Chapter 376: 374 Chapter Goodbyes and Schemes
The newly renovated house was bustling with activity as the Wang Junyi family of three was busy in the kitchen.
They had purchased a large number of expensive ingredients and were showing off their full culinary skills— all to welcome a guest, a benefactor who had given their family a new lease on life.
That benefactor, of course, was Wen Wen.
He sat on the sofa with his legs crossed, watching TV and waiting for dinner to be ready.
Wen Wen had already decided on his next destination, a mountain city far away in Chongshu Province where there was a Museum of Curiosities. Wen Rui had once worked as a security guard in that museum for two months, and Wen Wen had decided to go there to assess the situation.
But before setting out, Wen Wen needed to wrap up matters in Lugang City.
The Wang Junyi family had just been released by the Hunter Association and hadn’t had their memories erased yet because Wen Wen had requested to personally check on the family before performing the memory erasure.
Actually, Wen Wen didn’t have any special purpose in mind. It was just that, during the investigation of Wen Rui, he had experienced a brief bout of sentimentality, so he wanted to see how the Wang Junyi family was doing. As it happened, they wanted to treat him, so Wen Wen stayed.
They say each family has its own signature home-cooked flavor, and Yu Hui’s dishes had a strange yet enticing aroma, which made Wen Wen quite expectant.
When all the dishes were on the table, Wen Wen’s expression became somewhat strange.
Among several dishes, one could clearly see a variety of insects. The strange aroma that Wen Wen had smelled earlier was probably released during the cooking of these unknown insects.
Wen Wen’s appetite vanished on its own, and with movements too quick for the three Wang family members to see, he disposed of the contents of his bowl under the table, while Three Cubs ate with relish.
"Hmm... don’t you find this meal a bit strange?" Wen Wen said after a moment of silence.
"Strange..." Wang Junyi fell silent for a while before he realized what was amiss.
Ever since Wang Zixuan had issues, their family’s dining table had always been like this, featuring edible insects because of Wang Zixuan’s preference for them.
Being used to it, the family of three didn’t think there was a problem, but Wen Wen, as an outsider, noticed something was wrong immediately.
Wen Wen sighed and pulled out a silver stick-like object, pressing a button— the resulting flash left the three in a dazed state.
"The words I am about to speak will replace your memories. You have never experienced any supernatural events. These past three years your son has been confined at home due to a rare mental illness, but that illness has now been cured."
"You have never met a person named Wen Wen. Mr. Wang never had a friend like Wen Rui. When I leave your home, you will recover."
As he reached the door, Wen Wen remembered something he had left out and suddenly said to them, "Oh, and you don’t like eating insects. You never have!"
Once Wen Wen left, the house that had seemed frozen in time came back to life, and various noises began to emerge.
"Oh my God, why are there so many insects in the food, I can’t stand it, I’m going to throw up!" This was the scream of Yu Hui.
Wang Zixuan complained, "Mom, did you make a bit too many mistakes with today’s cooking?"
"Why are there four sets of bowls and chopsticks on the table, I suspect that here..." As Wang Junyi looked at the tableware on the table, he began to analyze instinctively.
Wang Zixuan patted Wang Junyi on the shoulder and said, "Let it go, Dad, we’re at home, no need to play the Great Detective for now."...
Outside the door, Wen Wen listened to the racket of the family and smiled.
Although they had lost a part of their memory, this family was much happier than before.
After experiencing so many things, only forgetting could allow them to return to a normal life; the human heart is not so strong to live peacefully after knowing the truth, perhaps wiping their memory of it was the kinder thing to do.
But who would erase Wen Wen’s memory? He was starting to regret coming back to Lu Gang City.
...
Under the towering building adorned with the Ruixing Group logo, in a dark alley, two figures in black overcoats removed their masks and began to conspire.
"Ben Bo’er, I’ve found out that Ruixing Group is a rising enterprise in Southern Xiangnan Province, and the absolute controlling shareholder Feng Ruixing has quite the knack for making money, plus he has no ties to the Hunters Association..." a man in a black overcoat said in an awkward Federation tongue.
"Bapoer, do you mean to say, take this group as a target to raise funds?" another man in an overcoat asked in a similarly odd accent.
The first man, Ben Bo’er, nodded and said, "Exactly, Ruixing Group. We’ve only joined the organization not long ago, we must do something to catch the attention of the Corrupt Blood, so we can stand out!"
"Then when do we start? I can crush his head with my bare hands!" Bapoer said, rubbing his hands excitedly.
Ben Bo’er punched Bapoer in anger and said, "Idiot, we are supposed to threaten him so that he provides funds to our organization, not kill him and take his money!"
Bapoer didn’t mind the punch but retorted with a slight grievance, "We are the bad guys here, what’s the point in being so gentle."
"How much money can the two of us carry? If things get too big, we might draw the attention of the Hunters Association. Getting a rich person to continue providing funds to the organization is the real contribution, taking a pile of money back ourselves might even get us punished!"
"Think less about violence, this isn’t Oye Water City, this is human territory!" Ben Bo’er explained sternly to Bapoer.
Bapoer thought for a while but still didn’t understand, so he simply said naively to Ben Bo’er, "Alright, whatever you say, I’ll listen to you, since you’re smarter than me."
"Don’t do anything rash, I’ll plan the specifics, we need to show that we can kill him at any moment, I heard he has started his own security company..."
At the mouth of the alley, a street vendor curiously looked into it, but due to the darkness, he saw nothing.
It wasn’t strange he was curious; two men sneaking into an alley in the middle of the night would pique anyone’s interest.
Just as the vendor was about to look away, a car with its high beams on sped past, and for a moment the light shone on the two figures, revealing their faces.
Their heads, one green and the other deep blue, were both glistening fish heads!
The vendor shook his head in disbelief; he hadn’t expected that these two not only were perverts sneaking into alleys at night but also had a fetish for dressing up, making themselves look like salted fish...
Then he continued selling his fruit.
Bapoer glanced at Ben Bo’er and then whispered, "He saw us, but it seems he didn’t care."
Ben Bo’er thought for a moment and said, "The people on land have seen much and are broad-minded, they might not care about our appearance, but..."
Another beam of light shone in, casting a sinister shadow on Ben Bo’er’s face as he drew a finger across his neck and said, "We promised the Lord not to reveal ourselves, so... let’s silence him!"
