Chapter 38: Chapter 38 Raising an Army to Inquire About Faults
Qiao Rui felt that Pei Liyan was doing it on purpose.
He pushed the responsibility onto her, just wanting to see her embarrass herself in front of the Qiao Family.
If the Elder knew it was her who had said to not let Pei Liyan finance the Qiao Family, he would have been furious enough to kill her.
He just wanted to see her unlucky, to appease his unbalanced heart from having married her, an ugly girl.
Indeed, Pei Liyan was not a good person.
But on second thought, Qiao Rui also felt that since she had said it, it was reasonable for others to take her words and use them against her.
He had to find a reason, otherwise, wouldn’t he be the one who offended others.
Seemingly, that wouldn’t benefit him either.
That he had come over to discuss with her already was quite rare.
She hadn’t expected him to treat her well anyway.
Seeing the changes in Qiao Rui’s expression, from initial astonishment, anger, reluctance, to eventual resignation, slowly calming down.
It seemed like she had figured everything out.
Pei Liyan spoke indifferently, "So let’s just say it was you who refused."
What else could Qiao Rui say?
She now thoroughly understood that she was just a sandwich cookie.
A tool the Qiao Family could use but also the Qiao Family’s scapegoat.
And on Pei Liyan’s side, she was a shield.
Having understood this, Qiao Rui felt very calm.
"Whatever you say."
He silently watched Qiao Rui for a long while.
"If there’s nothing else, may I close the door?" Qiao Rui asked again.
Pei Liyan’s voice was faint, "Yes, I must thank you for being willing to be this shield."
Qiao Rui looked at him, irony behind her glasses.
This man took cheap shots.
"Mr. Pei is too courteous. I should be the one thanking you for giving me the chance to be a shield."
The man squinted his eyes, seemingly understanding the girl’s irony through the glasses. "You tell the Elder that you pushed this matter away, and I can reward you with half a million as pocket money."
Half a billion and half a million.
The irony of it.
"No need, Mr. Pei. Keep the money for your old age," Qiao Rui said, "I’d be afraid to make you spend in pain after rewarding me."
After saying this, she slightly curled her lips and closed the door.
Pei Liyan frowned tightly watching the girl, the ironic statement she made right before closing the door.
Not even ten minutes after closing the door,
Qiao Rui received a call from Elder Qiao.
The Elder directly vented his anger on Qiao Rui.
"I heard you blocked Pei Liyan’s financial support to the Qiao Family, did you?"
Qiao Rui knew immediately that Pei Liyan had gone back to his room and called the elder pushing this issue.
So the Elder called late at night to complain and inquire.
Qiao Rui listened, not bothering to argue with the Elder, not really taking it to heart.
"Elder, if Pei Liyan says so, let it be so."
"What do you mean if Pei Liyan says so? I just want to know if you were the one who stopped it."
Qiao Rui spoke calmly, "Elder, if I were just a shield, would what I say count for anything? Would there still be a need for me to marry Pei Liyan?"
With that statement, Qiao Rui silenced the Elder.
He fell silent on the phone.
Qiao Rui quietly waited, not rushing to speak.
After a long pause, Elder Qiao finally spoke, "Qiao Rui, remember this, you are a part of the Qiao Family, both in the past and now, you are a member of the Qiao Family, and you must partake in our shared honor and disgrace."
Qiao Rui found it amusing. She had never been part of the Qiao Family’s past glory, nor was she involved in its decline.
Now, listening to her grandfather recount these events seemed quite ironic to her.
But she did not object.
"You can’t just be a bystander, as a child of the Qiao Family, it won’t help you if the family goes bankrupt," Elder Qiao said solemnly.
"I understand, Grandpa," Qiao Rui replied.
Hearing that she did not retort, Elder Qiao’s tone softened slightly, yet he still tried to persuade Qiao Rui to approach Pei Liyan for help.
"The Qiao Family now needs some capital to turn things around. This project is tied to our honor and disgrace. Go talk to Pei Liyan again, make sure he provides us with five hundred million in funding. Moreover, if this project succeeds, it will benefit the Pei Family as well."
"Grandpa, Mr. Pei is not someone easily persuaded," Qiao Rui said quietly, yet her tone was resolute—she couldn’t help.
"You go and try, Grandpa believes in you, you will definitely succeed," Elder Qiao insisted.
Qiao Rui felt that Elder Qiao was really demanding the impossible. If there were truly benefits for the Pei Family, Pei Liyan wouldn’t neglect a profitable business.
He had refused financial support, believing that the project did not hold promise in Pei Liyan’s eyes.
Elder Qiao’s words seemed a bit delusional.
Presumably, the gradual decline of the Qiao Family was also due to Elder Qiao’s lack of foresight.
After hanging up the phone, Qiao Rui locked the door and went to wash up.
She removed the facial mask from her face, did another mask, fully hydrated her skin, and then put her "face" back on before lying down on her bed to sleep.
The next morning,
as she went downstairs, she noticed Pei Liyan sitting on the living room sofa, looking at a tablet.
Mrs. Feng was already preparing breakfast.
The mansion was extremely quiet.
Descending the stairs, Pei Liyan happened to look up and saw her, his brow furrowing at the sight of her plain face behind those ugly, robust glasses.
His eyes drifted downward, landing on her oversized clothes that hid her figure completely, even obscuring her one redeeming feature—a good figure.
All in all, she looked exceptionally countrified.
"Good morning, Mr. Pei," Qiao Rui greeted first.
"Morning," Pei Liyan nodded slightly.
He sat on the sofa, leisurely waiting for Qiao Rui to ask him for help.
He had rejected Elder Qiao on the phone the previous night, guessing that Elder Qiao would definitely have Qiao Rui approach him.
But, during breakfast, Qiao Rui ate quietly without even mentioning the matter.
This surprised Pei Liyan quite a bit.
He couldn’t help but take another look at Qiao Rui.
The girl held her chopsticks, her long fingers were slender and attractive.
She kept her eyes down, quietly eating without a word.
It didn’t seem like she intended to ask for his help at all.
Pei Liyan glanced at her subtly a few times, looking at her downcast demeanor, his brow furrowed.
He was curious to see when Qiao Rui would finally speak up.
Qiao Rui was not unaware of the man’s piercing gaze, always falling on her, sizing her up repeatedly.
Feeling somewhat embarrassed, she pretended not to notice and continued eating.
Unexpectedly, Pei Liyan directly spoke up. "Did your grandfather contact you?"
Qiao Rui paused, forced to meet his gaze.
He looked at her, his eyes sharp on her face.
Qiao Rui had no choice but to respond, "He did."
"Is he making it difficult for you?"
"No," Qiao Rui said.
"Actually, if your grandfather is making it difficult for you, you can tell me."
Qiao Rui smiled faintly and countered, "And then let you have a laugh?"
