Chapter 974: Chapter 525 How much does it cost to feed a tiger_2
The Daguan Knife was also unyielding, chopping over the body of the young man wielding the red-tasseled spear, the blade’s edge undoubtedly no more than four fingers from his body.
Such a performance had to be well-practiced. The two young men were brothers and exhibited such proficiency that the crowd continuously cheered in admiration.
In the end, Yan Fei’s grandfather also wanted to step up with the Daguan Knife, but was held back by Yan Fei’s mom, "How old are you to be showing off like this? Go stand aside and rest. If you wrench your back, it’ll be us who have to tend to you. You’re old now, stop being stubborn and giving us cause for worry. Did mom tell you to go up there? Did she allow you to go?"
A good scolding was all it took. Moments ago the old man was looking majestic, but in the blink of an eye, he was reduced to an awkward smile by his young daughter’s rebuke, not daring to raise his voice. A daughter knows her father best, and Yanfei’s mom was absolutely right; though the old man looked imposing outside, at home he had sworn not to perform and was only allowed out on that condition.
Even Yan Fei’s uncle did not fare any better. After a thorough telling-off by Yanfei’s mom, he took over the performance from his father, impressing everyone with his handling of the Daguan Knife.
When it was time for the group to move on, Yan Fei’s grandfather began smiling and pleading with Yanfei’s mom to let him continue with the group, but Yan Fei’s mom was much harder to fool than his grandmother, and no matter what the old man said, she firmly refused to let him join.
It was then that Old Wang seized the moment to start discussing business with Yan Fei, "Boss Yan, I mean Xiao Fei! You’ve been raising that tiger for so long, have you ever thought about sending them to a zoo?"
Without a second thought, Yan Fei replied, "Sure! If you want to send them to the zoo, send all the animals over, the three tigers, two black bears, and even the golden eagle and the sable. Just settle the bill, and you can take them wherever you want."
At the mention of money, Old Wang’s face immediately fell, "How much do you reckon it’ll be?"
"You haven’t seen those little guys for so long. Let me take you to see them first!" Instead of talking money, Yan Fei suggested a visit. "And your friend here too, come take a look together, so you won’t accuse me of spouting nonsense when I bring out the account book later."
Old Wang definitely wasn’t alone; a young man had been silent all this time, and Yan Fei had initially thought he was the driver, but something felt amiss. Since when did the Forestry Bureau provide such a standard, granting a government vehicle that looked at least 90% new and of not insignificant grade?
Honestly, even the county committee Secretary Jiao’s car probably didn’t have the presence of this one. Given that the car didn’t belong to the Forestry Bureau, and the youth didn’t seem to be a professional driver, his identity became something of a curiosity.
Yan Fei’s hunch was spot on. Hearing his suggestion, Old Wang glanced at the young man, then said to Yan Fei, "Looking is looking, just a quick look will do."
The sedan kicked up a trail of dust as it headed in the direction of the bamboo forest. This road was now mainly used by Yan Fei, who was never afraid to spend money. Before the snow had completely melted, he ordered several trucks of cinder sand to be brought in to re-pave the road.
This had been done several times now, and the road was nearly as good as any newly paved asphalt road.
As the car passed through the bamboo forest and came to a stop, the three men got out, and seeing Yan Fei, the tigers and black bears stood up, rendering Old Wang and the young man dumbfounded.
The closer the three men walked, the larger Old Wang and the young man’s eyes became. From afar, the young man was too frightened to move forward, "Boss Yan, I see you’ve just tied them up with chains, but..."
Yan Fei didn’t wait for him to finish, laughing, "Don’t worry, these little ones I’m raising are very obedient, just relax."
Only then did the young man cautiously follow behind Yan Fei, staying close behind him as if glued there, prompting Yan Fei to chuckle to himself.
In fact, it wasn’t just the young man; even Old Wang was putting on a brave face.
The young man was no stranger to wild animals, and Old Wang, as the head of the Forestry Bureau, was certainly not half-educated about wildlife. The better one understood, the more one knew how ferocious these wild animals could be. It was usually those who spent their days cocooned indoors who thought mankind was the most powerful creature on the planet, rashly climbing over fences at wildlife parks—a lesson that those who forgot to respect the wild were actually courting death.
Approaching closer, they saw the huge head of the tiger rise above their chests, the young man was already terrified, and then two black bears rose on hind legs and lunged towards them, pulling on their chains with a clanking sound. The young man let out a cry of "Mom!" and nearly turned to run.
It was too frightening!
Without a word from Yan Fei, neither knew what to say; after a while, Old Wang lamented, "How did they grow so big? They’re way too large. If we really took them back to the zoo, the tiger enclosures would have to be rebuilt, needing at least double the space."
Hearing Old Wang speak, the young man finally said, "Really huge, I’ve never seen such a big Northeast tiger before! How much does this fellow eat in a day?"
No sooner had he spoken than a shadow flashed before his eyes, and even though he was already wary, he jumped again at the surprise, "What’s that?"
The young man had been speaking in quite standard Mandarin, but that exclamation was in the authentic Wan City dialect.
