Chapter 196: Chapter 196: Ignoring is the Real Hurt

Song Muyu felt panicked inside, but her face remained calm, her tone indifferent as she said, "After the last time in Shengyang, my cycle changed, and it hasn’t been very regular!"

Her answer was watertight.

Song Xun half-squinted his eyes, scrutinizing her for a moment before he averted his gaze, "Take care!"

Song Muyu was startled.

He had already stood up.

Song Muyu paused briefly, "Did you come to see me for something?"

"I came to Qingcheng to take care of some matters and took the opportunity to see you," Song Xun said.

"Oh, I’m fine," Song Muyu quickly replied, "You don’t need to worry, brother!"

"It doesn’t matter if you don’t attend my engagement party," Song Xun spoke softly as he looked at her.

Song Muyu was taken aback and instinctively looked up at the man, meeting his eyes.

He was gazing at her with an unfathomable expression.

Song Muyu immediately replied, "Mom just called me, insisting that I must attend your engagement party, and I had already agreed last time to come."

Song Xun was surprised, "Mom called you again?"

"Yes, she calls every day recently," replied Song Muyu honestly.

Song Xun frowned deeply, "What does she talk about when she calls you?"

Song Muyu pursed her lips and hadn’t yet spoken.

Song Xun probably understood Song Muyu’s emotions.

He scoffed coldly, "Mom really has free time, talking to you about Shen Shuyi?"

Song Muyu was taken aback and looked up at Song Xun.

He also gave a wry smile, seemingly coming to a realization.

Song Muyu didn’t know what to say for a moment.

Her silence let Song Xun understand—that their mother’s phone calls, and the implications behind them, were still clear.

Telling her that Shen Shuyi was the rightful young mistress of the Song Family, her daughter-in-law.

"Yes, she talked about my sister-in-law; she’s a very nice person," Song Muyu finally spoke up, having adjusted her emotions.

Now, facing Song Xun, she was very calm.

"Brother and sister-in-law will be happy," Song Muyu spoke earnestly, "I will bless you, and I will attend your engagement ceremony and also your wedding."

Hearing her words, Song Xun’s pupils contracted several times, his tone losing its previous arrogance and indifference, filled only with calmness and sadness.

"Why bother?"

Song Muyu was startled.

"Why put yourself through such distress?" Song Xun spoke again.

Song Muyu looked up, bewildered, seeing him standing in front of her, tall and straight, his countenance cold yet calm.

Song Muyu subconsciously pursed her lips, at a loss for words.

His words pained her heart.

She lowered her gaze, staring at her own toes.

With one hand in his pocket, Song Xun’s eyebrows were sharply furrowed as he asked in a deep voice, "You clearly don’t want to go, so why insist on going? Song Muyu, talk to me."

After a long silence, Song Muyu spoke softly, "It’s not that I don’t want to go. I want to go and give my blessings to your engagement."

Song Xun knitted his brows, "Have you thought about—when Shen Shuyi finds out about the relationship between you and me, what will she think?"

In that instant, a sharp pain struck Song Muyu’s heart, and she felt as if her head was empty, the world spinning around her, nearly causing her to faint.

She tightly pressed her lips together, once again falling silent.

Song Xun’s voice seemed devoid of emotion, only exceptionally somber.

"Some things can’t be pretended away as if they never occurred."

Song Muyu’s eyes reddened as she lowered her head, tears suddenly gathering in her eyes and fogging her bright pupils.

Seeing her not speaking, Song Xun continued, "I know you want to pretend that nothing has happened, but things that have occurred, no one can pretend they never did."

Song Muyu clenched her lips tightly, stubbornly holding back her tears from falling.

Song Xun walked over.

His leather shoes came into view amidst her tear-filled eyes.

Song Muyu subconsciously stepped back, avoiding the man’s presence.

Seeing her like this, Song Xun stopped in his tracks and did not continue forward.

He looked at her bowed head, her emotions seeming very low, and thought about embracing her.

His hands wanted to touch her body, but he feared he wouldn’t be able to contain his overwhelming emotions.

Eventually, he found himself caught in a moral struggle and did nothing.

Seeing her like this, Song Xun lost all his anger and said weakly, "Alright, since you think you must go to the engagement party, then go."

To forbid her would make it difficult to explain to his mother.

Song Muyu forced back her tears, not allowing herself to cry, but her trembling shoulders betrayed her vulnerability, her humble self-respect, and her scant pride.

She quickly steadied her emotions and looked up at Song Xun.

Their eyes met.

He saw that her eyes were slightly red.

But she did not cry; she swallowed her tears after all.

He felt somewhat disappointed yet somewhat relieved.

A faint smile appeared on Song Muyu’s pale yet beautiful face, which was both a pretense and a show of pride.

She said, "In the future, I will try not to appear before you, but I won’t forget the necessary courtesies. The Song Family raised me for many years; I can’t be ignorant."

Song Xun looked at her for a while and said, "Fine, as you wish!"

Song Muyu hummed in response and said no more.

"I’m leaving!" Song Xun gave her a deep look, then turned and left.

Song Muyu did not follow him; she just watched his figure fade away until her tears could no longer be held back and tumbled down.

Her stomach ached, making her complexion even paler.

At that moment, her phone rang.

She glanced at it; it was a call from her mother.

She hesitated, then picked up the phone, desperately trying to hide her recent crying, and said in an almost normal voice, "Mom, is there something else?"

"Oh, I heard your brother went to Qingcheng. How is it, did you two meet?" Mrs. Song asked on the other end.

Song Muyu was stunned, suddenly sensing her mother’s implication.

This call was made deliberately.

She hesitated, then said, "Just now, with my friend, we met big brother, exchanged greetings, and I came back."

She wasn’t lying.

Song Xun had come here, and Qi Yun was present; she hadn’t seen him alone.

And it was indeed a brief meeting, intended to reassure her mother.

Hearing Song Muyu said this, Mrs. Song seemed much relieved and chuckled, "Muyu, I didn’t have anything else, I just asked casually."

"I understand what you mean, Mom," Song Muyu said with a double entendre.

Mrs. Song chuckled, "Is your brother doing alright?"

"He should be fine," Song Muyu responded. "After all, he’s getting married, and his wife-to-be is so wonderful; there’s no reason for him not to be doing well."

"Yes, your brother and Shuyi really get along well."

"Yes," Song Muyu replied. "Mom, you can rest easy now, you’ll be able to enjoy life soon."

"I’m worried about you now. When will you bring a son-in-law to show me?"

A sting shot through Song Muyu’s heart; her mother was anxious but still wanted her to find someone.

She suddenly felt that her mother’s indifference to her pain was the greatest hurt of all.

Why must a woman make it so hard for another woman?

She gave a forced smile and said, "I will, Mom. When the right opportunity comes, I’ll bring him for you to see!"
