Chapter 116: Chapter 116: Suspicious Case
Suddenly, Wen Wen’s mother noticed him and looked at Wen Wen with a daze, as if remembering something, and a tear fell from the corner of her eye.
Then, she slowly walked towards Wen Wen, seemingly wanting to touch his face.
Wen Wen sighed, knowing he couldn’t watch any longer.
If it were an ordinary person, they might take this opportunity to communicate with their loved one, thereby falling into the trap of these ghosts.
But Wen Wen wouldn’t, because he knew that in one of the hands his mother held behind her back was a rusted steel awl!
And this wasn’t his actual mother, but Grandma Zhao Yan from the bun shop, who had disguised herself as Wen Wen’s mother, intending to stab him to death with that awl!
"No wonder Yan Xiu was deceived, who doesn’t have someone they can’t bring themselves to strike against... but I don’t!"
If he continued to watch, events would develop in a direction Wen Wen didn’t want to see.
He didn’t want to see a ferocious mother, even a fake one!
Wen Wen activated the power of his chest badge, and all the illusions disappeared from his sight, leaving only Wen Wen sitting at the broken table and chair, surrounded by five spectating ghosts.
Among them was Grandmother Zhao Yan, still playing her role, attempting to get close to him.
She didn’t yet realize that Wen Wen had broken free from the Illusionary Realm.
Previously, those who came to perform exorcism either wouldn’t be tempted by the Illusion Technique, or they would die within it, or only break free from its control at a moment of life-or-death crisis.
Someone like Wen Wen, who had entered the Illusionary Realm but broke free from control before their designed story could unfold, was someone they had never encountered before.
Wen Wen walked dazedly toward the old woman and reached out for her face with his right hand.
Then, under the shocked gazes of the surrounding ghosts, he delivered an exceptionally loud slap, so loud it even echoed in the empty bun shop.
Old Lady Zhao Yan lay on the ground, looking up at Wen Wen in disbelief. How could he touch the physical form of a ghost?
"Hmm, it seems that your usual tricks don’t work on me, yet I can harm you, so if you want to survive, try some new tricks," Wen Wen said.
Wen Wen grabbed the old woman’s collar and yanked her up; she desperately tried to push his hand away with the strength of a ghost, to no avail.
"You really don’t know how to play. If it were me, I would have placed poisoned iron nails on the chair, so that once someone sat down, they would be poisoned to death without me even lifting a finger."
Zhou Xun floated forward a distance, her face ashen, and said to Wen Wen:
"Release my grandmother. Why are you trying to catch us? We just want to live peacefully, yet we suffer such injustice. I hate all of you, at that time..."
Oh, right, her face really was the color of iron blue, not just an exaggerated adjective. Standing there, she could scare a child into crying.
"Let’s just pause for a moment to save time for both parties. I’m well aware of your story, so there’s no need for a lengthy speech," Wen Wen interrupted.
"I just want to ask how you managed to capture that journalist and photographer, and how you deceived the police for a month," Wen Wen asked with suspicion.
This question had been on his mind since the last time at the Jiang Family villa.
He realized that in many cases where special wrongful ghosts were created, the perpetrators did not have the ability to actually commit the crimes.
Just like Jiang Yusheng’s traffic accident case; although he did the deed, he didn’t have the skill to carry out the case, nor could he have possibly escaped the police and detectives afterwards.
In the Federation, with its specialized detective industry and highly developed forensic technology, it is very difficult for an amateur to commit their first crime and escape flawlessly.
Based on this doubt, Wen Wen investigated many murder cases linked to ghosts and uncovered numerous strange details.
Ordinary little ghosts aside, within the Furong River area, the ghosts with certain unique qualities are all associated with homicides involving perpetrators displaying near-perfect criminal technique!
Fingerprints, footprints, methods of hiding corpses and murder weapons, eyewitnesses, and so on--every detail was concealed.
It’s as if these cases, with different murderers, were all orchestrated by one highly experienced criminal!
This includes the death of Qin Shuang!
He fell into a net-dating trap, was lured out to a hotel by a woman, then her boyfriend found them, and in the end, the young Qin Shuang was killed by the couple, dismembered, and hidden in a fridge!
It took a whole year for the case to be solved, not because the police found the murderers but because the couple turned themselves in!
There are numerous cases similar to Qin Shuang’s.
Among the more powerful ghosts remaining in Furong River City, at least half are linked to similar cases.
If Wen Wen weren’t a demon hunter who had switched careers from detective, he certainly wouldn’t have noticed the trickery involved.
So, he wanted to confront this family for clarity.
"You know all about our grievances, so why do you still come to capture us? What exactly did we do wrong? It’s all the fault of you detestable living people," Zhou Xun said to Wen Wen, full of resentment.
Wen Wen didn’t respond to Zhou Xun’s question but thought to himself, "Her aura is different from the other four ghosts... so maybe today I only need to capture her."
After a moment of contemplation, Wen Wen said to her, "I am the Hunter, you are ghosts; it’s only natural and right for me to capture you. There’s no need for so many questions."
Zhou Xun’s malevolence intensified, and she said in a low voice, "You stood by and did nothing, just like everyone else. That’s why our family ended up like this, you are all murderers!"
"Yes, yes, I’m a murderer. So can you tell me who avenged you?" Wen Wen asked, with a bit of a headache.
"I hate it, it’s all because of people like you..." Zhou Xun continued her ghostly wails, with the other ghosts echoing her.
Wen Wen sighed lightly, letting Zhou Xun get carried away with her tantrum, then looked at Old Lady Zhao Yan in his hand and asked, "I’ve been holding you for so long. If you have any tricks up your sleeve, use them now. I don’t mind."
The old lady also wailed mournfully at Wen Wen, much like Zhou Xun and her company.
"Then it’s clear to me now, you probably don’t have any other abilities," he deduced.
Wen Wen drew a dagger and plunged it into the old lady’s shoulder—it was a Rune Dagger!
As the dagger pierced Zhao Yan’s form, there were no flashy sound or light effects, but her ghostly body gradually started to dissolve, as if it were melting away.
As she was about to disappear completely without revealing any special powers, Wen Wen confirmed she was just an ordinary ghost.
He activated the Catastrophe Gloves, and a tremendous suction force emerged, shredding Zhao Yan and sucking her into the gloves.
"The Rune Dagger can inflict great damage on ghosts, but it’s still better not to use it on them; it wastes too much of the ghost’s energy."
Upon seeing Old Lady Zhao Yan absorbed by the Catastrophe Gloves, the remaining four ghosts shrieked, and their auras grew significantly stronger.
"You, you killed my grandmother, the five of us were all we had for each other..." Zhou Xun tried to rebuke Wen Wen, but he cut her off.
"I came here to hunt you, not to have a heart-to-heart. If you have special powers, use them. If not, just die. It’s that simple," Wen Wen said sternly.
A chill more foreboding and maniacal than any ghost could muster radiated from Wen Wen, and the four wailing ghosts unanimously stepped back. They were actually getting scared.
