Chapter 409: Chapter 409: I can’t bear to hand you over
Then, Liang Jinqian and his assistant walked over to the balcony.
Si Ran quickly picked up the phone on the platform, put it in her pocket, and slid down quickly. However, halfway down, her clothes got snagged and tore a big hole.
Si Ran was very annoyed, but she couldn’t worry about that now. She could only descend quickly and cover herself up first.
Up on the balcony, Liang Jinqian’s assistant said, "Sir, it seems like someone was eavesdropping on our conversation outside, but we can’t see anyone now. They must have slipped away. Our conversation might have been overheard by someone."
Liang Jinqian’s expression darkened, a sharp glint flashed in his eyes, and he said coldly, "Immediately send someone to investigate who was outside. Make sure to catch them for me."
Si Ran couldn’t think too much, so she climbed into the balcony on the third floor.
Unexpectedly, as soon as she got in, she heard a familiar and teasing voice: "Si Ran, what are you doing here? Is this a surprise for me?"
Si Ran was stunned and looked up in shock at the person. Upon realizing it was He Zheng, she immediately lunged forward, covering his mouth with her hand, and whispered, "Shh, don’t speak!"
He Zheng blinked at her, wrapped his arms around her, and pulled her inside.
It was the first time he’d seen such an animated expression from Si Ran, wide-eyed and open-mouthed, pretty adorable.
He caught on to the essence, chuckled, and half-held her as he left the balcony.
Inside the private room, He Zheng then whispered, "What are you doing here?"
"Someone might come looking for me soon," Si Ran said in a low voice. "Cover for me."
"Cover for you?" He Zheng raised an eyebrow. "Why should I cover for you?"
Si Ran froze, staring blankly at He Zheng, who still wore that infuriatingly smug expression.
"Then don’t cover for me. When someone comes in to catch me later, you can hand me over. Maybe you can even make some money out of it."
He Zheng burst into laughter. "I can’t bear to hand you over."
Si Ran frowned and glared at him sharply. This man just never seemed to be serious.
Seeing her glaring at him, He Zheng laughed again, "You little girl, keeping everything to yourself and sulking here, eh?"
"President He, why are you here?" Si Ran asked, puzzled, seeing that He Zheng was the only one in the private room.
"The person I was meeting hasn’t arrived yet. Who would have thought that while I was smoking on the balcony, Si Sister would drop down from the sky?" He Zheng said with a grin, looking at Si Ran.
He couldn’t fathom why this girl was always so serious, especially when she saw him, always with a cold face, often glaring at him.
Si Ran was not used to his playful demeanor, unsure if what he said was true.
Not wanting to argue with him, she turned to leave for the door.
He Zheng’s gaze was glued to her back and he immediately noticed the rip in Si Ran’s blouse, exposing her fair shoulder and the strap underneath.
He Zheng’s eyes deepened, and without saying a word, he removed his suit jacket and walked over.
Si Ran was checking the situation outside at the door, ready to make a getaway at any moment.
Suddenly, she felt warmth on her body; a jacket with body heat was draped over her.
She paused, suddenly realizing something. "Is my clothing torn?" she asked.
He Zheng looked down at her. "It seems you know your clothing is torn. What happened?"
"I followed someone here and discovered some things, but I won’t tell President He exactly what those things are," Si Ran said, always adhering to her professional ethics.
Even though she knew that perhaps these matters could be shared with Pei Liyan, she was very clear as his secretary that such things should never be spoken from her mouth.
It’s the basic ethics as a secretary.
Confidentiality and accountability to the president are necessary.
"Oh, so you were tracking someone." He Zheng snorted. "I thought it was something else!"
Si Ran felt a strange flutter from the warmth of his clothes but didn’t respond, pressing her lips together silently.
He Zheng continued, "Why would Liyan let you do something dangerous like this? You’re a girl, and you climbed buildings? Do you not value your life?"
Si Ran shook her head. "The president didn’t ask me to do it; circumstances required it."
"What kind of circumstances require that?" He Zheng was dismissive, still angry. "If circumstances required it, would you become a man if needed?"
Si Ran looked at him speechlessly. "It’s not like what you think."
"Then what do you think I am thinking?" He Zheng retorted.
Si Ran was taken aback, realizing she might have said too much to him.
These words were not necessary or appropriate to say to him.
"President He, is my clothing okay?" Si Ran changed the subject, ready to leave.
He Zheng frowned when he saw her trying to return the jacket. "Your shirt is badly torn, exposing your undergarments and your white skin, the kind that can turn any man into a lecher at first sight."
Si Ran gasped, her face turning crimson in an instant.
He Zheng watched her change color, his deep eyes locking onto her flushed face. "I only glanced once and felt tempted, so I gave you my jacket, or else I’d make a mistake."
She knew he was teasing, yet Si Ran was still somewhat annoyed, uncertain of the extent of the damage to her shirt.
But judging from the ripping sound earlier, it seemed pretty severe.
For a moment, Si Ran was stuck in a dilemma, not knowing whether to return the jacket or not.
Seeing her conflicted expression, He Zheng smiled and said, "You should wear my clothes. It’s safer that way; if you get seen outside, you won’t be in a tight spot."
"What do you mean by tight spot?" Si Ran retorted irritably.
"Of course, your body being seen by others isn’t good. Just let me be the only one to admire it," He Zheng said seriously.
Si Ran’s face turned even redder, finding his words somewhat infuriating.
He always caught her off guard, yet he appeared unfazed.
You couldn’t tell which of his words were true or false; this made him aggravating.
Just then, there was a knock at the door.
Si Ran jumped in surprise, looking up in shock, her blush forgotten.
Seeing her like this, He Zheng’s eyes deepened, and he pulled her into his embrace, whispering, "Don’t be afraid, I’m here."
Si Ran froze, the man’s unique scent mingling warmly, inexplicably comforting her.
She was momentarily dumbfounded and whispered, "It might be Liang Jinqian’s people."
"Liang Jinqian?" He Zheng was taken aback. "How could it be him?"
Si Ran said nothing, unsure of what to say.
He Zheng lowered his gaze to her, speaking softly, "Don’t worry, as long as I’m here, no one will touch you today."
