Chapter 122: Chapter 122: Locked in the Secret Room

Pei Mansion.

Elder Pei arrived home at seven o’clock to find Elder Madam Pei already sitting at the dining table. Spotting him, her eyes and brows turned cold as she said, "You’ve gone out early to court anger, haven’t you?"

Elder Pei knew he couldn’t keep anything from his wife and replied indifferently, "If I were that easily angered, this whole family would have driven me to an early grave by now."

"What did that wretched girl say?" Elder Madam Pei didn’t touch her utensils but asked first.

"It wasn’t pleasant," Elder Pei shook his head. "I can’t even repeat those words to you."

"What could be so unspeakable? Spit it out."

Elder Pei had no choice but to reply, "She said her grandfather had done favors for me, and I should repay him by marrying him. Hence, she encouraged me to divorce you."

"Ha! She’s beyond disrespectful and utterly uncultured," Elder Madam Pei scoffed coldly. "Who does she think she is?"

"A calf doesn’t fear a tiger," said Elder Pei. "You, my dear, should not bother yourself with her insolence."

"Why shouldn’t I? Does she think I’m afraid of her?" Elder Madam Pei sneered coldly. "I have plenty of ways to deal with her."

"Liyan stepped out, giving you a chance in this one week," Elder Pei said with a faint smile.

Elder Madam Pei momentarily stunned, asked, "Are you saying his business trip was deliberate?"

"Liyan is just calmly observing. You fighting with Qiao Rui, he really won’t care," Elder Pei said, still with that faint smile.

"But just yesterday, he publicly rebuffed me," Elder Madam Pei sniffed disdainfully. "You may have forgotten, but I certainly haven’t."

"He’s given you a week for your revenge."

"I don’t need his ’opportunities,’" Elder Madam Pei sneered. "I’ll teach that wretched girl a lesson myself."

She naturally had her own plans.

*

Just as Qiao Rui had fallen asleep, she was awakened by Mrs. Feng’s noise.

"Madam, I’m sorry for waking you. The Elder Qiao from your family is here."

Qiao Rui glanced at the time, seven-thirty.

One elder came at six, the other at seven-thirty. In their old age, they seem to need less sleep, but she was tired.

Once again, she got out of bed, went downstairs, and appeared before Elder Qiao, who looked perplexed.

He saw the girl in front of him wearing a milky white dress with a clean face. The dress sported a V-neck design, a woven fabric with some dark-hued flowers—very elegant and simple. Despite being just a simple dress with hair cascading down, there was a change in her aura, a departure from the usual.

Elder Qiao watched her descend the stairs without greeting and frowned, saying, "What, you’ve come back from the Pei’s with new tricks?"

Sitting down, Qiao Rui stayed silent, listening until Elder Qiao finished ranting, and then she finally spoke, "Grandfather, did you come to vent anger on behalf of your cash cow?"

Upon hearing this, Elder Qiao’s face darkened, and he glanced at Mrs. Feng, saying, "I would like to speak privately with my granddaughter for a moment."

"Of course, Elder Qiao, I’ll head downstairs now," Mrs. Feng immediately replied.

With Mrs. Feng gone, Elder Qiao’s eyes blazed with fury as he looked at Qiao Rui and scolded sternly, "You’re about to disgrace the Qiao Family’s face completely!"

"May I ask, grandfather, where did you hear that I’ve lost face for the Qiao Family?" Qiao Rui asked coldly in return.

"Your eldest sister told me," Elder Qiao said in a heavy tone.

"Ha!" Qiao Rui immediately let out a cold laugh.

"What are you laughing about?" Elder Qiao couldn’t stand Qiao Rui’s derisive laugh and his voice turned colder, "Who do you think you are, acting so wildly in someone else’s home?"

"Since it was my eldest sister who told you, did she also mention how she showed up yesterday, looking every bit the homewrecker, completely inappropriate?" Qiao Rui didn’t want to waste words with her grandfather.

"The events of yesterday, I don’t need reminders from Grandfather, nor have I tarnished the Qiao Family’s reputation. On the other hand, if my sister continues to lack decorum as Pei Liyan’s secretary, she should wait to be dismissed!"

Elder Qiao was taken aback.

Qiao Rui continued, "By then, sent back home in disgrace won’t just be her, but the Qiao Family as well."

Elder Qiao, despite his fondness for Qiao Xiang, couldn’t help but feel struck by Qiao Rui’s words in his heart.

He wasn’t without his own informants; he had naturally heard about yesterday’s events and wouldn’t just listen to Qiao Xiang’s side of the story.

It appeared that Qiao Rui was indeed formidable. He tested her a bit and found that this girl didn’t hold back, managing to make Elder Madam Pei leave in a huff publicly—quite an impressive feat.

He reined in the anger he had shown earlier and softened his tone before saying, "Qiao Rui, Grandpa didn’t come today to blame you, only to remind you not to make too many enemies."

"Then I thank Grandpa for the reminder," Qiao Rui responded indifferently.

"Liyan has gone on a business trip," Elder Qiao continued, "Do you know the purpose of his overnight departure?"

Qiao Rui looked at the elder and replied, "Grandpa, please speak your mind."

"Watching the tigers fight from the mountain," Elder Qiao stated gravely, "He knew that as soon as he left, you would surely be dealt with by Elder Madam Pei, and he gave her that chance."

Qiao Rui thought back to his warning from last night.

Her eyes narrowed slightly as she considered the suddenness of his business trip, and after Elder Qiao brought it up, it did indeed seem rather peculiar.

A wave of coldness washed over her.

"He publicly defied his grandmother, and with no place to vent her anger, the old lady naturally needed a scapegoat—and this week, you’d better be careful," Elder Qiao said in a gentle voice, "No matter what, you are still my granddaughter, and I don’t want to see you bullied."

"Thank you, Grandpa. Please stay for breakfast," Qiao Rui changed the subject, not wanting to dwell on the matter any further, and asked Mrs. Feng to prepare breakfast.

Elder Qiao stayed for breakfast before taking his leave.

Qiao Rui returned to her room, took out a phone, dialed a number, and ordered sternly, "I want a detailed report of Pei Liyan’s movements and activities since 9 o’clock last night until now, compiled and sent to my email."

The response from the other end was very respectful, "Yes, Young Master!"

Half an hour later, the organized files were sent to her inbox. After reading them, Qiao Rui’s lips twisted slightly, and her eyes dropped, casting a shadow from her long lashes.

Noon.

Elder Madam Pei had arranged for someone to come for Qiao Rui.

"Young Mistress, Elder Madam Pei requests your presence."

The ones who came were two burly men, giving off the impression that if she didn’t go willingly, they would forcibly take her.

Qiao Rui looked at the two men calmly and said, "I won’t go."

"Don’t make things difficult for us, Young Mistress."

"What if I do? What then?" Qiao Rui’s tone grew much colder.

"Then we shall not stand on ceremony." The men said as they stepped forward, ready to take hold of Qiao Rui.

Mrs. Feng was startled and quickly said, "Young Mistress, don’t suffer for the sake of pride. Just apologize to the old lady, and this will all blow over."

"Apologize?" Qiao Rui looked at Mrs. Feng.

Mrs. Feng was genuinely anxious.

"Young Mistress, I know you feel wronged, but Elder Madam Pei is after all the matriarch of the Pei Family. It’s wise to bow before your elders to avoid further trouble," Mrs. Feng whispered.

Qiao Rui smiled and said, "Alright then, Mrs. Feng, I’ll listen to you this time, as a favor to you."

After she spoke, she looked to the two bodyguards and said, "Let’s go. I’ll accompany you to see your Elder Madam Pei."

The Pei Mansion.

The car entered directly through the back yard into an eastern side villa complex.

The car stopped, and the bodyguards said, "Please, Young Mistress!"

They led Qiao Rui into the villa, but as soon as they entered, the door was closed behind them.

Inside, four towering men stood to the sides, with Elder Madam Pei positioned at the center.

Without a word, she commanded in a heavy tone, "Take this girl and lock her in the secret chamber. Keep her there for a day and a night for starters."
