Chapter 211: Chapter 211: The Impulse is Real

As soon as she hung up the phone, Qiao Rui also saw Pei Liyan at the same time.

He was on the other side of the corridor, on this side’s long corridor, which was very winding, with many turns, but complex and intricate, and she could see him from afar.

They weren’t far apart, but to walk over, one had to take a detour.

The man saw her from a distance, she had just been on the phone.

Pei Liyan walked over quickly.

And in the blink of an eye, he was right in front of her.

"Didn’t you say Si Ran should come downstairs with us, why did you come out alone?" Pei Liyan asked with pointed meaning.

Qiao Rui met his eyes, only to feel that in this landscape of water and sky, among the pavilions and winding corridors, the man appeared even more outstanding.

She smiled faintly and said, "Si Ran and Fang Mo act as your personal secretaries, which is quite hard, always having to be on call. It’s natural for them to take care of you, but taking care of me is extra work, so today I sympathized with them and let Si Ran take a break!"

"You’re not being good," Pei Liyan gazed at her, his tone thick with implication.

Qiao Rui blinked, still smiling, and retorted, "You just said I was very good!"

"You know what I mean." Pei Liyan didn’t directly expose that her running out without calling Si Ran was because she wanted to make a phone call, and had specifically chosen a place with less surveillance, likely on purpose.

He found his little darling wife quite mysterious.

Qiao Rui sighed, "If I say I don’t understand, you’d definitely accuse me of being contentious and singing the opposite tune, right?"

"Aren’t you?" Pei Liyan countered.

Qiao Rui laughed, "I’m so well-behaved, you’ve said it yourself several times."

Pei Liyan snorted lightly, very mockingly.

Qiao Rui didn’t care about his sarcastic tone and quickly changed the subject, "Didn’t Song Xun say you had something very important to tell me? How come you finished saying it so quickly?"

"Are you trying to change the subject?" the man asked blandly and his sharp eyes had already seen through everything.

Qiao Rui’s heart skipped a beat, somewhat alarmed; this man was really too shrewd, with full penetrating insight.

"Why is it so hard to talk to you about anything?" Qiao Rui turned her gaze toward the water in front of her.

This was an artificial pond, filled with lotus roots, where large patches of lotus leaves were very soothing to the eye. The light pink lotus flowers competed to bloom, looking very delicate.

Pei Liyan seemed not to let her off the hook, directly asking, "Were you just on the phone with a friend?"

Qiao Rui didn’t even make a pretense, her gaze looking into the distance, "Do I look like someone who doesn’t have any friends?"

"I am a bit curious though, when are you going to take me to meet your friends?" Pei Liyan asked again.

It was then that Qiao Rui turned her head to look into his eyes and said, "You’d have to go to the village for that, where there’s only dry toilets, oh, and bathing is quite inconvenient."

Pei Liyan met her gaze, his eyes darkening somewhat. "It’s okay, what you can do, I should be able to do too."

Qiao Rui was startled. She thought that saying so would put off the man, but it seemed not.

For a moment she was taken aback—if she took him to the countryside, wouldn’t she be left without any privacy at all?

She couldn’t take him there yet.

Seeing her in a daze, Pei Liyan frowned subtly and spoke in a deep voice, "I am already planning to use the dry toilets with you in the countryside, shouldn’t you be happy about that?"

Qiao Rui came back to her senses, her eyes meeting his squarely, his dark and profound gaze shooting straight into hers, as if trying to probe into her heart.

"I’m very happy," Qiao Rui hurriedly said, "and very honored, too. Once things here are settled, I’ll take you, how about that?"

Pei Liyan watched her eyes, his expression clearly reluctant. Did he seem like he couldn’t see through it?

But he still looked at the girl with a smile, nodding earnestly. "After Brother Song’s engagement ceremony, we’ll go back to Qingcheng to make some arrangements and then head over."

His eyes were too deep and distant, serene to the point of utmost seriousness.

He said he would go, and his attitude made it clear there was no room for doubt.

Seeing the man’s serious eyes, Qiao Rui felt there was an undeniable determination within them.

"I want to see the place you live in, see how you became such a witty, clever, and resilient person!"

"Sure!" Qiao Rui suddenly smiled, revealing a very sweet smile.

Pei Liyan stared at her in surprise; the girl’s lips were still flush with a vibrant, enticing red.

Qiao Rui then said, "This is all thanks to the wisdom of hardworking people, you know. Just by hanging around with the village aunties, you can learn so many tricks."

As she spoke, she glanced at Pei Liyan and continued, "But the aunties in our village particularly like touching men with soft, tender skin like yours, so don’t get scared or disgusted if they touch you. They don’t mean any harm—they just like their ’tender tofu.’"

Pei Liyan watched her as she earnestly explained this, amused.

He nodded seriously. "Alright, I won’t be afraid. The aunties mean no harm, and you’ll protect me, right?"

"Aren’t you the man here? Shouldn’t you be protecting me?" Qiao Rui asked with a tone of exasperation.

"Then you cover for me," Pei Liyan said. "After all, the countryside is your turf."

Qiao Rui’s lips twitched. "Fine, I’ll cover for you."

Pei Liyan raised his eyebrows at her, a continuous smile in his eyes.

Qiao Rui felt a bit embarrassed under his gaze.

"I’m hungry!" she said. "When can we eat?"

Pei Liyan lifted his arm, revealing his wristwatch, glanced at it, and replied, "Wait a bit longer. Heming must have arranged everything by now."

"Are we eating with others?" Qiao Rui asked.

"Mm," Pei Liyan nodded. "Just think of today as the start of socializing."

"Oh!" She pursed her lips, looking at Pei Liyan’s handsome face and felt an indescribable turmoil inside.

This man was not only sharing a room with her but also going back to her hometown with her. It was obviously intentional.

She started to walk away.

Pei Liyan followed without a word, frowning slightly. "Don’t want to socialize?"

"Mm!" Qiao Rui grumpily threw out a word.

"Why?"

"You can’t eat as much as you want without restraint."

"During your last blind date, didn’t you enjoy nibbling on roast chicken in public? You even deliberately smeared chicken oil on my hand and didn’t seem unrestrained then."

Hearing this, Qiao Rui’s heart skipped a beat.

So he noticed last time.

She immediately tried to disassociate herself, "I didn’t mean to last time, and besides, back then I didn’t know anyone, and I was thinking that you wouldn’t choose me anyway. Who knew you wouldn’t play by the rules."

"Is that so?" Pei Liyan let out a soft laugh without exposing her, "You can still eat without restraint later."

"Better not, I don’t want to embarrass you," Qiao Rui said. "You said it yourself, husband and wife are one body, sharing honor and disgrace. I want us both to be honored!"

Pei Liyan’s gaze lingered, fixed on Qiao Rui’s bright and beautiful face.

His gaze was very profound as he said, "Very good!"

Qiao Rui’s face turned red again, "You compliment me one moment and disparage me the next; I don’t even know when you’re telling the truth!"

"I’m very tempted by you; that’s the truth," he told her in a husky voice.
