Chapter 696: Chapter 686: Submission of the Mist Qi

Despite the mantis’s tall and robust appearance, it actually possessed only Disaster Level strength, ranking low among the Misty Monsters.

At least with the other monsters, Wen Wen wouldn’t have discovered them so easily.

Occasional shadows flickered through the mist suggested that there were quite a few monsters as big as this mantis, but they were well hidden and did not let Wen Wen easily catch a glimpse of them.

The mantis’s head lying at Wen Wen’s feet gradually turned into a light mist and dispersed, and its huge body also rapidly vanished into the air.

Wen Wen reached out and captured a wisp of mist, sniffing it lightly and then came to a realization.

"The mist forming this mantis is the same as the surrounding mists, so killing the mantis just returns it to its mist form, If I do not completely disperse the mist here, it won’t be long before it condenses again," Wen Wen said.

"In other words, no matter how fast I kill them, the essence of the mist is not harmed."

"The inscription says that the mist will not become denser when visibility is at three meters, but that’s probably just the appearance. The excess mist likely all condenses into these types of monsters."

Wen Wen speculated that once there were enough monsters around, they would stop observing and start attacking.

However, playing a passive role in combat wasn’t Wen Wen’s style, so he raised his eyebrows and drew out the pistol, Blazing Tiger, with a wave of his hand.

He then closed his eyes and fired a shot into the sky.

The Blazing Tiger was powerful, and the sound was far louder than a normal gunshot, that sound acting like a signal, causing the surrounding monsters to become agitated.

Wen Wen also used the gunshot to roughly pinpoint the positions of the monsters around him, and several spears floated behind him, which he sequentially threw.

Bats can locate using ultrasonic waves, and although Wen Wen did not have the physiology of bats, his ears were far beyond the limits of ordinary humans. Merely pinpointing was still achievable.

At this stage, knowing the location roughly was sufficient. Wen Wen could directly see within three meters, and within a distance of ten meters, he could clearly discern the true from the false using the Heart Eye derived from his Sword Qi practice.

After Wen Wen made his move, the monsters finally stopped observing and launched attacks on him.

The monsters appeared bizarre and varied, but their abilities were unusually monotonous, all purely physical in nature. Even those that appeared to be highly poisonous didn’t possess a trace of toxin.

Their forms were merely elongated at random. The fundamental basis of their combat was their bodies made from condensed mist, which weren’t sturdy. Once they sustained damage exceeding their limit, they would dissolve back into mist.

Yet, their lethal capability should not be underestimated. Several monsters’ mere attack power had already reached the Middle Sequence level, comparable to the Burrow Beasts in the Nest of Destruction.

Moreover, although Wen Wen continually killed monsters from the mist, there were always more regenerating within the mist at an infuriatingly fast pace.

Now Wen Wen understood why Bai Du was reluctant to interfere with this matter.

Without a doubt, the Mist Box was also a Catastrophe Level Containment Item!

It was just uncertain how this item compared in strength with the Nest of Destruction.

If the scope were limited to a single city, then the monsters from the mist might be able to suppress a head from the Nest of Destruction due to their rapid regeneration advantage.

But if there were no restrictions on either side, the endless multiplication of the creatures in the Nest of Destruction, along with their targeted Evolution, could completely overwhelm the monsters of the mist with a sheer number advantage.

However, such comparisons were actually meaningless as the Mist Box had likely not exhibited its full strength yet.

Yet, just from the perspective of the level of threat, the Nest of Destruction was still more terrifying. If unchecked, the ceaseless stream of monsters could fill the Federation, whereas the calamity from the Mist Box was confined to just a single city.

The intensity of the battle kept escalating; even with Wen Wen’s strength surpassing the usual Upper Sequence, he was barely holding on with several new wounds on his body.

Initially, these monsters were only engaging in close combat, which Wen Wen could still withstand, but later, monsters capable of long-range attacks appeared in the mist.

Unable to clearly discern the position of his enemies, Wen Wen was repeatedly hit.

But the more Wen Wen fought, the more he felt something was amiss, "No... If these misty monsters can truly become endlessly stronger, even a True-order Master might struggle to cope; how did that small secret organization manage to seal the Mist Box initially?"

"It’s probably not that every mist is this powerful, but the intensity is so high where I am. If it keeps getting stronger, even reaching Catastrophe Level might be possible."

"Bai Du released the Mist Box to deal with me; he must have noticed its anomaly when the Mist Box was wreaking havoc and knew how troublesome this item could be."

The connection between the Mist Box and the Sanctuary was undeniable, given its sensitivity to the Sanctuary’s aura. Could it be harboring resentment against the Sanctuary?

However, Wen Wen couldn’t see how this thing could have the capability to confront the Sanctuary directly.

If it had its own consciousness and knew about the existence of the Sanctuary, it certainly would not target the Sanctuary so blatantly; that would be suicidal.

If this thing lacks its own consciousness but is extremely sensitive to the Sanctuary’s aura...

The more Wen Wen analyzed, the clearer his thoughts became; he had an idea he wanted to try, which might trigger an even more terrifying change in the Mist Box, but could also resolve the current crisis.

But if he did nothing, nothing would change; if it caused trouble, the worst-case scenario would be to seek refuge directly in the Sanctuary.

"Since just a hint of the Sanctuary’s aura immediately gathers the mist, what would happen if I reveal a much larger amount of it?"

Wen Wen’s eyes widened, and he immediately activated the Dark Matter; a black robe quickly enveloped him.

Black Chains emerged from behind him, hovering in mid-air, clawing and waving like an ever-expanding black spiderweb, while the aura of the Calamity Prison Supervisor, subtly of Catastrophe Level, wafted out.

Though Wen Wen looked intimidating in this guise, his strength had not changed at all; however, the aura emanating from him was genuinely that of a Calamity Prison Supervisor.

He wanted to see if this would cause a change in the mist.

After Wen Wen transformed, the previously turbulent mist instantly calmed, and the monsters preparing to attack also all stopped; countless gazes converged on Wen Wen.

Wherever Wen Wen’s gaze fell, the mist began to swirl, as if signaling submission!

The previously chaotic battlefield fell into an unexpected silence, exciting Wen Wen, "It really worked; they have indeed stopped. This means my idea wasn’t wrong!"

This was a possibility Wen Wen had considered while fighting these monsters.

Before Wen Wen launched his attacks, the monsters were simply gathering around him without showing any intention to attack.

Could it be possible that they didn’t view the Sanctuary with hostility, but were gathering around Wen Wen in hopes of receiving orders from him?

As for the battles that happened afterward, they might have merely been acts of self-defense!

Wen Wen licked his lips, feeling a surge of impulse within him, then uttered a single word...

"Disperse!"
