Chapter 23: Chapter 23 Fifty Pounds of Meat
Elder Qiao received a call from Elder Qiao. "Come to the Qiao family immediately."
"Now?" Qiao Rui asked.
"Yes, right now. The driver will pick you up," Elder Qiao said and then hung up.
Qiao Rui did not know what her grandfather wanted her for, but she still gathered her things to head back to the Qiao family.
She took some cash, left the house, and just happened to see the Qiao family driver waiting at the doorway.
As soon as the driver saw her, he came up to her: "Miss Six, the elder has sent me to pick you up."
"I know." Qiao Rui’s voice was indifferent: "Grandfather already called me."
She opened the car door directly and got in.
Halfway through the trip, Qiao Rui saw a market and said, "Master, please stop at that market over there, and buy me fifty kilograms of pork."
The driver was taken aback and asked, "Miss Six, what do you need so much pork for?"
Qiao Rui’s gaze was calm: "You don’t need to worry about it, just buy it for me."
She took out a stack of money and handed it to the driver.
Although the driver was full of doubts, he still obeyed Qiao Rui’s orders and took the money to buy the pork.
When getting out of the car, Qiao Rui gave him another instruction: "If it’s too heavy, let the butcher deliver it, and it’s best to buy some ribs as well."
"Yes!"
Soon, the driver returned with the meat, a full fifty kilograms, packed in several red plastic bags.
The butcher personally delivered it to the trunk.
After the driver loaded the meat, he returned the remaining money to Qiao Rui.
Qiao Rui declined to take it, telling him, "No need, keep the rest for yourself, consider it a tip for your help."
The driver was surprised by Qiao Rui’s gesture, giving an astonished glance at this unassuming Miss Six, who, despite coming from the countryside, was quite generous.
He could hardly believe that Miss Six would give him a tip and eagerly said: "Thank you, Miss Six."
"No need to thank me."
Ten minutes later, they arrived at the Qiao family home.
Qiao Rui arranged for the driver to bring the fifty kilograms of meat and ribs directly into the Qiao family’s hall.
The butler and the servants exchanged looks, not understanding what Miss Six was up to, all of them curious.
Qiao Rui entered the hall and, looking around at everyone, said, "Today, I’m treating you all to meat. I’ve heard the Qiao family is quite poor and hasn’t had meat for a long time, so I bought fifty kilograms. I hope the kitchen can prepare it."
At this moment, Elder Qiao was not in the living room; he was on the staircase and happened to hear this statement.
Elder Qiao immediately became furious: "Qiao Rui, what are you doing?"
"Grandfather!" Qiao Rui glanced at Elder Qiao on the stairs and said calmly: "Oh, I was worried the family couldn’t afford to buy meat, so I bought some for you to eat. Although you can’t eat too much greasy food at your age, not eating any meat isn’t good for your health either. Consider it my way of showing respect to you, and I also want everyone else to improve their diet."
Hearing Qiao Rui’s explanation, Elder Qiao’s old face instantly contorted with a certain twist: "Nonsense."
Qiao Rui’s expression remained nonchalant as she looked at her grandfather: "Grandfather, are you so angry because you begrudge the servants their meal? It’s okay, don’t feel bad about it. If you really want to eat, I can buy more for you later."
She spoke with an indifferent expression, naively, like a child innocent of worldly ways.
Elder Qiao recalled how she had grown up in the countryside, had become wild over the years with no one to discipline her, and probably lacked some manners, which explained her directness.
Elder Qiao took a deep breath, calmed his emotions, and tried hard not to lose his temper.
"When did I ever say the Qiao family was so poor we couldn’t afford to eat meat?" Elder Qiao countered.
"Yesterday," Qiao Rui replied: "Last night, when I asked you for a piece of meat, it was such a struggle."
She stated this very frankly.
Elder Qiao almost passed out right there.
Seeing this, the butler hurriedly stepped forward to explain, "Miss Number Six, you’ve misunderstood. It’s not that our family can’t afford meat, but rather Elder Qiao is of an age where he isn’t supposed to eat too much of it."
Qiao Rui nodded, waved her hand, and spoke with great generosity, "I know, there’s no need for Uncle Butler to explain, being poor is just being poor, trying to cover it up is even more awkward."
"Qiao Rui, shut your mouth!" Elder Qiao couldn’t hold back and yelled.
This girl was born to torment him, capable of angering him to death.
Qiao Rui looked at Elder Qiao with skepticism, just about to speak when Elder Qiao had already instructed the butler, "Hurry up and take the meat to the kitchen to be cooked for everyone, let Qiao Rui have her fill."
"Yes!" the butler immediately commanded Zhang Ma and others, "Take it quickly to the kitchen."
"Yes!" Before long, all the meat was carried away, and the servants were whispering among themselves.
"Who would’ve thought Miss Number Six was so generous, buying so much meat all at once. We’ve never had this much even during the Qiao Family’s celebrations."
"Indeed, it’s also my first time seeing so much meat at home. Last time I saw this much meat was at the supermarket or the vegetable market."
The servants were full of praise for Miss Number Six’s generosity.
A single meat-buying incident had made Qiao Rui quite popular in the Qiao Family.
At this moment, in the living room.
Qiao Rui looked toward Elder Qiao and asked, "Grandpa, did you call me back for something important?"
Elder Qiao glanced at her, his face full of displeasure, but still began, "Last night, did Pei Liyan stay with you?"
Qiao Rui was taken aback, she hadn’t expected Grandpa to inquire about such matters.
So he called her back just to ask if she had consummated her marriage with Pei Liyan?
She glanced at Elder Qiao and honestly replied, "No, we slept separately."
Hearing this, Elder Qiao’s eyes flickered with a complex mix of emotions.
It seemed there was disappointment, concern, and a bit of relief.
A variety of emotions intertwined.
Qiao Rui caught on to this.
She roughly knew what was behind Elder Qiao’s emotional cocktail.
"And, did Pei Liyan say anything to you?"
"No," Qiao Rui replied, "Oh, he did give me money to spend, an allowance of three hundred thousand a month."
Elder Qiao’s eyes brightened, then appeared somewhat disappointed, lamenting, "You’re satisfied with just three hundred thousand?"
"Satisfied!" Qiao Rui exclaimed. "I’ve never seen so much money before. Suddenly I feel so rich, why wouldn’t I be satisfied?"
Elder Qiao stood bewildered.
He gritted his teeth, "Qiao Rui, are you really foolish?"
Qiao Rui looked at Elder Qiao and asked, "Grandpa, do you think I’m foolish?"
Elder Qiao closed his eyes for a moment. "You should be trying to hold onto Pei Liyan. If you hold onto him, then you can be happy!"
"I can be happy without holding onto him," Qiao Rui replied. "Holding onto him would be so tiring and bothersome. Grandpa, aren’t you the silly one?"
Elder Qiao leaned back, relying on the support of the sofa, to prevent himself from passing out in frustration.
Qiao Rui’s eyes were calm, her gaze steady, but beneath the surface lay a barely perceptible hint of mocking irony.
Elder Qiao was afraid of what might be between her and Pei Liyan, but also afraid of what might not be.
If there was something, it might affect Qiao Xiang’s future relationship with Pei Liyan. If there was nothing, it could impact the entire Qiao Family’s interests.
