Chapter 103: Conclusion and Reason
Chapter 103: Chapter 103: Conclusion and Reason
Watching the human-headed dog that wouldn’t leave and still wagged its tail, Wen Wen propped open his eyes with his hands, then stuck out his tongue and made a face.
"I’ve already memorized your scent, and if you don’t run away quickly, once I change my mind, it will be too late for regrets," he said.
Wen Wen sat on the steps, trying to scare the human-headed dog with a fierce and menacing appearance, even though capturing it for the Sanctuary might gain him some useful abilities, he didn’t want to do that.
At least, not now.
But such tactics might work on humans, not so much on dogs; the human-headed dog looked at Wen Wen with its tail wagging, seemingly begging for something.
Occasionally, it would glance at the villa, looking at the remaining family of three with a gentle expression in its eyes.
The human-headed dog still remembered one stormy night, the cold wind howling, when it, yet to reveal its supernatural self, cowered under the mailbox at the villa’s entrance, trembling.
Back then, Jiang Wenyue brought it home and took great care of it.
Except for Jiang Yusheng, the family treated it well, raised it to full size, and thus, it genuinely cared for them.
It wasn’t until it moved into the villa and began to frequently use its power, its face becoming increasingly strange, that the family members’ attitude towards the human-headed dog turned sour— they even tried to kill it several times!
But sometimes, the affection of an animal is more sincere than that of a human; despite being treated unfairly, it still wanted to protect the family of Jiang Wenyue.
"Do you still not want to leave them? There will no longer be ghosts haunting them, so you don’t need to protect them anymore," Wen Wen said.
Once a dog had a human face, its emotions were easy to read, so Wen Wen easily guessed what the dog was thinking.
The human-headed dog let out a low whine, looking somewhat listless, and after a while, it extended its paw and pawed at Wen Wen’s leg.
"Do you want to come with me?" Wen Wen asked, raising an eyebrow.
The human-headed dog nodded.
"Following me won’t be as nice as you think; you will lose your freedom," Wen Wen said, squinting his eyes.
The human-headed dog nodded again.
"Since this is your choice, then I’ll agree to it," Wen Wen said.
Wen Wen reached out his right hand to the human-headed dog, and from the Catastrophe Gloves, a black chain spread out, enshrouding and dragging it into the Sanctuary.
The entire process went without any resistance from the human-headed dog; this was the first time Wen Wen encountered such a situation where a monster willingly let itself be contained in the Sanctuary.
This was a creature more amiable to humans than a dog, and at the same time, more humane than a human.
Wen Wen couldn’t fathom the thoughts of the monster, but he respected the human-headed dog’s wishes.
However, what surprised Wen Wen was that the dog wasn’t confined in a cell area but in the storage area, Warehouse No. ZHI-0001.
"So is it considered a Containment Item... and not a Monster?"
Wen Wen scratched his head, somewhat confused about the Sanctuary’s categorization standards, maybe, the human-headed dog could surprise him in the future.
After dealing with the human-headed dog, Wen Wen stepped into the villa and gestured to Jiao Xinlei, "Come out with me; you must have many questions for me, I’ll tell you what I choose to say."
"Shouldn’t you tell me as much as possible? How come you’re picking and choosing what to tell me..."
Jiao Xinlei came out from the villa and sat down beside Wen Wen on the steps in front of the villa, indeed having many questions she wanted to ask him.
"I want to know, what happened to me, even before you showed up, I knew Uncle Jiang would definitely die tonight, why is that..."
"I knew he was going to die even before I came back..."
Wen Wen stroked his chin, feeling that Jiao Xinlei’s ability might be interesting, "Can she predict the future, or can she see death? Those ghosts ignore her, so it’s probably the latter."
"I told you before that you have a sense of inspiration that’s unusual for ordinary people, but you are not a superpower user. You need the right stimulus to possibly awaken your Superpower. During the time I was gone, you must have received some stimulation, right?"
Jiao Xinlei nodded. The experience she had in that restroom almost scared her heart to a stop.
"Then you should thank me. If I hadn’t left, you wouldn’t have found the opportunity to awaken your Superpower." Wen Wen said with a chuckle.
Jiao Xinlei rolled her eyes. If not for her good luck, who knows what might have happened. Thank her? If it weren’t for him, such a situation would never have arisen.
"Ghosts, monsters, superpowered beings, do they all really exist?" Jiao Xinlei hesitated before continuing to ask.
"You know the answer to that yourself. After everything you experienced today, can you still say they don’t exist?" Wen Wen said calmly.
Yes, Jiao Xinlei already knew the answer, for she had seen it all with her own eyes.
But she still wanted Wen Wen to tell her that it was all fake, that she could return to her previous, peaceful life.
For her, being able to see death, the Superpower was not a blessing.
After adjusting her emotions, Jiao Xinlei continued to ask:
"Uncle Jiang’s case is from twenty-five years ago. Why have those ghosts come for revenge only now?"
"It’s because the connection was established just when they moved into this villa. Before that, those ghosts weren’t in the real world at all."
"Connection?" Jiao Xinlei asked, puzzled.
"Yes, I’ll explain it to you simply. Ghosts live in another world that has nothing to do with ours. That world is called the Inner World..."
After that, Wen Wen explained to her about the Inner and Outer Worlds, and the conditions for ghosts to come to the real world, summarizing in the end.
"After Jiang Yusheng bought the villa, he never actually lived here. Instead, he set up spirit tablets in the basement to pay respects to those deceased souls."
"Then, one month ago, to prevent his family, who moved into this villa, from discovering his past deeds, Jiang Yusheng burned all the spirit tablets!"
"Burned them?" Jiao Xinlei said in shock.
"Correct, burned them. After burning them, he established a connection with all those ghosts, and the ghosts followed this passage to the real world..."
Jiao Xinlei bowed her head, thinking this was a case of bringing doom upon oneself. Jiang Yusheng had really dug his own grave.
"So, all of this has nothing to do with that strange dog?"
"Exactly, not the slightest relationship. On the contrary, that dog has been protecting this family all along. I’m not sure what abilities it has, but clearly, it can make these ghosts lose their aggressiveness. It’s like a nemesis to these ghosts."
"And, where is that dog now?"
After Wen Wen put it that way, she suddenly developed a fondness for the dog. Even though it looked bizarre, she also wanted to keep it.
"It left. The Jiang family is no longer in danger, and there are no more ghosts here. What reason does it have to stay?" Wen Wen lied with eyes wide open.
Jiao Xinlei nodded. She believed what Wen Wen said; after all, the family hadn’t been very nice to the dog.
