Carrying a Jurassic on me

Chapter 927: Chapter 506: Shall We Give It a Try?

"Yang Hui, your water!" A girl ran over and handed a cup of water to the boy who had been speaking and then looked at him with admiring eyes.

"Thanks, Beauty Liu!" Yang Hui managed a weak smile on his face as he took the cup and sipped the water. "Is it saline or sugar water?"

The girl’s face was momentarily perplexed: "Saline water!"

"Oh!" Yang Hui gasped for breath and chuckled self-deprecatingly. "I can’t taste anything in my mouth; I couldn’t tell the difference!"

While speaking, he turned to look at Yan Fei again, who was busy taking care of Xu Xiaoyan: "First place? Huh!"

"What are you saying?" The girl who had just handed him the water couldn’t help but ask.

Not only was the girl puzzled, but several other boys were also rather curious. They did not understand why Yang Hui, who had just finished first in the boys’ race, showed no joy from his victory; instead, he appeared quite odd.

At this moment, Yan Fei was carefully helping Xu Xiaoyan walk around. It’s best not to rest immediately after intense exercise; moving around a bit facilitates better recovery.

However, Xu Xiaoyan didn’t look like those exhausted students who couldn’t even distinguish between sugar and saline water. She was brimming with energy and boasting: "I’m pretty awesome, haha! Just like that, and I’m first!"

Yan Fei, still concerned she might be tired, said: "Stop talking, just move around a bit first. Want more water?"

There weren’t many of Xu Xiaoyan’s schoolmates at the finish line, after all, their school didn’t have a sports department. They probably hadn’t expected one of their own to come in first, and only a few lively boys were waiting there.

Now that someone from their school had taken first place, it was ironically a girl. A few of the boys wanted to congratulate the winner, but seeing the close interaction between Yan Fei and Xu Xiaoyan, they eventually just stayed at a distance, inwardly lamenting about "flowers stuck in cow dung" and refrained from approaching them.

On the other side, Yang Hui, the first-place finisher in the boys’ group, finally caught his breath and exhaled deeply before pointing at Yan Fei who was helping Xu Xiaoyan walk: "Does anyone know that guy?"

After receiving negative responses, he revealed the mystery: "That guy was just running with her, right from the start with the girl who finished first. He was singing songs for her along the way, even carrying that backpack, and he arrived looking as if nothing had happened."

The boys and girls were confused and questioned why he was talking about someone else so casually: "So what if he was running with her?"

The girl who had brought Yang Hui the water was quick to respond, giving him a glare: "You’re so clueless! Yang Hui is saying that if that guy had competed, he might’ve also gotten a good place."

"Not might, but definitely," Yang Hui said with certainty. "He carried a backpack and wasn’t far behind me, and both of them were running with ease. The whole way he was talking, and here I am, exhausted, while he looked as if nothing had happened. If he had competed, he definitely would have run better than me."

"No way, right?" A guy standing beside them expressed some disbelief, making a gesture. "You are our guy, trained day in and day out. I can’t believe some random companion runner could outdo you!"

Yang Hui laughed a little: "Don’t comfort me, I’m well aware of my situation. This first place is like picking a general out of a bunch of lame men, it’s nothing to boast about."

As this was said rather loudly, other competitors who had just finished and were exhausted shot angry glares at him. His words were a blow to many people; in his speech, all the other college students participating in the cross-country event across the province were reduced to lame men. If it weren’t for the presence of their teachers nearby, some might have had the impulse to challenge him to a one-on-one confrontation.

After speaking out, Yang Hui also realized his mistake and hurriedly smiled apologetically to those around him: "I was talking nonsense, just talking nonsense, don’t be offended. Mainly, winning first place has left me ragged, and I got a little hot-headed!"

Since they were all college students, tempers cooled as quickly as they flared. Hearing his apology, most retracted their angry gazes. However, one of the athletes he had just branded ’lame’ was skeptical: "Just accompanying a girl can’t be that easy, especially after a ten-thousand-meter race. Are you telling the truth?"

"I’ve taken first place; why would I make life difficult for myself?" Yang Hui retorted. "We, the guys, started just five minutes after the girls, and that girl didn’t arrive much later than me. If you time it, the guys who are arriving now don’t have results as good as his!"

The girl with the surname Liu, who had given Yang Hui water earlier, added fuel to the fire, evidently loving chaos: "Their results aren’t even as good as that girl’s! Hee hee..."

Her words were even more demoralizing. Several guys arriving later did the math and indeed, as long as they finished more than five minutes after the girl who came in first, it meant that despite being men, their results were inferior to a girl’s.

It didn’t matter if they didn’t place; participation was what counted, right?

But being outperformed by a girl was a blow to their pride, which was difficult for the group with surging hormones to accept.

Fortunately, they must have found ways to console themselves. When a few more guys arrived, they immediately went to help them, while casually commentating: "Alas, our results aren’t even as good as that girl’s from over there..."

After wandering around a bit, Yang Hui was approached by a middle-aged man who was busy but finally had a moment to spare. He came over with a smile and patted him on the shoulder: "How does it feel? Not too bad, right? You didn’t embarrass your teacher, and you took first place without breaking a sweat. With this result, you’d be considered good even in the Provincial Track and Field Team."
