Chapter 998: Chapter 532: Bring the Money and Chopsticks
"Xiao Fei, can’t you drink a bit slower? At this rate, I won’t be able to talk to you soon," Wang Jiuming, a face flushed crimson, told Yan Fei in the small courtyard next to his home by the Provincial City zoo.
While speaking, he sipped contentedly from his liquor bowl, "The thing is, your liquor, it doesn’t get you drunk. I’ve been drinking from the beginning to the end of the year, good and bad booze, and I must say, yours is the most satisfying."
Yan Fei, reclining lazily on a deck chair, put down the empty bowl in his hand, "Senior Brother Wang, your flattery at this point won’t conjure up any more liquor for you; there’s only that one jar left. You can take it with you later!"
Wang Jiuming chuckled with a knowing smile—his tolerance was not to be underestimated; he might drink a lot, but his mind stayed clear even as his face reddened: "It’s not that I’m particularly fixated on your booze; it’s just genuinely good. I’m running around every day, accumulating all these little ailments from drinking. Often having some of your Medicinal Wine really does wonders for my health. Speaking of which, how do you manage to live such a comfortable life! Look at this courtyard, this little vegetable garden..."
This was the day after Yan Fei had seen Xu Xiaoyan off to school. Once Xu Xiaoyan had gone to class, Yan Fei made his usual rounds to visit the two elderly professors, especially Professor Qi, who was often alone. The professor was rather happy when Yan Fei dropped by for meals.
The two professors were both immensely respected. Most people who visited them had an agenda and were extremely reverential. Only Yan Fei treated them like old friends without any ulterior motives, just casually stopping by.
The professors enjoyed this approach the most, strolling over for a visit, chatting lazily, and sharing a meal—it was genuinely enjoyable.
The explanation of why Wang Jiuming was there had its reasons. Yan Fei had plans to return home that day, and after visiting the two professors, he had called Senior Brother Liu, who farmed mushrooms, to inquire about the current market prospects of mushrooms. On a whim, he also gave Wang Jiuming a call—a gesture of politeness, even if he didn’t plan to visit in person.
Once Wang Jiuming received the call, he drove right over.
There was no particular reason other than having had too many social obligations before and after the New Year. As a leader, Wang’s every pore sweated alcohol, and he was so overwhelmed that he came seeking refuge at Yan Fei’s place.
Now, looking at Yan Fei’s little courtyard, he couldn’t contain his envy.
With a couple of dogs for protection, and a small vegetable garden. Red walls, green tiles, and a canopy of green trees—though it was located in a bustling area, it was a quiet, secluded space. Simply lying here in the sunshine was enough to make one feel so comfortable that they wanted to groan with pleasure.
That’s just how people are—always coveting what they don’t have.
For someone like Wang Jiuming, back home at Sancha River, this would be referred to as the ’ailments of the rich.’
Leading a life many envied yet frequently moaning about being busy, exhausted, overwhelmed with social engagements, and bothered by all sorts of things—it was as if he didn’t want to live that way.
If he didn’t really want that lifestyle, he should just lease twenty acres of land back in the countryside and farm it for a couple of years to see!
Of course, without being in that position, one wouldn’t understand the complexities involved. That was the case with Wang Jiuming; driving around in his car and sporting an Old School Mobile Phone, he held a stable job that provided both status and esteem, the envy of many. But now watching Yan Fei’s little vegetable garden, even he was filled with longing, his mouth moving ceaselessly.
If some folks complained about their busyness or exhaustion in front of others, it might well be an act or a humblebrag about their career success. However, when Wang Jiuming came to Yan Fei’s place, he genuinely meant it; he was so fed up that he rushed over as soon as he got Yan Fei’s call.
Yan Fei was entirely speechless. This guy claimed he was sick of drinking, but the moment he arrived, he was already asking for liquor. The two of them went through a pot of liquor, snacking on beef jerky and a basin of cold shredded radish, and actually enjoying it.
Since Yan Fei didn’t have to do or say much, he just let it be.
People seeking solitude are like that; being alone seems uncomfortable, but having someone there—it doesn’t matter if you talk or not, as long as they listen to you talk—albeit the listener may not be paying attention. Anyway, Wang Jiuming felt hugely relieved, finding time passing pleasantly in such company.
"How great it would be if you could live here all the time, then I could come over often. This place is just too damn comfortable!" Wang Jiuming couldn’t help but keep going on, even as he drank.
"You can wait for that; it won’t be long now. When I’m done with the college entrance exams next summer, I might just move here," Yan Fei smirked and continued drinking from his bowl.
Wang Jiuming laughed, "You’re pretty confident, sure that you’ll get into university, huh!"
Yan Fei didn’t answer, just grinned, picked up the liquor jar, and poured a bit more into his cup.
The liquor was kept in a jar, and pouring with a cup was inconvenient, so they resorted to bowls.
Wang Jiuming, who had made a fuss about drinking, hadn’t finished his second bowl yet, while Yan Fei had already emptied several bowls into his stomach.
Scared, Wang Jiuming was on edge. Aside from the initial toast with Yan Fei, he hadn’t dared to say "let’s drink up" since—Old Wang had seen Yan Fei with a bowl and thought himself a hard-drinking champ, careful not to fill his own bowl to the brim for fear Yan Fei would pass out and leave no one to converse with him.
But now, he was thankful he hadn’t gotten into a drinking contest with Yan Fei. His life would’ve been at stake. With someone like Yan Fei, no matter your drinking prowess or your ability to coax or dodge drinks, it was all in vain.
