Chapter 282: Chapter 280: Shengjing City
Three Cubs drove into Shengjing City, looking somewhat wilted.
By now, several days had elapsed since Wen Wen returned from the Gray Mist Layer to the real world; they had driven from Qianhe City in Southern Xiangnan Province all the way to Shengjing City.
Oh, right, Three Cubs’ lack of energy wasn’t due to driving the whole time.
It was because they went out for hotpot the other night, and Wen Wen had ordered extra spicy. Three Cubs, tasting such sumptuous food for the first time, kept stuffing as much as it could into its mouth despite not being able to handle spicy food, so its stomach had been upset for the past few days.
Wen Wen opened the window, looking at the scenery outside. He had been to many cities for work, but it was his first time visiting Shengjing City.
Shengjing City is the largest city in the Capital District, with a population close to thirty million; it is the political, economic, and cultural center of the Capital.
There are many famous tourist attractions here, but Wen Wen didn’t go sightseeing. He has never liked traveling; fighting monsters brought him more joy.
Furthermore, according to regulations, all superpower users arriving in Shengjing City must register with the Association as soon as possible, so Wen Wen couldn’t afford to waste too much time outside.
He directed Three Cubs to drive straight to the headquarters of the Hunter Association, located at Kunning Mountain.
Yes, the entire mountain is the Association’s base.
"This place is much grander than other cities..."
Wen Wen marveled at the densely packed buildings on the mountain, especially the steel skyscraper at the heart of the complex, which he found particularly impressive.
Then he got out of the car and underwent the check to enter the Association.
The check was primarily to confirm Wen Wen’s identity, and as for his contraband and Three Cubs, they merely gave them a cursory glance before waving them through.
For superpower users, such checks were sufficient, not as severe as the inspections at public transportation stations for ordinary people, where even fruit knives would be confiscated.
After all, superpower users are inherently dangerous, so as long as someone isn’t carrying a bomb big enough to flatten the whole mountain, it’s all considered normal.
Stepping into the Association, Wen Wen immediately felt a sense of oppression; something in the air seemed to be suppressing superpower abilities, significantly limiting his power.
"It’s cooler than Heng An’s blood warmth, but much more powerful... Even I am greatly suppressed," he noted.
It only took Wen Wen a minute or two to adapt to the suppression, after which a Supporter led him through the process of registering for the Ranger examination. He then also handled the procedures for staying at the Association headquarters.
The whole process was very straightforward, merely involving a review of Wen Wen’s recommendation letter and then registration of his details, far less complicated than getting a bank card.
No one looked down on Wen Wen for his detective background, nor did anyone praise him for his exceptional talent; everything was as placid as water.
In fact, this was the norm. The above situations only tended to occur in fantasy works.
With the room key in hand, Wen Wen found his accommodation for the upcoming period.
It was less a dormitory and more a small, luxurious residential area, complete with a supermarket, restaurants, a gym, an armory...
Basically, most things a superpower user needed could be found here, unless someone fancied a ’Great Treasure Sword’.
All of these were specifically built to accommodate the visiting superpower users temporarily staying at the headquarters... Permanent resident superpower users were generally provided with housing.
Of all these facilities, Wen Wen paid special attention to the gym.
Many of the machines there seemed specially designed for superpower users, including dumbbells weighing close to a ton, supersonic treadmills, and dodgeball with a Gatling...
"I definitely have to come here for fun someday."
After quickly checking the place out, Wen Wen was ready to head back to the dormitory. His room was A7 building, 304.
When Wen Wen arrived at the base of building A7, he saw a young man lying on a chair with headphones on, his face occasionally breaking into a sleazy grin.
It was obvious he was listening to a live stream.
Yep, in the Federation, live streams are for listening...
Since filming technology was strictly limited, the live streaming industry in the Federation had taken a peculiar path.
Streamers could create their own channels and earn money by telling stories or chatting with the audience, which was considered a burgeoning industry in the Federation.
Seeing the man engrossed in entertainment, Wen Wen directly yanked off his headphones and said, "There’s only a little over ten days left until the assessment, and here you are, lounging around like a salted fish?"
"Tsk, you’re here too."
The man stood up; it was Chu Wei, who playfully slapped Wen Wen on the shoulder and said, "You should know, whether I train my abilities or not, I’m basically the same."
Wen Wen was somewhat speechless. He could hear the sound coming from the headphones, a young woman’s voice dripping with coquetry and cuteness, sweet to the ear.
However, Wen Wen never liked listening to such stuff. He’d rather listen to educational content or crosstalk—after all, who knew what the face behind those sweet voices looked like.
But considering how damn sweet the broadcaster’s voice was, Wen Wen curiously asked, "What’s the name of this streamer?"
Chu Wei said excitedly, "Biluochun Scroll, her voice is super cute, and I heard she’s only seventeen. If you listen to her live streams too, we’ll be brothers from another mother."
Wen Wen shook his head; Chu Wei was still a brainless fan.
So he declined, "No thanks, I arrived a bit late, so I need to focus on preparing for the assessment."
Having said that, Wen Wen headed upstairs. Chu Wei didn’t mind and continued lying on the chair, listening to that sweet voice.
After returning to his room, Wen Wen checked around to make sure there were no surveillance devices, then entered the Sanctuary.
There were a little over ten days left until the assessment began. Due to the special circumstances of Shengjing City, superpower users from outside the city were strictly forbidden from exercising their powers within the city limits.
Thus, although Wen Wen’s actions were not restricted during these days, he was unable to hunt in Shengjing City, so he had to figure out how to make use of this time.
What he wanted to do most was to recruit new Containment Officers.
It had been a while since they had contained any new monsters; Heng An was still in the Sanctuary undergoing combat training, and Feng Ruixing’s strength was nowhere near enough for hunting monsters.
Gong Baoding, with his formidable strength, had just become the captain of a city’s Demon Hunter squad and had no time for capturing, which meant Wen Wen was the only one currently fulfilling the duties of a Containment Officer in the Sanctuary.
So Wen Wen planned to recruit new Containment Officers. He clutched his Custodian Badge, and immediately countless bubbles started floating around him.
"Hmm, no wonder it’s a big city; even the pool of potential Containment Officers is larger than in the previous cities."
After rummaging through a bunch of bubbles, Wen Wen fixed his gaze on one and said, stroking his chin,
"This one... I should have picked him before; this time it’s your turn."
