Chapter 493: Chapter 493: He Saved My Life 10 Years Ago

Qiao Rui took a deep breath.

She took a few deep breaths at the door before pushing it open and entering.

In the spacious living room, luxuriously yet subtly decorated, an old man sat on the sofa with a pot of tea on the side table. The tea in the cup was steaming.

The old man appeared quite spirited, with large eyes, still thick hair, and well-defined features. He showed no signs of old age, only the resilience of one who has weathered many storms.

The moment the door opened, his gaze swept over, carrying a strong presence that immediately made one feel pressured.

After closing the door, Qiao Rui respectfully called out, "Grandpa!"

The old man merely glanced at her indifferently, without speaking.

Qiao Rui quickly moved in front of the old man and again respectfully said, "Grandpa, long time no see, how have you been?"

"Not well!" The old man threw out two words, picked up the tea cup, took a sip, and put it down.

"What’s wrong?" Qiao Rui immediately stepped forward, slightly bending over, and lifted the teapot from the table, pouring tea for the old man.

Upon seeing her action, the old man looked at Qiao Rui without any noticeable emotion. "You’ve been living quite comfortably lately."

"Thanks to you, Grandpa, I’m doing okay," Qiao Rui replied obediently.

"Indeed, playing it big, finding some undistinguished man to fly off with, ignoring your own home," Elder Wen said disapprovingly.

"Grandpa, do you think Pei Liyan is undistinguished, or do you find our togetherness annoying?" Qiao Rui stepped back and asked quietly.

Elder Wen glanced at Qiao Rui, "What do you think?"

Qiao Rui pondered for a moment and said, "If you think Pei Liyan is undistinguished and can’t stand him, I believe with more understanding, you’ll gradually grow fond of him."

"And if it’s the latter?" The old man, sensing the main act was yet to come, took a sip of the tea Qiao Rui poured him.

"If it’s the togetherness that’s annoying you, then maybe your love star is rising, and you want to find yourself a companion," Qiao Rui said with a steely nerve.

"Pfft!" The sip of tea Elder Wen had just taken was sprayed out.

Qiao Rui immediately looked around for tissues, spotted a box on the nearby table, grabbed a few, and handed them to the old man.

Elder Wen took them and wiped his mouth.

Qiao Rui cleaned the tea stain on his trousers.

Seeing her so respectful, the old man said, "No respect for elders, do you think I’m someone you can just tease like this?"

"Grandpa, no need to hold back, I just voiced what’s on your mind," Qiao Rui said, standing by, expressionless.

She spoke seriously, causing the old man to glance at her and say, "My thoughts? If you knew my thoughts, you wouldn’t have pulled this stunt on me."

"Sorry, Grandpa," Qiao Rui apologized immediately.

The old man snorted lightly, "Who needs your apology? An apology changes nothing, it’s useless."

"Grandpa, with your status, you shouldn’t use rude language. Watch out, or the reporters might snap and spread it around," Qiao Rui reminded seriously.

"Hmph, what nonsense can they spread? This old man half-buried in yellow earth fears nothing," Elder Wen said in a deep voice, "To be honest, I came out this time to live life differently."

"Indeed, I also think Grandpa should change your way of living. The first half too solitary; in your later years, you should find a wife. While you’re still not too old, maybe even have a child or two," Qiao Rui earnestly suggested.

"Shut up, if you say anything about finding me a wife, I’ll throw you out," Elder Wen wrinkled his brows. "Don’t think talking like this will shift my focus and get you off the hook for the trouble you’ve caused."

Qiao Rui’s heart skipped a beat, oops, discovered.

She had indeed tried to divert the attention, but it hadn’t worked.

Qiao Rui had always known Grandpa Wen’s strength.

She eventually couldn’t hold back laughter.

"Grandpa, I’m wrong, don’t stiffen on me, just scold me thoroughly,"

Elder Wen glared at her. "Stop being coquettish with me; it won’t work. I’m genuinely angry about what you’ve done."

"Grandpa," Qiao Rui called again.

"I said it won’t work."

"Then I’ll find you a wife," Qiao Rui said, "Younger, and have a younger uncle for me."

"Shut your mouth!" Elder Wen glared at her, "How dare you joke at a time like this."

"It’s not a joke," Qiao Rui became serious, speaking solemnly, "Grandpa, I know you don’t like me mentioning this, but you can’t not marry either. Finding someone compatible might enrich your later life even more."

"Did you see that young man outside?" Elder Wen, knowing that whatever he said, Qiao Rui might not be persuaded, decided to stick to his point.

You speak east, I talk west.

Qiao Rui said, "Hmm, Mr. Chi, right?"

"Yes," Elder Wen said, "He’s the owner of Rose Manor, the eldest son of the Chi Family in Beijing, Chi Yu. He happens to be the candidate I selected as your future husband. Yet before I could say a word, you married yourself off privately. Would I harm you?"

"Grandpa!" Qiao Rui shook her head, "I didn’t mean that. Mr. Chi is wonderful; I had a very good first impression and found him very amiable. But my affection isn’t for anyone else."

"Not for anyone else, meaning it’s on that Pei family boy?" Elder Wen questioned.

Qiao Rui pursed her lips, not speaking, which was as good as an admission.

Elder Wen knitted his brows, "What is so special about that Pei family boy? Why must it be him?"

"Grandpa, stop asking," Qiao Rui shook her head, "I can agree to anything you ask, except this one matter where I can’t follow your wish."

Elder Wen still couldn’t comprehend, "Why exactly? It’s better if you just tell me directly."

Qiao Rui thought seriously and said, "Grandpa, ten years ago, he saved my life."

Elder Wen was taken aback, a bit surprised.

Qiao Rui bitterly smiled, "Perhaps it was at that moment that the seed of affection was planted. Even though I know he has many imperfections, I’ve accepted it. Moreover, the more I got to know him, the more I found him just right for me because I too have many flaws."

"Nonsense," Elder Wen immediately objected when Qiao Rui mentioned her flaws, "You’re an excellent talent groomed by Grandpa, the Young Master of the Wen Family. Who dares to say you’re not outstanding?"

"Grandpa, you’re just like the old woman boasting about her own melons,"

"So what? Even if Grandpa sold melons, they would be the sweetest!" Elder Wen snorted, "How did he save your life?"
