Chapter 109: Testing the Suspect

Chapter 109: Chapter 109: Testing the Suspect

Wen Wen’s eyes narrowed slightly, now he had a suspect in mind!

With suspicion came the need for verification, and he didn’t head straight home. Instead, he first stopped by a supermarket to gather a few items.

Toilet cleaner, disinfectant, chili powder, and various other things...

After making his purchases, he took these items to the sanctuary and began crafting a little gadget.

Let’s skip the details of the crafting process, but by the time he finished, his eyes were somewhat red.

Once home, Wen Wen jumped out of his window, climbed to his neighbor’s window, and peered inside.

Living next door was Wu Wang, whom Wen Wen jokingly referred to as the Clubhouse Wire Man.

At that moment, Wu Wang was sitting in front of a huge TV, using both his hands in some activities not suitable for kids.

From outside the window, Wen Wen’s expression turned sinister, "With his antics, could he be that person... Never mind, I don’t care anymore, since the gadget is ready, I must try it out."

He quietly opened the window and forcefully threw the gadget he had made in front of Wu Wang, then immediately closed the window.

The gadget hit the floor and immediately emitted a mix of red and green smoke that filled the entire room in an instant.

Wu Wang, who was in the middle of his "exercise," was dumbstruck. The smoke was intensely pungent, and in just a moment, he felt his eyes, nose, and exposed lower body all burning.

Not only was it spicy, but he even felt dizzy now.

"The gas is poisonous!"

He rushed to the door, trying to escape his house, but he found the door wouldn’t open—it seemed to have been blocked from the outside!

Wu Wang was flabbergasted. His powers were not of the physical type, and under these circumstances, his superpower was utterly useless.

Jumping out from the upstairs window was akin to suicide.

He could only desperately bang on the door, enduring the inhuman pain.

"He’s panicking, panicking to the point that he can’t even remember to cover his mouth and nose with a wet towel. I think it’s not him, or maybe he would have noticed me watching him. Regardless, this test should come to a close now."

The gadget Wen Wen created required some chemical knowledge. Back when Wen Wen was a rookie detective, he studied many tricks to deal with enemies and it was only after becoming a superpower user that he stopped learning these dubious techniques.

After hesitating for a moment, Wen Wen climbed back home, went to the door of Wu Wang’s house, and kicked it open.

"Wow, your place... is really a mess."

Wen Wen covered his mouth and nose, reached out, and dragged Wu Wang, who was squatting by the door.

"Thank you so much. If it weren’t for you, I might have died in there," Wu Wang said with a sob, his tears falling not from emotion but from irritation.

Wen Wen consoled Wu Wang, "Being a Demon Hunter like us, it’s inevitable to face retaliation from others. Always be prepared to avoid falling into traps."

"Thank you, thank you."

Wu Wang, still bare-bottomed, continued to sincerely thank Wen Wen, completely unaware that the man in front of him was the mastermind behind it all.

"No need to thank me, as hunters, we should help each other," Wen Wen said righteously, as if adorned with a holy light.

"By the way, you weren’t affected by the toxic gas, so why are your eyes also red?" Wu Wang suddenly looked suspiciously at Wen Wen.

"Um... I was just chopping onions at home," Wen Wen said, appearing slightly guilty.

Wu Wang was unsuspecting, observing his still smoke-permeated house, his anger rising, he gritted his teeth and said:

"Damn it, who has a grudge against me to use such a means to harm me? When I find him, I definitely won’t let him go!"

Wen Wen somewhat awkwardly touched his nose and said to him, "Perhaps it’s not a grudge, maybe just a prank, considering you’ve been trapped inside for so long without any life-threatening danger. Clearly, it isn’t poisonous gas."

"Even if it’s a prank, I won’t let him off!"

"Do you have someone in mind as a suspect?"

Wu Wang said confidently, "Haha, who else could it be besides him? Previously, I helped you and Captain Lin capture a monster, and that monster had an accomplice!"

"Then it must be him; other than him, you don’t have any other enemies in Furong River City," Wen Wen encouraged Wu Wang, trying hard to extricate himself from involvement.

The more Wen Wen interacted with Wu Wang, the more awkward he felt, afraid that Wu Wang might discover something off, so he quickly ended the conversation.

"I’ve called someone from the Association. They will treat you. I have to go back now; I still have important matters to attend to."

After speaking, he retreated back to his own home, closed the door tightly, leaving a bewildered Wu Wang standing in the hallway, bare-bottomed.

Wu Wang paused for a moment, then felt something was amiss, "You called the Association... oh no, won’t a lot of people find out about my current state? Open the door, let me in!"

But Wen Wen didn’t open the door, wondering what to do if he found out he wasn’t cutting onions.

Leaning against the door, Wen Wen repeatedly pondered over all of Wu Wang’s behaviors from just before.

"Faced with such a minor issue and he handled it so clumsily, he couldn’t be the target..."

"That guy, although crazy, is very capable and wouldn’t fall for such petty tricks. But who is he? He definitely knows a fair bit about me, which is beyond doubt. I must have met him before..."

"Also, if Gallier is dead, another lead is gone. Who could have ordered Gallier to kill me...?"

After thinking for a long time, Wen Wen couldn’t figure it out. All the clues were cut off, and he could only wait for Gao Fang’s next appearance.

"Let’s finish dealing with the recruitment of Custodians first, life must go on. Dwelling on this matter alone, I can’t continue with other things."

Wen Wen entered the Sanctuary, first going to the cemetery on the first floor of the Sanctuary, to erase the last tombstone that bore his name.

This directly related to his identity, which couldn’t be left here for the new Custodians to see.

Then he connected the Disaster Containment Officer badge with the Catastrophe Gloves, and a cluster of illusory bubbles appeared around him. Now, he could recruit Custodians.

Without much hesitation, Wen Wen directly chose Uncle Gong.

The moment he made the choice, Wen Wen’s figure appeared in Uncle Gong’s sickroom.

There were other people in the sickroom, but none could see Wen Wen, as if he didn’t exist at all.

Wen Wen looked at his own body and found himself in a strange state, ethereal but not a ghost.

In his hands, he held a contract, and if Uncle Gong signed it, he would become a Disaster Containment Officer.

But Wen Wen chose not to continue and retreated.

Moments later, Wen Wen, dressed in the robes of a Catastrophe Prison Warden and exuding an intimidating black aura, reappeared.

The previous outfit might have made Uncle Gong recognize him, so he needed to change his appearance.

Before recruiting Custodians, Wen Wen had made plans; he wanted to maintain a mysterious image, be a behind-the-scenes boss-type character.

And this attire perfectly fits the characteristics of mystery and power.
