"It’s time to get off work. Are you going back?"

"I think I’m going to work overtime. You don’t have to wait for me. Get the driver to take you home first."

His tone was not very enthusiastic, and he seemed different from the usual Lu Moqing who loved to stick to her.

This Lu Moqing reminded her of the aloof, taciturn man she knew from before.

For some reason, Qiao Xu felt that something was off with Lu Moqing, but after giving it some thought, she couldn’t figure out if she had done anything to upset him. Thus, she didn’t think much of it.

Believing that he had too much work left on his hands, she nodded and said:

"Then I’ll go ahead."

"Okay."

Lu Moqing glanced at her and gave her a somewhat bleak smile. Then, he turned his gaze back to the documents in his hand.

Qiao Xu felt that something was peculiar about Lu Moqing, but she couldn’t put her finger on it.

After pondering and taking one last look at him, she finally withdrew her gaze and left his office.

As soon as she left, the movements of Lu Moqing’s hands stopped. His gaze, now somewhat dim, lingered on the entrance of the office, where Qiao Xu’s figure had long disappeared.

Raising a hand to pinch the bridge of his nose, he leaned against the chair and stared blankly at the ceiling.

He knew that he couldn’t blame Qiao Xu for anything. She had endured his cold treatment for three years, so he had no right to demand her unconditional trust in just a few days.

He wasn’t angry with her but with himself.

Each time he thought of her swallowing the contraceptive pills and how he didn’t even have the courage to stop her, he felt even more hatred towards himself for helplessly watching her kill a life that was about to come into being.

Returning home, Qiao Xu couldn’t get the image of Lu Moqing in his office before she left out of her mind. She felt an uncomfortable sensation, as if something was stuck in her heart.
