Chapter 917 - 502

Chapter 917: 502

"Uncle Zheng, this is cattle feed. The feed is a mix of dry and green fodder, with the addition of some distiller’s grains and oil residue. But now, with the number of cattle so high, that bit of oil residue is practically negligible. Take a look, all of this is normal cattle feed, we haven’t used any of those dedicated factory-produced feeds," Yan Fei said, stirring the feed in the cattle trough with a stick to show the people behind him.

Besides Old Pan from the military’s armed department, there were three military personnel dressed in uniforms: one middle-aged and two younger men.

The middle-aged man, referred to by Yan Fei as Uncle Zheng, was named Nie Haizheng. He belonged to a military unit stationed near Wancheng City. His specific duties were unclear, but he was part of the military logistics and had come to inspect the cattle farm.

The visit was regarding a previous suggestion to supply beef to the military—a decision not simply made with a few words. Military procurement procedures are generally quite strict, and once a supplier is chosen, they can’t be easily replaced.

Some time ago, information had been sought on the matter, and it seemed like there was no hope. Everyone had long given up on the idea, so it came as a surprise when news came that someone wanted to inspect the cattle farm—with Old Pan describing it as ’an unexpected pleasure’.

If it’s an unexpected pleasure, then it’s a lucky break. If not, it’s no big loss.

But it was still necessary to discuss the situation; after all, we conduct our business openly and squarely. Our products are no worse than others’, and our prices are not higher. Why pass up the opportunity?

At that moment, hearing what Yan Fei had to say, Uncle Zheng, with a smile, asked, "Boss Yan... may I call you Xiao Fei? Xiao Fei, we inquired before we came here, and you’ve made a bit of a name for yourself in our city. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have come. The feed you’ve shown me here is fine. But let’s get one thing straight, what you show me must represent the usual state of your cattle farm."

Yan Fei chuckled, "You can rest assured! If you don’t believe me, you can inspect our beef supply anytime. The beef I sell now is the same as the beef supplied to other places. You must know that the food safety inspections in Hong Kong are definitely stricter than here. I can’t guarantee much else, but my beef can withstand scrutiny anywhere; I can assure you of that."

Seeing Nie Haizheng still pondering, Yan Fei did not say more.

In fact, the military wouldn’t purchase much, as beef is somewhat expensive. Even though Yan Fei’s beef is cheaper, it’s still much more expensive than pork. The unit was only about a thousand men and didn’t primarily consume beef, so the purchase volume certainly wouldn’t be large—if it was, Yan Fei would have to reconsider since he didn’t have that much beef to begin with!

That little beef supplied several nearby restaurants, and he was also making beef jerky. If it weren’t for the plentiful cattle at Dino World, he would rather not have the distinction of supplying beef to the military.

Since Nie Haizheng didn’t ask to see anything else, Yan Fei didn’t press, but it was a given that he would take care of the meal.

After the meal, Nie Haizheng even took out fifty yuan, saying, "This is the meal money for the three of us. You must take it and give me a receipt. Our regulations are strict: we don’t take a single needle or thread from the people. When we eat, we have to pay. Xiao Fei, don’t think it’s too little."

Getting to know Nie Haizheng a bit over the meal, Yan Fei learned that he appeared amicable but was meticulous in his military discipline, the type to be strict inside despite a soft exterior. Since he mentioned it was a regulation, it certainly wouldn’t be false.

Without being too polite, Yan Fei took the money with a smile, had someone record it and write a receipt, and said with a bit of pride, "This money wouldn’t be enough in an outside restaurant, but everything here is homegrown, so we definitely made a profit. Next time you or any of your people come by, Uncle Zheng, make sure they eat here. Meeting more friends and making money is a rare opportunity."

Nie Haizheng laughed heartily.

Indeed, Yan Fei’s straightforward manner suited Nie’s tastes—no pretenses or empty politeness, just direct and decisive, which was quite refreshing.

This was only the first inspection, to simply observe the cattle farm’s conditions. More steps would follow, including evaluating Boss Yan himself. But Old Pan had already briefed him. As long as there was no major wrongdoing or violations of laws and discipline, there shouldn’t be any issues.

Of course, the decision wouldn’t solely focus on just his farm; they would consider several suppliers together.

Nie Haizheng didn’t hide it, "From what I’ve seen so far, Xiao Fei’s cattle farm has the greatest advantage. Your scale is considerable in our area, and the prices are low. Now, the price you told me is cheaper than our previous beef purchases—there are no issues with that, right?"

Hearing this question only made Yan Fei laugh more, "Uncle Zheng, rest easy. If you don’t leave today, come back tomorrow and have another look. We deliver every three days, and you just missed it today."

"The beef we supply to restaurants and butchers around here is all at the same price. The price is a bit low, but I profit based on the quantity sold. To make money, we rely on premium beef. We supply Provincial City and Hong Kong with marbled beef, priced at several times that of regular beef—higher than you can imagine. The rest, including that small beef jerky factory, they’re just side businesses."
