Chapter 970: Chapter 524: Fifteen Lion Dance

Boss Yan scared people again!

It was the peak of the Chinese New Year celebrations, and even a heavy snowfall couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm for visiting relatives.

The coming and going of the crowd had a consequence; no matter what happened, news would spread across dozens of miles in the shortest time, much faster than making individual phone calls.

The folks of Sancha River wouldn’t run out of gossip during the New Year visits now: our town’s Boss Yan had knocked down a tree as thick as a water tank—rumors started like this, with everyone exaggerating a bit more with each retelling. The tree got thicker and went from being knocked askew to being snapped clean off.

The thing is, people believed it since everyone knew Boss Yan was a Kung Fu expert. In ancient times, he would have been on the level of kings and legendary warriors. So, whatever he did, not a soul was surprised.

Instead, because Yan Fei did such things, he became the talk of the town, and his reputation rose again without effort.

This was normal. If a teenage boss acted prim and proper all the time, people would probably treat him like a freak to be avoided. But by often doing these "off-kilter" things, everyone felt that this was exactly how Boss Yan in their hearts should be.

After all, he was just a teenager. Occasionally doing something reckless was completely understandable to everyone. They felt this was a vibrant young person, not some ’saint’ completely disconnected from the rest of us and too holy to be approachable.

When Yan Fei got home, he was completely out of troubles. His parents knew he was strong, but didn’t realize that his strength kept growing with his age, and now it was downright terrifying. For two consecutive days, they dared not let him run around and started working on his thoughts at home.

The persimmon tree he had knocked down, well, it wasn’t afraid of being hit by people, let alone cars—once a four-wheeled tractor in the village went out of control, and even after jumping off and letting the tractor hit it, it only lost a few chips of bark and wood shavings.

Of course, that was hitting the root of the tree. He jumped and hit a bit higher up, taking a bit of a shortcut. Even so, it was frightening, and all the way home, when his aunt and her husband looked at him, there was a weirdness in their eyes.

But none of that mattered—it just showed that the elderly couple was inexperienced. Didn’t everyone in Sancha River talk about it without a hint of doubt? It showed it was all very normal!

The scary thing about habit is that from the beginning, from catching cattle thieves to lifting huge rocks to block doors and now to knocking askew a tree, everyone had come to see such events as normal for Boss Yan. It was surprising how few thought this was beyond human strength.

By the time the story spread to more distant places outside the township, the rumor had turned into a full-blown tall tale that couldn’t be taken seriously.

The achievements their son had made in just a few years were something the couple, Yan Wenhai and his wife, could never accomplish in their lifetime. Now, looking at their son, all that remained in their hearts was the phrase: "The will of a grown son cannot be dictated by his father."

They didn’t know what to say, as although their son’s actions were impulsive and reckless, they weren’t wrong. Given that, the only thing they could do was to care more about their son and spend more time with him. They hoped that the love of his parents could guide him in the future.

Actually, Yan Fei was quite fortunate. Although Lin Xiumei was a bit of a nag, it was mostly directed at Yan Wenhai. With her son doing so well, she couldn’t bear to criticize him. Fathers, on the other hand, had it tough; whenever he tried to point out a fault in his son, his wife would leap to their child’s defense, leaving him with no way to argue.

Yan Fei quite enjoyed this type of life. With his parents around, when others invited him to eat, he had the perfect excuse to decline—theirs—"My mom is making me a meal at home!"

Goodness begins with filial piety, after all; who could prevent someone from spending time with their parents, right?

This year, Boss Yan sat at home, and the gifts he received piled up into a small mountain. Although not many were valuable, the constant stream of visitors was a joyous sight. Moreover, most of them said they were just stopping by, so there was no need for any formal meals.

Other bosses had to visit some ’leaders’ during the holidays, but this guy had it easy. A phone call to wish a happy new year, and that was it—no need to step out of the house.

The Lantern Festival was approaching, and the atmosphere in Sancha River township was getting livelier. For people lacking in entertainment options, the fifteenth day of the New Year was definitely a highlight.

That day featured dragon and lion dances, dry boat rowing, martial arts, acrobatics, and opera performances. Those with unique skills would take this opportunity to showcase themselves and maybe earn some extra cash. Teams performing dragon and lion dances would receive some token when they stopped in front of shops or business enterprises—it could be money or gifts, all for good fortune.

Yan Fei started preparing red envelopes early in the morning, stuffing each with a hundred-yuan bill. He packed one after another until Yanfei’s Mom, who had been back at work for a few days, watched in amazement: "You silly boy, does money grow on trees for you? Handing out a hundred for a lion dance at the door? Others usually give ten, eight, or twenty at most. If you wanted to give more, fifty would be enough. How much are you going to give away like this?"

Xu Xiaoyan, watching him get scolded, couldn’t help but secretly laugh. Yan Fei gave her a glare and turned back to his mom with a smile, "How many could there be? At most a hundred families, right? I’m a millionaire now. For me to spend ten thousand is like you spending ten. It’s not a lot of money. Dad, next time you need money to buy cigarettes, just tell me, and I’ll give you eighty or a hundred thousand for spending cash, okay?"
