Chapter 344: Chapter 344: Mysterious Origin

Qiao Rui ran out from inside, her pace neither too fast nor too slow, ensuring she didn’t fall too far behind them while also avoiding giving away that she had noticed them.

After running outside, she didn’t hail a cab at the main entrance but instead continued jogging along the street corner.

At the edge of a flowerbed near a tall landscaping tree, Qiao Rui pressed herself silently against it.

The pursuers caught up, and she swiftly sidestepped into view, staring at them coldly. "Who are you? Why are you following me?"

The two of them were startled and looked at her. "Hah, so what if we’re following you?"

They hesitated for a moment but immediately gave her that sleazy look, deliberately putting on a vulgar face.

"Hey girl, you look great. Why not come with us and have some fun?"

"Hah, playing the thug act, are you?" Qiao Rui chuckled. "Your acting skills suck. Go back and learn how to perform properly."

The two men froze again, seemingly annoyed.

They stared at Qiao Rui, suddenly adopting a more aggressive stance. "So what if we’re following you?"

"If you follow me, you’ll get beaten up." Qiao Rui didn’t want to waste any more words. The deserted streets at night were perfect for dealing with these two and interrogating them for details.

She had just surveyed the area—there weren’t any surveillance cameras nearby, giving her the freedom to act.

When the two heard her words, they seemed slightly apprehensive but insisted, "We know you’ve got some moves, but we’re no pushovers either. Let’s take you on together."

With that, the pair took a fighting stance, preparing to confront her.

Qiao Rui guessed these two weren’t sent by Pei Liyan to tail her.

If they were, they wouldn’t actually try to fight her.

But now, not only were they fighting her, but they even knew she was skilled.

Regardless, she decided to take them down first before worrying about anything else.

Without another word, Qiao Rui launched herself at them.

Her movements were swift and nimble, graceful yet agile. She raised a leg and aimed directly at her opponent’s vulnerable spot.

The man dodged, but Qiao Rui quickly pivoted, grounding herself on her toes, retracting her kick, then leaping into an elegant spinning kick that struck the man’s jaw. A sickening crack followed immediately.

Qiao Rui landed both feet firmly, not pausing for even a moment. She followed up with another kick that sent the man, whose jaw had just been dislocated, sprawling onto the ground.

The other man was startled and hesitated briefly, but Qiao Rui didn’t give him any chance. She seized the moment of his fear and hesitation to attack swiftly, taking him down with precision.

She planted her foot firmly on one man’s chest and stared down at them, her piercing gaze sweeping across their faces.

"Who sent you?" she demanded.

The two men hesitated, clearly unwilling to speak.

"If you don’t talk, I’ll make sure you wish you were dead," Qiao Rui said darkly.

"What, you’re going to kill us?" one of them sneered, attempting to get up.

Qiao Rui suddenly stomped on the chest of the man beneath her, eliciting a loud crack—the sound of ribs breaking.

"Ah!" The man screamed in agony.

Qiao Rui followed up with a clean side kick, reliably brutal, flipping the other man back onto the ground.

In under two minutes, the two men were beaten into a pathetic state, their faces pale with a mix of pain and fear.

Qiao Rui moved efficiently and relentlessly, not allowing them any opportunity to bargain.

Their inability to defend themselves, coupled with the pain and terror, turned their expressions to shock.

"Are you going to talk?" Qiao Rui asked thoughtfully, looking at the two.

Both men stayed quiet.

Qiao Rui crouched down suddenly.

The man whose ribs she had broken flinched in fear, his forehead soaked in sweat from the agony, his eyes filled with terror.

Qiao Rui smiled slightly at him. "Still not talking?"

The man pressed his lips together, swallowing hard.

Qiao Rui didn’t want to waste any more time. She reached into his clothing and rummaged through his pockets.

She pulled out his phone, and the man immediately reached out to snatch it back, but Qiao Rui stood up and began browsing through it.

Sure enough, she found the number he contacted most frequently.

Narrowing her eyes, she felt this number looked familiar.

She seemed to have seen it somewhere before.

So, without hesitation, Qiao Rui dialed the number.

On the other end of the line, a deep male voice answered.

"Any progress? Did you find out about Ruirui’s background?"

Qiao Rui froze for a second, her eyebrows furrowed. In a low voice, she addressed the phone, "Mr. Liang, so you’re the one investigating me?"

"Who are you?" The voice at the other end seemed momentarily flustered but quickly recovered, letting out a light chuckle. "If I’m not mistaken, you must be Ruirui, right?"

"And what if I am?" Qiao Rui replied indifferently.

"Hah, recognizing my voice, Miss Rui, we must be acquainted then?"

Mild tension welled up within Qiao Rui, but she responded calmly, "Mr. Liang, your voice is iconic. With so many original voiceovers in the cinema, who wouldn’t recognize you? It’s very distinctive."

"Oh, is that right?" The man chuckled, his tone dripping with suspicion.

Qiao Rui wasn’t sure why Liang Jinqian was investigating her—it didn’t quite make sense.

Though they had worked together, their scenes together were minimal. They weren’t particularly close, merely passing acquaintances. Yet this man had now appeared, investigating her.

Qiao Rui couldn’t understand his motives.

"Mr. Liang, forgive me for this, but your men got injured by me. Are you planning to call the police or handle this privately?"

"Miss Rui, let’s handle this privately," Liang Jinqian chuckled lightly. "You know my status makes it inconvenient for me to show up in public, and since your background isn’t exactly clear, I imagine you wouldn’t want publicity either."

Background unclear?

He actually dared to comment about her like this.

It seemed he must have some intel, but why?

Qiao Rui smiled faintly. "I think I’d rather call the police."

"Don’t." Liang Jinqian chuckled lightly. "I apologize. How about this—we meet face-to-face to discuss it, okay?"

"Now?" Qiao Rui asked, slightly surprised.

"If it’s inconvenient late at night, we can do it tomorrow." Liang Jinqian smiled cordially, appearing reasonable.

Qiao Rui replied, "I’m busy lately. Let’s do it this way—since you don’t want me to call the police and seem sincere about meeting, make it tomorrow at noon."

"How about the rooftop of Qingcheng Hotel?" Liang Jinqian suggested.

"I’ll choose the location," Qiao Rui said.

"Haha." Liang Jinqian laughed. "Miss Rui, there’s no need to be so guarded. I’ll arrange the venue, mainly because my status makes me cautious, and I’m also wary of paparazzi taking pictures."

Qiao Rui grinned faintly. "If that’s your concern, then perhaps we shouldn’t meet at all."

She showed no intention of indulging him.

Liang Jinqian didn’t seem bothered, chuckling slightly. "It seems Miss Rui won’t offer Mr. Liang much face, huh?"

"Correct," Qiao Rui said bluntly. "Take it or leave it."

"Haha, alright, we’ll meet," Liang Jinqian laughed heartily. "If reporters catch us, I’ll simply say Miss Rui is my girlfriend."

Qiao Rui: "......"

"It’s settled then. Call me tomorrow at noon," Liang Jinqian chuckled. "Oh, and my men, could you kindly call 120 for them? My assistant will handle the hospital bill."

"They’re not dead yet. Let them call it themselves." With that, Qiao Rui hung up.

She glanced at Liang Jinqian’s phone again before returning it to the man. "Sorry, bud. If you’d been more cooperative earlier, you wouldn’t have had to suffer like this. But, I don’t appreciate being tailed. Better steer clear of me in the future, understood?"

The two men nodded frantically, visibly intimidated.

Qiao Rui cast them one last glance, turned, and disappeared into the night.
