Chapter 472: Chapter 470 Da Shanren
On a road outside the dense jungle, a van lay on its side.
The van was covered in dents and traces of being trampled by wild beasts, the door was wide open, and there were clear claw marks at the location of the door lock.
From the bloodstains nearby, it was evident that the van had encountered something very bad.
After a long silence, the rear trunk of the vehicle was opened, and a young girl in sportswear with a ponytail climbed out, her heart still racing with fear.
Her name was Fu Xuerou, and she had been traveling with a few friends when this incident happened.
They were driving along this mountain road when suddenly, countless wild beasts surged out of the jungle.
An enormous gorilla casually flipped the van over, and then the powerful beasts devoured all the people inside, creating a scene too horrific to witness.
If she hadn’t reacted quickly and hidden in the trunk, holding her breath to avoid detection, she would now be beast excrement.
"Those were simply not animals... but monsters!"
Fu Xuerou, although well-educated, had never known of any gorilla that could flip a van singlehandedly!
"What should I do now? There is no sign of human habitation for dozens of kilometers around, and walking back alone might encounter those monsters again. My phone is also ruined by those beasts."
Fu Xuerou bit her lip, her thoughts in turmoil as she tried to figure out what to do. If all else failed, she would have to risk walking to the nearest city.
"Oh my, what happened here, did you suffer a disaster?"
A man holding a saw, dressed in a ranger’s uniform, appeared from the forest and said to Fu Xuerou in surprise.
The ranger’s skin was a bit dark, and he seemed quite greasy, even a little reflective.
Seeing another human, Fu Xuerou’s tears started flowing at once; she thought she was surely going to die.
After she told the ranger about her ordeal, instead of being surprised, he acted as if it were all too common.
"This is Qi Ling Mountain, there have been legends of demons here since ancient times. Legends often stem from reality, and indeed, mutated animals exist here, but they generally don’t attack humans. Maybe you did something to provoke them."
Unable to comprehend, Fu Xuerou asked, "How could that be? We were just driving normally."
The ranger thought for a moment and said, "Perhaps they don’t like cars... Anyway, they definitely wouldn’t attack humans without being provoked."
"Young lady, what do you plan to do next?"
After thinking, Fu Xuerou said, "Can you take me to a nearby town, or contact someone to pick me up...?"
The ranger shook his head, turned around to show Fu Xuerou the bloodstains on his back, and pulled out a smashed walkie-talkie.
"I got injured by accident earlier, and now I can’t get in touch with the outside. Someone is coming to take over my shift at eight in the morning. You can go back to town then."
"Not until eight o’clock tomorrow evening..."
Fu Xuerou’s face fell. She didn’t have the courage to stay here until eight tomorrow morning. How was she going to survive the long night?
The ranger said with a smile, "Not far from here, there is a ranger’s lodge where you can stay for the night. Mutated creatures don’t appear around there."
"Ranger’s lodge..."
Following a stranger to an unknown place to spend the night would certainly not be something Fu Xuerou would normally agree to.
But given the choice between spending the night in the wilderness at the risk of being eaten by monsters and following this ranger, she opted for the latter. At least the ranger had been all smiles, giving off a very approachable vibe.
"The paths through the forest can be tough to navigate, so please bear with me," the ranger said before leading Fu Xuerou into the woods.
Following behind him, Fu Xuerou asked, "By the way, I haven’t asked yet, what’s your name?"
"You don’t need to know my name, I’m a great good guy," the ranger said offhandedly.
Great good guy, why don’t you just say you’re Comrade Lei.
But at this moment, Fu Xuerou was too despondent to bother snarking at him.
As she followed behind the ranger, Fu Xuerou’s suspicion grew.
With the back of his shirt bloodied and torn, how could he move so briskly? She was struggling to keep up.
Driven by curiosity, she wanted to lift up his shirt to gauge the severity of his injury, but as soon as her hand touched the fabric, the ranger deftly sidestepped, avoiding her touch, and his expression turned a shade colder.
So Fu Xuerou no longer persisted in trying to see his back. After all, she was going to spend the night on his turf, and it was best to get along.
As they walked, they came upon a pond about ten meters in diameter. The water was a lucent green and so clear that the fish inside could be seen swimming about.
The ranger turned around, looked at Fu Xuerou, and said, "Okay, we’ve arrived."
"Arrived? There isn’t even a ranger’s hut here..." Fu Xuerou’s words stopped abruptly, and then her face turned to horror.
That the ranger had brought her to this place, it became clear that the story about a ranger’s hut had been a lie.
And was that the only lie he had told her?
The bloodstains on the back of his clothes, if they were really from an injury, he probably wouldn’t even be able to stand, right?
Yet this man was still striding along effortlessly...
Maybe this person wasn’t a ranger at all, but someone who had killed the ranger and stolen his clothes!
"I’m so stupid, why did I follow a man into the depths of the jungle without thinking, and now I can’t even find my way back," thought Fu Xuerou, filled with despair.
"Who exactly are you, and what is your purpose?"
"Who I am..." The man’s expression became sinister as he said in a strange tone, "Haven’t I told you? I’m Da Shanren!"
After saying that, his skin turned slick and greasy, taking on a yellow-brown hue, and the man transformed into a massive eel as thick as a water bucket.
Seeing this horrifying sight, Fu Xuerou couldn’t help but scream and turned to run.
But she had barely taken two steps when she was dragged into the pond by the slimy tail of the eel. Two bubbles emerged and popped at the surface of the water, which then returned to calm...
...
Almost half a month flashed by in the blink of an eye, and outside the window, everything was pale with the arrival of winter.
Just ten days earlier, an express package from the Hunters Association had arrived in Wen Wen’s hands.
Most of the items in the package were explosives and firearms capable of leveling the nearby blocks. If Wen Wen weren’t a Ranger, merely possessing these weapons would have led the Federal Government to take him down directly.
After receiving these items, Wen Wen stored them properly, then began studying the three Secret Manuals he had purchased.
