Chapter 495: Chapter 495: The Perfectly Timed Resolution

"Isn’t it quite unambitious?" Qiao Rui asked a bit bashfully.

Elder Wen snorted lightly, "It is quite unambitious. When I was young, on the battlefield, I was saved by a girl. If I couldn’t control myself like you, I wouldn’t have needed to return to the country."

"You only stirred those girls’ hearts but didn’t feel responsible, right?" Qiao Rui countered.

Elder Wen huffed coldly, "Even if I felt responsible, could I handle it? I’ve been saved by many; do I need to marry them all?"

"So, you didn’t marry any and would rather remain a bachelor than feel guilty towards anyone, right?" Qiao Rui said with a smile.

The old man shot her a glare, "Stop joking about an old man like me, you’re crossing the line."

Qiao Rui immediately straightened up, becoming serious. "Grandpa, I’m serious too; you need someone to take care of you by your side."

"Not fortunate enough for that." Elder Wen seemed to have no interest in personal matters. "Having Old Xie is enough."

"Mr. Xie has an old companion, lots of kids and grandkids. Aren’t you envious of him, being all alone?"

"What is there to envy?" The old man snorted: "His family is happy, that’s why he puts his heart into taking care of me."

Qiao Rui looked awkward, "You’ve really come to terms with it, don’t you really want to find a companion?"

"Stop bringing up useless stuff." The old man said in a deep voice, "Chi Yu, handsome and well-behaved. If you ask me, you should hurry up and divorce Pei Liyan, and consider Chi Yu!"

"Grandpa, as the saying goes, better ruin ten temples than break up a marriage. Do you really want to ruin things between Pei Liyan and me?"

"That’s exactly my thought," Elder Wen said, "I can’t stand him no matter how I see it."

"Then when I’m done with things here, I’ll divorce him, remain single for life, and just take care of you!" Qiao Rui said.

"Who wants you to remain single, taking care of me? I’m not that selfish." Elder Wen looked at Qiao Rui and sighed again, "It’s a waste bringing you up all these years, the husband of my Wen Family’s Young Master is actually a fool."

"A fool?" Qiao Rui couldn’t help but laugh. "Grandpa, he did save my life, after all; even if I don’t marry him, is it appropriate to talk like this about the Wen Family’s savior?"

"Why wouldn’t it be appropriate?" Elder Wen spoke with a serious tone, "Don’t you have a clue how he treats you? If it were Rui Qing or Ruirui instead, where would you stand?"

Qiao Rui was stunned for a moment, then suddenly understood and asked Elder Wen, "Is this why you’re so against me being with him?"

"Isn’t this reason enough?" Elder Wen sternly questioned, "This is a fundamental issue of love; why keep a man who is unfaithful in marriage?"

"Why aren’t you saying anything? You also think there’s a problem, right?"

Qiao Rui shook her head. "Grandpa, if there’s a problem, mine is bigger. I tried to test him by using different identities, and he fell for it."

Elder Wen frowned, "There’s no need to make so many excuses for him. Anyway, I don’t like the guy."

"It’s not you marrying him and spending a lifetime together," Qiao Rui also replied earnestly, "I’m the one with Pei Liyan; I think it’s suitable, so it’s fine."

"Then how should I respond to the Chi Family?" Elder Wen retorted. "I’ve already arranged a marriage with them."

"Grandpa, Chi Yu seems so gentle and reasonable; they would understand, wouldn’t they?"

"You seem quite impressed with Chi Yu."

"Of course, it’s obvious. If you really think it’s not possible, I could just become sworn siblings with him." Qiao Rui pondered, convinced her grandfather was overthinking. "Besides, the Chi Family might even prefer it if the engagement doesn’t proceed!"

"Hmph, let’s go, meet Chi Yu." Elder Wen said, "You should tell him in person that you’re not interested."

"Grandpa, wouldn’t that embarrass him?" Qiao Rui felt such words were disrespectful and inappropriate.

"Then what do you suggest? Tell him you’re interested but can’t decide, so first marry Pei Liyan for a few years, then divorce when you no longer love him, and then be with Chi Yu?" Elder Wen sarcastically countered.

Qiao Rui was speechless. "Grandpa, who talks like that?"

It was clear the old man genuinely hoped for a union with the Chi Family.

But everyone has their own aspirations.

She just couldn’t do it.

"I’ve been very kind already." Elder Wen said, "Years ago, with the things you’ve done, I’d have already taken back the power you hold. How can the Wen Family allow someone who doesn’t follow my orders to command?"

Knowing she was in the wrong, Qiao Rui stood respectfully before the old man, without rebuttal.

"Yes, Grandpa cares for Qiao Rui, and Qiao Rui is deeply grateful."

"You’re rebellious." The old man’s voice lowered.

This was the harshest thing said that night, cutting into Qiao Rui’s heart like a sharp blade, filling her with suffocating loneliness.

She never intended to oppose him.

But the old man’s words deeply saddened her.

She could understand; perhaps he was just too angry to speak so severely.

"Grandpa, I feel so ashamed," Qiao Rui murmured softly, "I’m ashamed you see me this way, feeling I have failed your trust and nurturing."

After speaking, Elder Wen seemed to realize his words were a bit harsh, opened his mouth, and swallowed back what he was about to say.

Qiao Rui also looked at the old man and saw his hesitating expression. She spoke softly, "Grandpa, if you want me to relinquish the Wen Family’s power, I have no objections."

"Shut up." Elder Wen seemed suddenly infuriated, his tone sinking. "Do you think that’s all it takes?"

Qiao Rui pursed her lips. "I fear you’ll be more disappointed."

Elder Wen rarely appeared displeased, observed Qiao Rui again, and finally, with a deep tone, said, "If I could easily replace heirs, do you think I’d have chosen you among all?"

Qiao Rui certainly hadn’t forgotten Elder Wen’s nurturing, "Grandpa, I know, without your guidance, I wouldn’t have anything I have today."

Elder Wen snorted, "That’s a fact. Without me, you’d find it hard to have today’s opportunities. But it’s your hard work and dedication that got you here. A benefactor is but one condition for success."

"Yes!" Qiao Rui respectfully acknowledged, always grateful for his nurturing.

"Don’t give me that submissive look. You never agree to my requests, no matter what," the old man intensely placed his teacup on the table.

Qiao Rui was startled, and just then, there was a "knock, knock" at the door.

This knock inexplicably gave Qiao Rui a sense of relief.

The old man said in a deep voice, "Come in."

The door opened.

At the door stood a man with a half-smile, and he said, "Mr. Wen, the chef has everything ready, shall we move to the dining room?"
