel.
Surprised to see two girls out playing late at night, Pei Liyan didn’t return to the hotel but followed them from a distance.
He later saw them being led by a few punks into this deserted courtyard and witnessed how the girls took the ruffians down, finding the scene thrilling.
Naturally, Pei Liyan generously applauded the girls’ performance.
"Mr. Pei, you’re indeed a man of leisure, to find yourself in such a place late at night," Qiao Rui said coolly.
Pei Liyan walked towards them.
Song Muyu exclaimed in surprise, "Pei Liyan?"
"It is I," Pei Liyan said, a slight smile on his face.
Song Muyu was speechless. "President Pei, have you nothing better to do late at night than to tail people?"
"If Miss Song wishes to see it that way, be my guest," Pei Liyan replied indifferently, having already walked up to them.
Qiao Rui hadn’t expected Pei Liyan to follow; he didn’t seem like someone who meddled in other’s business.
Song Muyu, stumped by his retort, came back with, "Mr. Pei, you enjoy yourself here, Ruirui and I will be leaving."
With that, she grabbed Qiao Rui and started walking away.
Pei Liyan and Fang Mo followed behind slowly, in silence.
Qiao Rui found it amusing.
Once they emerged from the alley, Pei Liyan’s car was still waiting outside.
He glanced at Fang Mo.
Fang Mo immediately said, "Miss Rui, Miss Song, it’s getting late. You should come back with us."
Qiao Rui turned to look at Pei Liyan, who appeared calm and composed.
"No thanks, we’re still going to look around," Qiao Rui replied.
Pei Liyan smiled faintly. "Fine, Miss Rui can continue her stroll."
However, Pei Liyan didn’t leave, instead following Qiao Rui and Song Muyu leisurely.
Song Muyu was utterly exasperated and asked Qiao Rui, "What’s he doing?"
"I have no idea," Qiao Rui was just as perplexed.
"Forget it, let’s go. No point in shopping anymore."
With two deities in tow, shopping was too cumbersome; the mood was gone.
Just then, her phone rang.
Glancing at the call, then at Pei Liyan, Song Muyu said to Qiao Rui, "Wait for me, I need to take this call."
Qiao Rui nodded.
Song Muyu walked a short distance away to answer the phone.
Meanwhile, Qiao Rui wandered around, with Pei Liyan approaching her. He looked at her and spoke, "Miss Rui, did you come to Xinyang for something important?"
Qiao Rui was taken aback, then shook her head. "No, just for a stroll and to buy some Xinyang Maojian tea."
A flicker in Pei Liyan’s eyes, his mind went back to the Xinyang Maojian he had tasted that morning—it was exactly the same as the tea they had with their business partners tonight.
He also couldn’t help but think of the little bumpkin.
Now looking at the girl before him, he saw a resemblance in her silhouette and hair.
For a moment, he half-closed his eyes, slightly dazed.
Qiao Rui, noticing his expression, asked in surprise, "Mr. Pei?"
Pei Liyan snapped back to reality and said, "Sorry, I just spaced out."
Qiao Rui actually cracked a slight smile. "I didn’t expect Mr. Pei to be distracted."
"Why can’t I be?" Pei Liyan asked, smiling in return.
"Oh, what was Mr. Pei thinking about just now?" Qiao Rui tilted her head slightly as she looked at Pei Liyan.
When she looked at him like that, the streetlights bathed her in a soft glow against her white and delicate skin, making her appear both playful and adorable.
Pei Liyan’s gaze unintentionally deepened considerably. "Nothing much, just that seeing you reminded me of my wife!"
Qiao Rui’s heart skipped a beat, and she quickly lowered her eyes to prevent Pei Liyan from seeing her current fluster.
"Is that so? Mr. Pei is married?"
Pei Liyan observed Qiao Rui; her thick lashes hung down, casting faint shadows beneath her eyes, as beautiful as butterfly wings.
He turned his head toward the distant night view and said, "Let’s not talk about that, it’s bound to end sooner or later."
"End?" Qiao Rui frowned.
"Divorce." Pei Liyan didn’t know why he blurted out that word, but he felt like saying it.
Qiao Rui tugged at her lips and said, "If you’re heading for divorce, why get married in the first place?"
Pei Liyan detected the indifference and sharpness in her words, somewhat puzzled. "You seem to be very angry at what I said?"
Qiao Rui raised her gaze to meet Pei Liyan’s, saying sternly, "Should I not be angry?"
"Does this have anything to do with Miss Rui?" Pei Liyan countered.
Qiao Rui snorted coldly, "Of course it does. I just can’t stand Mr. Pei bullying women."
Pei Liyan was stunned for a moment, then laughed. "You’re right to criticize. I indeed did wrong first in this matter.
"The person who should receive an apology is your innocent wife," Qiao Rui said.
Pei Liyan shrugged, "I feel that choosing to marry her was also a way of helping her. Otherwise, when she returned from the countryside to the Qiao Family in Qingcheng, she might have been bullied too."
"So by that logic, you’re a savior, Mr. Pei?" Qiao Rui hadn’t expected Pei Liyan to still be so arrogant.
It was laughable.
Without him, she might have already turned the Qiao Family upside down.
"That’s not quite it. At least I feel that we both fulfilled each other."
"It looks to me like mutual exploitation," Qiao Rui pointed out sharply.
Pei Liyan paused, once again distinctly feeling Qiao Rui’s sharpness and antagonism.
He couldn’t help but take a longer look at her.
He found there was something quite cute about her puffed-up appearance.
He smiled slightly and asked, "Do you have some hostility toward me?"
Qiao Rui’s expression held a trace of discomfort, "You’re thinking too much, Mr. Pei. Why would I have any hostility towards you?"
"You do!" Pei Liyan was so certain.
The man’s voice was deep, magnetic, and those two words were spoken with such certainty that it made Qiao Rui a bit embarrassed.
She had probably been too direct.
Qiao Rui pursed her lips and said in a low voice, "I’m merely voicing injustice on behalf of your wife."
"She might not appreciate your sentiment!"
"I don’t need her to appreciate it." She was just seeking justice for herself.
"Hmm!" Pei Liyan’s gaze seemed thoughtful as he smiled and said, "You’re quite similar to her!"
Qiao Rui was startled again, feeling a bit panicked.
Pei Liyan’s gaze sharpened considerably, suddenly drawing closer to Qiao Rui.
Qiao Rui stiffened, raising her eyes to look at Pei Liyan, forgetting to evade.
With his hands in his pockets, the man stood under the street lamp, his gaze on Qiao Rui sharp and profound, his expression unfathomable, exerting a strong sense of pressure.
This presence, as if he had perceived something, made Qiao Rui feel momentarily intimidated; she forgot to speak for a moment.
As Pei Liyan watched her reaction, he narrowed his eyes slightly, "You, don’t you have anything to say?"
